Kal is such an aggressive and imperfect little creature. The kid's got flair and style, much like bisu minus the intuition. I would hate to have him lose to stork Jr, very few protoss can play the way he can.
His pvp is completely fucked up beyond reasonable analysis, which makes it all the more entertaining. Mechanically, he's on par with Jangbi maybe a little worse macro, but he's got the multitasking to match for it, much in the same way he managed to beat him 2 seasons ago with brutal harass and timing attacks.

Kal is a guy who does it for me. I was impressived by his play the first couple times I saw him and knew that he would make it big. I remember back in one of the MSL bracket contest, I literally fucked up every match up except for the final in which I predicted Jaedong vs. Kal. Well, it happened and he lost. I think Kal is feeling it again, and this time, he might take the title (most likely from Bisu). Kal fighting!

Seriously though, I don't like how Kal can be so unpredictable with his matches at times in terms of either playing brilliantly or messing up with a massive mistake. I hope Jangbi wins but after his series vs Kal 2 MSLs ago, he seems to be jinxed in that matchup even though he plays it well enough.

Or maybe he thinks JangBi and Kal's styles are significantly different and one map could help Kal more because he's better with reavers or something and another could favor storm drops or cannon rushes and maybe JangBi is better at those or something. I don't really know what they're styles are like that well and if maps will matter I'm just dreaming up reasons for what he said.

The last time these two met JangBi was a one match-up wonder who had only beaten two other Protoss players: BackHo and GuemChi. Kal was on the rise with two great match-ups and an improving PvP repertoire.
Since then, JangBi however has grown into veritable powerhouse, with a 65+% win rate in each match-up since the MSL semi-final. Kal? He's stagnated, barely managing to win half his games.
Kal's ELO peak came right after his last games vs. JangBi - GOM Season 4 was his peak. JangBi's peak? Right now. Kal is the "creative" player that is liked despite unimpressive results. JangBi is the mechanically strong player, with nothing that stands out about him, he's just good all around.
Everything about it screams a JangBi walkover in my opinion.

basically this series will be kal throwing goofy ass builds at jangbi with heavy harass.
if jangbi holds it off he will crush kal. Kal can't keep up with jangbi's macro or big army control.
also lets hope kal doesnt get any "brilliant" ideas like a 14 nex again lol.
I actually like both these guys but they will get romped by Bisu/free anyway. (GO FREE)

I can't say I'm overly excited about this semifinal, but as a player, Kal excites me a whole lot more than Jangbi does - therefor my vote has to go to him.

the games are too tough to predict.. both players are amazingly good, will come down to luck and how each player is feeling on the particular day. I also felt that kal vs stork was 50-50, although in normal circumstances I think it'd be more like 45-55, if stork had more time to practice for it.

Jangbi has supposedly been known as the best player in practice in Samsung (more than Stork and FBH) for a long time and is highly respected in the progaming community but has a problem with nerves on tv etc... I think he has slowly gotten over this over the last 6 months etc.. I don't know that for sure though. But what I am almost certain of is that JangBi is the better player. I hope he wins this.

Agreed. It seemed like as more time went on, Jangbi got control of his nerves, and managed to get into his practice groove for each match up. He came over some psychological hurdle and "suddenly" his pvt was great. Now "suddenly" his pvz is great. Hes 7-0 in MSL and tearing up things left and right. This is not a coincidence. Jangbi did not turn around his pvt, his pvz, or his pvp, he just, over time, felt more natural in these match ups. And now Jangbi's true capabilities can be shown. So despite past history between these two players, despite past official games of Jangbi's pvp- expect the unexpected. The real Jangbi could show up, and we will see some of the best pvp in a long time, or he could choke and play like an amateur.

Jangbi right now has done about the same as Jangbi in GOM 4, where he met Kal in the exact same fashion. Jangbi was not considered 'great' then for advancing to the MSL semis by beating Upmagic 3-0 in a series, and in the same fashion he should not be considered even good for beating Yarnc's zvp 3-0 (which is worse than Upmagics TvP was back then. really really bad). His PvT was later proven to be great over the course of proleague and his incredible game against Flash, and we may see his PvZ to be proven great when...he actually plays a good zerg!
The last time he played a good zerg was...07-06-04, when he played Jaedong (and lost of course). Jangbi is 13-1 in his last PvZs, which is a very stellar stat, but it fails to take into account that he's played Yarnc SEVEN times, and his 'highest' quality opponent in that list is either Shark or Magma lol. I'm not saying it's bad at all, because he's doing exactly what bonjwa Bisu would do, raping a bunch of nobodies, but until he plays that good Zerg it's a shot in the dark how good he actually is.
If you go through his overall stats he has played these notable opponents since June...win over Midas (not sure when Midas started sucking, but Jangbi's PvT has been quite good for awhile now.), a loss to Best, two losses to Mind, a win over a slumping Flash, another loss to Best, two losses and a win to BACKHO, a win over Iris, a win over Free, a loss to Sea, a loss to Best, and a win over slumping Stork. That's not particularly impressive.
This is the second time Jangbi has lucked his way to the semis with a creampuff bracket, and I hope it's the last. Seriously, this guy is robbing us of a Bisu vs Free finals or a Jaedong vs Flash the last time (when both were at their best) by lucking out with these absurd brackets. Now maybe if he lands in that hard bracket he could prove that he deserves a top 4 placing, but the only conclusion we can draw before this semi is that he's very lucky and hasn't gotten a chance to prove himself yet. Screw MSL for removing double elim.
Jangbi last time versus Kal showed great mechanical play, which is what nerves would normally affect, but also a complete lack of strategical planning, which is necessary for series wins, while Kal showed some smart play overall to take it home 3-2 (that's also how he won versus Stork). That is not affected by nerve, sorry. If Jangbi wants to win, he's going to have to come with brains or strategies from Stork this time; the other chance is to pray that Mr.inconsistent Kal has a bad day this time.
Basically the outcome is in Kal's hands. Who will come? Good Kal or bad Kal? That's too hard to predict -_-

heh i'm looking at it from the complete opposite perspective. JangBi is the better player with more potential - either he'll find himself in his first big series since the last MSL semi-final, or he'll choke. JangBi is the one Korean's liken to being god-like, while they call Kal the joker. It just seems like there is a complete disparity in the way Koreans are looking at this player and the way most people here are assessing his skill is unbelievable.
I don't think Koreans would call this kid "Huhneunim" or whatever if he's just "lucking" his way to the semis. I just don't buy it.

People need to be reminded how awesome JangBi is by rewatching all his games vs  Flash (forcing flash into a draw during a time when Flash was imba), and how he stormed NaDa so badly.. for a moment NaDa thought he was playing Zeus.

god I cant stand buffoons who think that a 60% win ratio in two match ups, and two semi final appearances is in any way shape or form 'luck'. Yeah, he hasn't gone against greats in his pvz, so we can't say hes one of the great in the match up, we can look at his play and know it is very very good, and treat it as such, just like anyone else with a ridiculous record like that. Hell, how is strategical planning not effected by nerves? Everything is effected by nerves. Fucking Bisu built two of the same building because he was nervous. You may prepare a good build order, have good micro tricks in mind, you may evaluate your opponent properly, it doesn't matter if you get nervous and it completely fails you.

Jangbi did this to Chalrenge in the PL finals. Chalrenge did this to Bisu in the PL semis. 4-gate timing attack is not that out of the ordinary.

Mechanics is everything lumped together that everyone should know how to do individually- Multitasking, micro, macro (those are the big 3)
Micro is obviously making every unit fight at it's best, by making up for holes in the sc AI
Macro is making sure you have the proper number of factories, raxes, w/e to use up all of your minerals as they come in, so that you can have the maximum number of units (as T and P, Z is different)
Multitasking is doing both at the same time. So if you can both micro and macro well, then you have good multitasking ability.

yeah, i mean.. if you drop someone and at the same time attack his front, while you defend vs drops at 2 locations at the same time.. you got pretty good multitasking.
Thats why, if you are a great multitasker, you should harass your opponent at different locations to make his macro suffer due to his lesser multitakingability.

Same here, but I liquibetted Kal. I do believe that Kal has a better chance of creating an entertaining finals, due to Jangbi's nerves. I think either of them would get rolled by free or Bisu, but Kal might make it more entertaining. I suppose we'll find out. =)

pylon gate, gas, both mirrored, jangbi's scout is out first, but in the wrong direction. Kal's also scouting in the wrong direction, so no big deal.

aww, i was waiting for the goons to kill eachother at the same time so that we can continue this mirror.
Jangbi is mining out the minerals in front of his neutral temple backdoor entrance, and started his robo as well as a second gate. Kal hasn't placed a second gate down, it looks like he might go for the expand instead?

kal is really far ahead now- about 12 goons for kal vs 0 for jangbi. Jangbi is trying to snipe probes to keep it even- he gets like 3? enough to make the 2 goons probably pay off for themselves.

Well, Kal certainly threw that game away. He beat Jangbi and then had like 30 goons left over. He could have just ran into his natural and annihilated him, but he waited and ran his units halfway across the map (to try to deal with the shuttle harass?), and then came back, but then there was a reaver with a shuttle and two high templars... he still might have been able to just run into that and bust it anyways.
Then he didn't build reavers... you'd think the amount of slow zealots he caught earlier might have tipped him off to the fact that Jangbi was going to get a lot of zealots... but I guess not.

Great harass by Jangbi to come back. Kal made a textbook flank on Jangbi during the first attack, but he should have had enough sense to follow through and counter when he had significantly superior numbers.

Putting the reaver in front ensures that it's scarabs won't get blocked I guess. It's in way more danger as a result though.

Kal trying to press home the advantage, and drive jangbi into a contain, which succeeds.

jangbi carelessly loses his shuttle, somehow it looks like jangbi has many less units than kal. Kal has taken his third in the upper right hand corner of the map, jangbi hasn't bothered to save his third. Kal is trying to take his fourth on the right hand side of the map at 2

9 gate now for kal, with 3 bases (fourth just went up), both armies are going to clash again in the middle, wih jangbi being out of position. Somehow using his spread force...he tries to fight, kal pushes back jangbi's army.

Jangbi was up a base and had stormed like twenty of Kal's probes. But for some reason he tries to cross the center bridges before his extra gateways kick in and just gets rolled because his units are way out of position. Kal pressed his advantage, killed Jangbi's third while taking his two northeast bases, and contained Jangbi to death. GG.

it didn't work long enough to actually do anything. The best case would have been if jangbi would have held the ramp long enough so that kal actually sent a unit in the wrong direction, allowing jangbi to counter. Didn't happen, so it ended up not mattering.

I guess this settles all debates about whether or not Kal won against Stork fair and square. If you lose to Jangbi's PvP 1-3, then there's no way you'd win against Stork if he was actually preparing for the series.

Im just a bit dissapointed at the fact how bad Kal handled that 2 gate cheese..
And building a forge to go for cannons was absurd. And if u do so at least protect it with your probes wenn its done and when its being built dont let kill u 7 probes with 1 zealot because u just let your probes stand around a warping cannon the opponennt wasnt that interested in killing anymore, anyway..

Actually, JangBi would have stood a very good chance against stork. They are team mates and JangBi might be more comfortable vs Stork in a live game (he did beat him an OSL or 2 back aswell, but Stork was shaky then).

Yeah, very likely. The only one I can think of that comes close is the one where Jaedong beat Kal in the finals. YarnC, not Tempest.
Oops, getting messed up there with FBH for a minute. Actually even less impressive then, since Yarnc's ZvP < Tempest PvP.

I think both Free and Bisu are capable of beating JangBi straight. So my guess is that the winner will come from the other bracket!

just got done watching the games
game 1 jangbi's tech was always a step ahead, and despite losing a lot of units in the mid game Jangbi's macro kept him alive long enough to wear down his opponent. kal basically forfeited the game after he completely gave up on defending the harass or doing any harass himself. he played much more aggressively towards the mid-games but just couldn't close it out without even a semblance of any harass. jangbi played well in many aspects, although not without his faults, but kal just played poorly. jangbi's nerves seemed to be present early on, but he settled in and found a groove, while kal just looked like a train wreck.
game 2 seemed to be going strongly in Jangbi's favor after those massive storm drops on kal's main, but then kal retaliated by storming like 4-5 of jangbi's templars in the battle at the middle of the map, turning jangbi away abruptly. i found this game very well played overall by both players, with Jangbi harassing more effectively and displaying some beautiful storms, but kal's battle micro paying off in big ways. Jangbi essentially made one mistake the entire game and kal capitalized on it. really enjoyable game with some amazing storms.
after jangbi distracted kal with the reaver drop and he broke out of the contain in game 3 Jangbi never looked back. Just superior reaver/shuttle micro throughout as he contained Kal long enough to get a deciding advantage. Exceptional play by JangBi this game imo.
game 4, well it was a predictable proxy gate strat that kal failed to predict in time. gosu use of pylons to trap the goons
despite his one mistake in game 2 jangbi looked like the far superior player throughout this series. people really need to stop doubting him so much - he's got just as much a chance of taking this MSL as bisu/free does.
Kal is reminding me more and more of the protoss version of UpMagiC - a creative player whose mechanics just are strong enough to tussle with the big dogs. Obviously he's better than Up ever really was, but the similarities are still there imo.

No, I think Bisu is the favorite. He is the definition of 'clutch,' and has excellent nerves. He has been here before, and prevailed.
Also, his PvP is pretty much even with Stork's (just slightly worse, maybe). If Free manages to beat Bisu, Free would be the favorite I think (having proven himself).
Still, it should be pretty even, as long as both Jangbi and Free have control of their nerves. Here's to an excellent final!

I mean seriously... I just rewatched that. He had ~25 goons, 4 zealots, and a few templar (probably without enough energy for storm) against like 5 goons (he killed two before the real engagement began), 1 reaver, 3 zealots, and 2 templars (one of which already used its storm, the other was probably empty). He sniped one of the templar pretty quickly too, and then he retreats!?!? It didn't seem like he was aware of the harass before then, so he didn't move back because of that. My mind is just boggled why he didn't end it there. The game was over, any harass Jangbi could have done wouldn't have mattered when he started plowing into his main. Ugh.
Anyways, Kal's PvP isn't that bad and on a good day he can beat anyone. On a bad day... he throws away games. Actually... it probably depends more on the particular game than the day. >_>

Just watched these games and all I can say is "WOW!" This was a GOOD series.
I don't know how Jangbi came back in game 1, probably due to his amazing harassment with templar (i counted like 10-15 probe kills). Then I don't know how he lost in game 2 even after those super psi storms. The cheese at the end was cute too
I gotta say, Jangbi is good. Really good. I don't know if Kal was just playing poorly but Jangbi could seemingly harass whenever he wanted to and he kept Kal stuck inside his base defending with a lot of wasted goons quite often. Really sick play, I hope Jangbi goes on to win.

I'm VERY happy to see so many great Protoss in such a relatively short time span.. too bad Reach/rA died (retired) too soon to see their followers in this golden age xD

Yeah, but don't you think the fact that he absolutely owned Jangbi on the first TWO freaking major encounters, and STILL lost, say something about his ability/game-sense PvP?
I was expecting for much of the game for Kal to just gather his forces and 1a2a3a into Jangbi's base. And instead he does nothing while Jangbi just dropped storms all over his mineral line, come back from his deficit, and owns with a better army composition.
