Effort made a mistake imo trying to snipe the cannon with his lings rather than keep them with his hydras (which would have sped up his fight with the zealots at his nat, preserves hydra health, and added hp during the bust). When he wasn't able to get on top of the cannon it was over, the probe losses didn't matter
