32 players and under format:

Bo3 MSL Groups.
Both players veto two maps in turns. Rock-paper-scissors to determine veto order.

A: Player 1 <vs> Player 2
B: Player 3 <vs> Player 4
C: Winner A <vs> Winner B
D: Loser A <vs> Loser B
E: Loser C <vs> Winner D

Winner C: Seed 1
Winner E: Seed 2

If under 32 players, some groups will be Round Robin Bo3:

A: Player 1 vs. Player 2
B: Player 1 vs. Player 3
C: Player 2 vs. Player 3

Match wins -> Map wins = Seeding, to avoid tie-breakers. If tie-breakers are still needed (Player 1 2-0 Player 2, Player 2 2-0 Player 3, Player 3 2-0 Player 1, for example), Bo1 round robin. If tied again, shortest replay times for winner advances. Both players veto two maps in turns. Rock-paper-scissors to determine veto order.

Top map score: Seed 1
2nd map score: Seed 2

Ro16 format follows:

Top bracket:
Group A Seed 1 vs. Group E Seed 2

1. ICCup Ladder Rules where applicable.
2. If an administrator asks you to pause a game, you must pause.
3. If you disconnect from a game due to your hours running out, you forfeit the series.
4. If you disconnect/game crashes/whatever due to some other issue that is outside of your control:
      a. If both players agree the game was even: rematch.
      b. If both players agree one person had a significant advantage, win is awarded to that player.
      c. If no agreement can be made, you may request admin review.
5. Keep your computer area clean. Multiple trash bins line the hallway areas. There is sanitizer and paper towels at the front desk. Don't get greasy food on their stuff. We are trying to maintain a good impression and if all goes well, use this venue in the future.
6. Administrator decisions are final.
7. Don't be a dick.

+ Show Spoiler [FAQ] +
1) Do the computers have Brood War?

Yes.

2) How many computers per room, how many rooms, how much each costs, etc.?

~60 total. 40 in the general area. 15 in the high-end area. 4 in each of two private rooms.

Memberships are the recommended option for players. The way this works is, you buy a $20 membership, which gives you $23 of credit for use at the venue (they throw in $3 extra). Being a member means that you pay less per hour for computers. The prices are:

General area: $4/hour, $2/hour with membership (11 hours credit)
Watercooled area: $6/hour, $4/hour with membership (5 hours credit)
Private area: $10/hour, $6/hour with membership (3 hours credit)

The added perk of membership is that if we return to this venue in the future, you will already have it and can just add money to your account as necessary. If you are not planning on entering the tournament, or don’t anticipate staying long, you can forego this option, but it is heavily recommended for tournament participants to get a membership.

We will be negotiating a package deal with the venue once we have a complete head count, in an attempt to make the price distribution more even for everyone regardless of which computers they use in which area.

3) How much space can we imaginably reserve?

As much as we need, with high-end and private areas being reserved first (most likely).

4) Will there be a stream?

Yes.

5) Can we bring a CRT + consoles?

Not enough room/outlets for this.

6) a. Are there any lounge/chilling areas?

Yes, relatively small though. The general and high end areas are relatively open-air, and there is room to stand behind players to obs FPV.

b. Extra chairs available or in close proximity?

Only a few - need to source more chairs.

7) Is there a big screen TV we can stream to?

Yes, in the entrance area, where there is some standing room.

8) Can people bring their own peripherals?

Yes.

10) Can people bring other games on USB sticks?

Yes.

Please either post here or PM me if you wish to go so that we can make a reservation.

The deadline for reserving a spot is June 29th.

*** Donations ***

Click to receive donation link.

Please fill out the PM informing me that you wish to donate to this event and I will provide you with a link.

Matcherino takes a cut and their bracket services are not useful for an in-person event of this nature. PayPal business also takes a cut. This is the best solution. In "Additional Information" you will find examples of previous events like this that I have run and participated in.

Note: You can also donate in-person if you are attending the event!

All donations are greatly appreciated!!!

*** Additional Information ***

This event is being organized by SuGo, Tim, and myself, with preemptive on-site assistance provided by Overtime.

The NYC BW LAN community has a rich history, which you can easily find by searching for "NYC" in the search bar on TL. We have a FaceBook group. I have organized and helped run tournaments in this area in the past, such as this one. There were many other events in Manhattan and Flushing in the past as well. We are hoping to reignite the passion for LAN BW in the NYC area, so we hope that you will come and play!

If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask in the comments.

*** Late Sign-ups ***

Pre-emptive sign-ups are now CLOSED. Anyone who attends without signing up or whilst signing up late does so knowing that they may not get a computer and will thus probably not participate in the tournament.

Please post your Battle.Net account, Race, and MMR in this thread if you plan to attend, even if just for casual games! Even though we can't promise you a computer spot, it would still be nice to know that you are coming so that we could maybe figure something out on the day of, but no promises.

Example:

Battle.net Account: ILOVEKITTENS#1474
Race: Russian Protoss
MMR: 1950

Official Announcement #11: "Thank You"s + Feedback Requests!

Hello everyone!

I have so many people to thank, that to address every person individually would take up multiple screens of text. So, I would like to say thank you to everyone!

Thank you to my co-administrators and those that helped us along the way - without you, this event would not have been possible!

Thank you to the donors and sponsors! You helped make this event incredibly hype, you chose to provide us with what turned out to be much-needed and much-appreciated expense coverage, and you helped us draw people from hundreds of miles away to Flushing - all for a LAN we didn't expect to break $160 or 16 participants. Your support made this event bigger and better than we could have imagined.

Thank you to the owners, managers, and staff of the venue! Without them constantly taking the time to help us set up, answer questions, and deal with me coming there multiple times and testing multiple computers on their admin accounts, there would be no tournament, period. They gave us a great discount and refund policy (the latter of which they did of their own volition), allowed us to reserve 80% of the venue, and were willing to work with us when unexpected problems arose. The snacks and beverages were key.

Thank you to all of the photographers and videographers at the event! I expected that I would have more time to walk around and take photos, but I ended up taking only ONE at the very end of the tournament. Your presence was greatly appreciated, as was your commitment to bringing expensive gear to the venue.

Thank you to the tournament entrants, their supporters/cheerleaders/friends, and all attendees! If we ran this tournament and only Tim, SuGo, and myself showed up - we'd still have fun, but it would obviously not be even close to the fun and hype we experienced on game day. It was a pleasure to meet all of you and without each and every one of you taking the time to attend this event, it wouldn't even be worth talking about. We hope to see you again soon!

Thank you to all of the stream viewers! You demonstrated that the interest in foreign LAN BW is not limited to one's local scene. You came and supported your favorite players, asked for pictures of their butt, talked smack, added valuable commentary during the games, donated to the next tour, and overall your presence and excitement is deeply appreciated. We hope you will tune in for the next one!

Thank you to the Lucia Pizza and Picnic Garden! People brought their appetites and the food you provided was delicious. Special shout-out to Picnic Garden for running late for us and staying in contact with us as our reservation time was pushed later, and later, and later.

Thank you to TeamLiquid and its staff for helping me with behind-the-scenes stuff and allowing me to submit this event to the calendar! The visibility of this event's stream made the stream itself lively and fun.

Thank you to everyone in this thread who provided us with encouragement and feedback and kept the topic alive - the exposure as a result of this thread's activity undoubtedly helped keep the excitement levels high and allowed more people to find out about the event and attend.

Thank you everyone!

---

Now, let's talk about the future.

First and foremost, we would like to get feedback from our attendees and our stream viewers. We are committed to making the next event better for everyone involved, and we have learned a lot as a result of running this first tournament. However, your feedback will help us target specific problems we may have missed and will tell us where we should be directing our future attention and efforts. Thus, we hope that you will help us do a better job next time by filling out the appropriate questionnaires:

>>> NYC LAN #1 Attendee Feedback <<<

>>> NYC LAN #1 Viewer Feedback <<<

We are looking forward to hearing your feedback and suggestions! Thank you.

VODs from the event will be exported to YouTube over the next couple days in segments. In the meantime, you can take a look at the Twitch VOD:

Full Tournament Twitch VOD

Now, as for the next tournament... Considering the feedback we've already received and the interest that has been expressed in having a future event, it'd be stupid not to run another one. We do not have any specific information at this time because we want to make sure we gather feedback and incorporate it into our planning. We're hoping that this will satisfy you for now: we are running another NYC BW LAN tournament, in October of 2019

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT

Tournament Day Procedure

1. Check in with an administrator (Jealous, Tim, SuGo - whoever is by the entrance of the venue).
      a. Early sign-ups: If you are participating in the tournament, buy-in. (5$)
      b. If you would like pizza delivery, throw in. (5$)
      c. Receive name tag - use the same name as you will use in-game. You can write your real name as well, if you wish.
      d. Early sign-ups: Get assigned a computer.

2. Register for membership at the front desk, or pay for hours up front. All reserved computers, regardless of where they are in the venue, are $3 per hour. This equates to 7 hours and 40 minutes of play time for a $20 membership. All tournament participants are heavily encouraged to buy a membership, as this means your time will not run out mid-game.

3. If you are participating in the tournament, it is recommended that you set up your peripherals, make sure everything is in order, and then you are free to do whatever you want until 2:45. At 2:45, you are expected to be set up and ready to go. Tournament matches will start by 3:00 PM.

4. If you are not participating in the tournament and you signed up early, once you have received your computer assignment, you are free to do whatever.

5. If you are not an early sign-up and wish to participate in the tournament, don't go too far. At 2:45, we will assess how many people we have, how many computers are available, etc. and then we will start filling in tournament slots as space allows. Order of priority is in order of sign-ups on the thread, followed by order of arrival at the venue. Reminder: there is NO guarantee that people who didn't sign up early will get to participate in the tournament. Do NOT take an unreserved computer spot unless told to do so at this point.

6. If you have any questions or concerns during the event, find an admin. We will all be sitting in designated areas. See lay-out below. Note: Try to not interrupt games, or stream, whenever possible. If all three of us are busy, then choose an admin that is casting over an admin that is playing.

If you have any technical/language questions or concerns during the event, find a staff member from the venue.

7. We will be using Challonge for the bracket. Challonge link will be posted here once it is filled out. This is where you will be uploading your replays. We will be helping people find their opponent at the venue as well. Please refer to the seating chart below if necessary.

8. As people leave/decide they no longer want to play, please inform the administrators. As vacancies appear, we will be decreasing the reserved area to allow for more walk-in customers to use the facility. This will require shuffling people around - in other words, expect that after some time, you may have to change computers, particularly if you are in the general area.

Unfortunately, the operating system on the machines is entirely in Chinese. However, I have made a guide for how to start StarCraft/open your replay folder:

Other Announcements

1. I would like to give a big shout-out to Disregard, who will be contributing a classic Team Liquid shirt to the 3rd place finalist!

2. I would also like to give another huge shout-out to the secret organization "Revival of Brood War" who have upped their total contribution to $740, making the total prize pool a total of...

$1172 + Buy-Ins!

Revival of Brood War's willingness to shoulder some of the administrative expenses has been a huge help!

3. This announcement has been delayed by some inner workings but as of Monday, all future donations (that are not done on-site or that have not been discussed prior) will be going to the next tournament. This is simply due to logistics constraints, but it doesn't hurt to spread the love out over a longer period of time and over multiple iterations! We are committed to making these tournaments a regular occurrence, and any donations you make from this day forward will be going towards that and are as always greatly appreciated.

4. There are snacks available at the venue. I tried some sort of vegeterian jerky-like food and it was really tasty, but it made my fingers smell weird for a while. The herbal drink they had in the fridge was really refreshing too. Can't vouch for any of the other stuff because I've never seen it before but the staff will gladly help you make decisions. They also have instant ramen that they will heat up for you. Here are some photos of the snack selection:

5. The back-up dining location is Congee Village, which is across the street and down the block from the venue. This is just in case the tournament ends late and we are not going to make it to KBBQ in time.

I went there last weekend and the food was pretty good, the bartender was friendly, and it had a pretty nice atmosphere. Here are some photos:

GLHF!~

EDIT: If you are taking pub trans, the LIRR is faster by ~10-15 minutes but costs four times as much ($2.75 vs. $11) and is otherwise not any better than the 7 train in terms of drop-off location. Using the 7 train is recommended.

Official Announcement #10

Chessz has generously donated $125 to the event, $100 of which will be going to the prize pool and $25 which will be going to cover expenses (which is very much appreciated <3). This raises the total prize pool to...

$1272 + Buy-ins!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed, and I would like to remind everyone that any future donations - whether they happen throughout the tournament stream or outside of it, will all be going to the next tournament!

I would also like to note that I added another number to the Tournament Procedures, which I forgot to put in last night. Here it is:

"8. As people leave/decide they no longer want to play, please inform the administrators. As vacancies appear, we will be decreasing the reserved area to allow for more walk-in customers to use the facility. This will require shuffling people around - in other words, expect that after some time, you may have to change computers, particularly if you are in the general area."

Official Announcement #9!

A secret organization named...

"Revival of Brood War"

has generously donated $640!

Out of this sum, 80%, or $512 will be added to the prize pool, bringing us to a total of...

$1092 for the prize pool!

As per the donor's specifications, 20% will be used to cover organizational expenses for TOs and members of Revival of Brood War - such as transportation expenses during the location scouting process (NOT our expenses as individual players/participants), equipment rental, etc. The main organizer of RoBW is interested in fostering a maintainable level of commitment for this and future events, hence providing us with expense coverage. If there are any funds from the 20% remaining after this, it will be invested into providing food during the event.

I just want to be clear about this: We are still an entirely non-profit venture.

All of the money that we receive from donors and contributors is going into the prize pool unless otherwise specified by the donor. The other options are that they cover necessary expenses, or are re-invested into the event in one way or another.

This is now officially one of the biggest BW tournaments with one of the highest prize pools in NYC of all time
... and certainly within the past 10+ years.

Official announcement #8!

We have selected a venue for the KBBQ!

Picnic Garden
154-05 Northern Blvd

Please either post here or PM me if you wish to go so that we can make a reservation.

The deadline for reserving a spot is June 29th.

Just post something like "sign me up for KBBQ."

We will be making a reservation for 10:30 PM. This is in anticipation of the tournament lasting about 6.5 hours, and then allowing an hour for debriefing and getting to Picnic Garden. The buffet closes at 1 AM.

There are tables accommodating 12 or 8 people. We will decide which combination of tables (2 x 8? 3 x 12?) we will be reserving once we get a final head count.

Keep in mind that this is 1.3 miles from the LAN venue.

These are the transportation options and estimated duration for each:

+ Show Spoiler [Transportation] +
1. Driving: 5-15 minutes.

2. Bus: 15-25 minutes, including time walking to the bus stop.
Q12, Q13, and Q25 busses all work, and seem to run every 20 minutes or so.

3. Uber: 10-25 minutes.
You can arrange for a shared ride with other people at the venue. The recommended way of doing so is ordering UberX for ~4 people, or UberXL for 5-6 people. It will go on one person's account, and the rest can chip in with cash or buying a drink at Picnic Garden

4. Walking: ~30 minutes.

As the tournament progresses, we will have a better idea of whether or not that reservation is a realistic time for us or whether we need to move it. This time is thus subject to change in either direction by ~1 hour.

Looking forward to pigging out with all of you!

Official announcement #7!

1. We have received an anonymous $20 donation! A huge thank you to everyone who has donated, you can remain mysterious if you like but we will still say thank you, and you know who you are <3

This brings us to a total of $580 + Buy-ins for the tournament prize pool!

2. Pre-sign-ups are officially CLOSED!

We have a total of 49 attendees of which at least 36 signed up as competitors for the tournament! I am pretty sure this is the largest turn-out we have ever seen in a grassroots NYC BW LAN! Thank you all for your interest and for signing up ahead of time. You will all be guaranteed computer spots at the venue! Now begins the process of negotiating price and which areas we will be reserving. Stay tuned for updates!

Official announcement #6!

1. We have received a $10 donation from an anonymous D rank Terran from California! He said that he hopes we run the best tournament ever, that Brood War is the best ever. We'll do our best!

This brings us to $560 + Buy-ins for the tour!

2. We have decided on two formats for the tournament.

Looking at the current number of sign-ups, it seems almost certain that we will have more than 32 players in the tournament. However, we want to be prepared for all possibilities; here are the 32-and-under and over 32 player formats:

+ Show Spoiler [32 and Under] +
32 players and under format:

Bo3 MSL Groups.
Both players veto two maps in turns. Rock-paper-scissors to determine veto order.

A: Player 1 <vs> Player 2
B: Player 3 <vs> Player 4
C: Winner A <vs> Winner B
D: Loser A <vs> Loser B
E: Loser C <vs> Winner D

Winner C: Seed 1
Winner E: Seed 2

If under 32 players, some groups will be Round Robin Bo3:

A: Player 1 vs. Player 2
B: Player 1 vs. Player 3
C: Player 2 vs. Player 3

Match wins -> Map wins = Seeding, to avoid tie-breakers. If tie-breakers are still needed (Player 1 2-0 Player 2, Player 2 2-0 Player 3, Player 3 2-0 Player 1, for example), Bo1 round robin. If tied again, shortest replay times for winner advances. Both players veto two maps in turns. Rock-paper-scissors to determine veto order.

Top map score: Seed 1
2nd map score: Seed 2

Ro16 format follows:

Top bracket:
Group A Seed 1 vs. Group E Seed 2
Group B Seed 1 vs. Group F Seed 2
Group C Seed 1 vs. Group G Seed 2
Group D Seed 1 vs. Group H Seed 2
---
Bottom bracket:
Group E Seed 1 vs. Group A Seed 2
Group F Seed 1 vs. Group B Seed 2
Group G Seed 1 vs. Group C Seed 2
Group H Seed 1 vs. Group D Seed 2

Ro8, Ro4, Finals as follows. Finals will be Bo5.

+ Show Spoiler [Over 32] +
Double-Elimination "Forced 32" Tournament
Bo3 Winners' until Bo5 Grand Final, Bo1 Losers' until Bo3 Losers' Final.

X = Amount of players

(X-32) * 2 = Anti-seed players, play in Winners' Ro"X"

Winners advance to true Ro32 Winner's Bracket.
Losers relegated to Losers' bracket Ro"X" which then goes on to become true first Ro16 Losers' Bracket.

Example bracket for 35 players. (35-32) *2 = 6 Anti-Seed players in Ro"35":

https://challonge.com/tournaments/bracket_generator?ref=yMLeIrnGSG

Anti-seeds will be chosen by time of arrival, by volunteer, or by MMR - depending on how things are looking on the day of.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

***IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT (#5)***

1. Due to the unexpectedly high level of interest and the approaching deadline for submitting an accurate head count, we have decided to make a guaranteed placement deadline. What this means is, people who sign up before June 14th are guaranteed a computer and space in the venue. Anyone who signs up after this date will possibly have to play in the unreserved space at the venue, if it is available. Just to be clear, everyone who has already signed up in the thread or contacted me via Discord/Facebook is assured a spot.

2. Venue updates! Be sure to read the FAQ. If you have any additional questions, feel free to post them here.

One of the private computer rooms:

Yes.

3. I would like to give a huge shout out to Overtime who met me at the venue and then drove us to the planned KBBQ location. Stay tuned for more updates on that.

I also want to give a shout out to ZoW and Zergneedsfood who were in the area and stopped by the venue to meet up with us briefly. Was great seeing you guys again, looking forward to spending more time with you at the event!

Fourth official announcement!

We have received a $100 donation from an NYC LAN veteran and perpetual homeboy, Fazers!

This brings us to a total of $550 + Buy-ins!

Keep in mind that even if you can't throw in sums on the level of these generous donors, any donation is greatly appreciated, and will earn a shout-out not only in the thread but during the tournament and on stream (assuming we have one)! There is no contribution too small <3

That being said, things are certainly continuing to heat up. I'm very excited to see the direction this is going! Are you?

Third official announcement! Get hype

We are now officially sponsored by eSport.fund!

Thanks in large part to the hard work, dedication, and love for Brood War of Rus_Brain, we have come to an easy and pleasant agreement of terms with eSport.fund and have secured this sponsorship for our prize pool. We are proud to add their logo to our banner. Every cent of their contribution will be going directly into the pool, which means...

With SuGo's $100, the Anonymous Protoss Player's $150, and now eSport.fund's $200, we have a grand total of...

$450 + Buy-ins in the prize pool!

Second official announcement! This one is big.

We have received a $150 donation from an anonymous Protoss player!

What this means is that SuGo's $100 are locked in, bringing us to a current total of $250 + Buy-Ins for the tournament!

We currently have 31 pre-sign-ups, of which at least 23 are interested in participating in the tournament.

Get hype!

+ Show Spoiler [Announcement 1] +
Hello everyone, first official announcement!

1. We now have a Blizzard license for this tournament.

2. Map pool has been decided! The format of the tournament is still a bit up in the air because it depends heavily on how many computers will be reserved and how many players will sign up, but in the meantime I thought it'd be nice for you guys to know ahead of time and start practicing on the maps:

4 Player: Fighting Spirit, Circuit Breaker, Python, In the Way of an Eddy
3 Player: Longinus, Sylphid
2 Player: Crossing Field

Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

Of course its worth it. Even if you stand no realistic chance of winning its still gonna be a fun experience to play in the event. That being said, there's a wide range of skill level in the signups already, so you'll fit in just fine
