1) The maps are pretty balanced 2) The maps are imbalanced, but generally all towards the same race. Both of these work to avoid mirrors. If they're balanced, different teams will put different raced specialists on each maps (so about 1/3 of each race would be specialists on each map, and you'd get mirrors 1/3rd the time). If they're imbalanced towards the same race (arguably multiple ones towards P this season), it balances out since you can't field the strong race on every map, and due to randomness the Ps will only line up 1/3 the time (slightly more cause more teams will field 2 Ps). On the other hand if they are imbalanced so that there's a 60% terran map and a 60% zerg map, etc, there will be even more mirrors than without the rule. Every team has to put out each race, so they wouldn't risk their weaker race on anything but the map that favors them, so you'll get 2-3 mirrors in each match. Without the rule, but with maps imbalanced like this, the 2nd and 3rd best of a team's strong race will likely be good enough to overcome the imbalance. For example, they might play their second best P on a 60% Zerg map, just because they don't have a good zerg and don't HAVE to put one out. Because each team is weak in different races, it then balances out quite nicely for avoiding mirrors. At least that's my theory, if I worded it so anyone could understand. | ||
