I need Stork to pull through. Today is bad enough already, it's Monday, one has get back to work, I'm out of coffee too, no need to make it even more dreadful.

It's going to be brutal on Gold Rush v Ssak. I fear the Tesagi.

Ssak won't be an easy opponent. Unless Stork is in strong form, Ssak will probably crush Stork.

Stork, Last will advance to next round.

That is so fucking positive damn, Stork currently is doing really badly vs T on the new maps so I don't think he can beat a player like Last, I hope he advances in second place tho!

Last and sSak quite likely to advance. Stork could potentially beat sSak but I have a hard time believing he'll get the best of Last. sSak is the enigma here. If he plays as well as he did last ASL, he might even advance in first place lol.

So is it Where or MisO? Which handle will be displayed? There doesn't seem to be such a consensus on this as with Killer. This is the real question of the day!

Stork would have an easier time if MisO could pull off a surprise win v Last and they would meet in the winners.

In the past few days in the couple of hours I managed to catch Stork streaming he was beating EffOrt, hero, July in vZ matches.

vT however, he had a hard time beating Rush, Mind, Mong, FBH even just once, while losing to Flash, Sharp, Rush, Mind, Mong many times.

Maybe he'll pull out that scout build he used to beat Mind on Crossing Field and that will be enough to get the best of Last. He might be young enough not to have ever seen one of those units.

Maybe, and atleast he won't go out first out of his group I don't think his PvZ has been pretty decent for the most part

Stork has not scare anyone, excepting Flash. His TvsP is very strong, especially on new maps, he can use carrier.

Last only takes win by people are weaker than him and Ssak is skill so well but he will lose at Rush Gold map, the map of the mind war.

Today is all about the Stork for me. Will he show up to play? Has he had enough time? Keeping up with the Stork progress thread has been enjoyable and I'd love for it to pay off here.

Heart says Stork can show why he was once considered one of the five best players on the planet.

Cheering for Stork here. Terran games are gonna be tough but hopefully he can get the job done. I'm curious how MIsO will go. To be honest I don't know to much about how good he is.

I think MisO is a lot better than people give him credit for. He's dead last in the ASL 4 Power Rank and I can't agree with that. He's had solid games across GTB and KCM Race Survivals and he looks more than decent.

That said, this is a tough group for him. Even if he's among the stronger Zerg players right now, sSak and Last might be almost insurmountable.

I wonder what pre-match behavior is considered appropriate and endearing to Korean fans. Confidence with a touch of modesty, the "I'm doing it for you, I'm nothing without you" attitude and respecting the opponent, I guess?

I didn't have time to watch and update that thread properly but all I can say it will be haaard for him to get through potentially 3 PvTs.

It seems like both the harass-heavy Gold Rush and macro oriented Crossing Field posed some problems for him, even though he tried to make carriers work. It went fine like one time out of every three matches.

Anyway, he's always better offline so I hope he'll pull through.

Now, Last v Where. Last already better than Light yesterday.

Ok I've genuinely never seen a bunker rush executed like that before. Can't zerg just ignore that bunker and let it finish? I mean he can't even push further from that bunker location, a bunker within range of that bunker still isn't in range of the hatchery. looks like he could just let bunker finish, let marines poke at the hatch, avoid maynarding any drones until pool is done, make a sunken? Seemed like he lost 5-6 drones and a lot of mining time for basically.. nothing.

Miso completely overreacted to the bunker, and since he was already quite far behind went for a ling all-in that utterly failed. Could have gg'd right there.

Is it the one-sided game or mutas don't look too good on this map? You can get your 3rd gas pretty safely anyway and the ground above the natural is accessible by MnM. Not even a nice spot for guardian morph.

All the lings dying to get 1 marine and a supply depot was sad to watch, anyway.

I feel like Stork going proxy gates is something that should happen in the grand finals. First game of group play? Maybe it's just the map.

stork really thought this through. If Terran doesn't see it, it's autowin and if he does he can pressure with early goons, because Terran has two defend 2 points and gets an easy 3rd because Terran has to kill the gas. Pretty cool.

+40 supply lead when Terran initially pushed out? 4 base reinforcements vs 2 base reinforcements, eco had enough time to kick in, gates were up.

late leg speed and needed a round of zealots earlier to really break that push before ssak got into that position right outside the natural. i think stork couldve given up the natural and still held onto those 3 bases but :/

He needed some gates at 9 so he could have a flank or backstab option. Econ and army were both solidly to his advantage but he was forced to engage unfavorably.

Well the forge was at the nat and it was still spinning while he was on 0-0. He also had archives there but no templar play out. But yeah he could've tried perhaps to gear up and try to break it one last time.

also a problem caused by the lack of gateways in a different location. If he had 3 gates at 9 he could have given up his natural, saved main army and only engaged the push after a 12 goon/zealot army forced part of it back.

He had some there and was even producing a couple of goons. Not sure if he missed a couple of rounds or why he never tried to flank with it from the left, though.

Getting proxy gates that early isn't common for Protoss tho. You're saying he should have took his 4th at 9 and made gates there, right? Terran went 2 base drop so i think he wanted to take a closer 4th just to be safe (safer worker transfer, faster to reach that base to defend vs drops because he won't need to walk through mine fields).

Also, even if he has a few proxy gates in order to flank he wouldn't have been able to pump out a ton of units that early in the game, they could have been dealt with with just mines/vulture pokes.

I think they were blocked from leaving underneath. He did have some in his top left base, but I don't think the eggs were dead (so they could only leave through going towards his main, thus basically just being slower reinforcements) and they were added too late. I don't think that's a good flanking gateway location anyway.

He killed at least one gas when he took the 4th (against vultures I assume). So there was no way even if he killed the eggs.

I don't even think the gates need to be at the 4th, tbh. If I play pvt fighting spirit and I'm 5 and he's 7, I take 3 as my third and 1 as my 4th, but I'm adding gateways 6-8 in 11 main. I think he could have made 3-4 gateways at 9 at a much earlier time, maybe even before taking the 4th, and it'd enable him to flank or backstab in a way that really crushes dedicated 2 base pushes, especially on a map like this where he can block off expansions so the refugee style of play works out wonderfully.

yeah just very unimpressive play from our zerg today. Seems like he was thrown off his game plan in both matches and his improvised solutions sucked.

he should have just cancelled the hatchery at natural immediately, start expanding at the back, then just tech up with lings and hydras instead of forcing a ramp break and losing all those drones..

misO totally didn't need to freak out, this map has a back expo. He already made a colony in his main, instead of a forced proxy hatch, just expand in the back and chill out homie

Many options for Zerg with the back expansion. Get a few hydras and break the contain, even try 2h muta, fast lurkers, anything to secure his 3rd (or natural). But he totally choked. Glad to see Stork in the deciding match though. Stork hwaiting!

yea on most maps zealots blocking your ramp so you cant leave your main is a death sentence for zerg, but on this specific one it's actually possible to go on playing a somewhat normal game just taking your back natural.

Perhaps he lacked practice partners. And I guess we can also add in the nerves of being on stage (Stork has real advantage on that side)

Last on FS. Dayum. This is going to be brutally hard.

yeah :/ this is the problem with most BW pros, they can't respond on the fly and adapt to the map and/or situation. that game just now was the perfect example of that...

Yeah, that in itself isn't likely to bring Stork the win.

What I meant was, Stork seemed to struggle to get a grasp on how to put together winning strategies on Gold Rush and Crossing Field. On the other hand, with FS being a standard map Stork won't have to battle the map. He has to only focus on battling Last.

STORK WINS.

Incredible!

Incredible!

He's done it. After a failed reaver drop and having his nat and 3rd demolished by Last's 2base fac push Stork turns the whole thing around with beautiful storms, great macro, and amazing stasises. Samsung Protoss, Dino toss, Stork -- at his best.

I think people are failing to realize although Last killed the 3rd base, he lost all his tanks in a not very efficient fight. If Last pulled back after killing the natural, he would have probably won.

Are you out of the loop? 15 dollars for Remaster, it's been almost one month too.

Great game by Stork. Love the way he moves around the map. Why hide the reaver tech but not the robo? I think Last saw the shuttle and knew it was drops.

Someone please analyse that game in a writeup or something because Stork coming back after
1) Going Speed shuttle + Reaver and getting nothing done with either, and
2) Losing 2 Nexuses from Last pushing super hard
is incredible to me.

Man, I'm so happy for Stork! He played such a solid game. After his early exit last season, that's a glimmer of hope for him to return to his old form. Motivation is what he needs, maybe, and this is a great way to go there - beating one of the best terrans currently.

According to Stork in the first game he said that the 'u' key disappeared for his shuttle so he had to unload them manually by clicking on the wireframes.

Killing those tanks which were shooting at his 3rd with the shuttle and dt was key. It allowed him to get his nat and 3rd back up pretty quickly. If Last kept those tanks he could have gathered 1 more round of vultures and go kill the main.

I don't understand why his upgrades were so late, he was maxed but moved out with only 1-0 upgrades. I assumed his upgrades were gonna be really fast considering how delayed his 4th was.

I LB'd Stork. yeah!!
Well I knew stork was still very much in it when I saw the supply count after Last killed 2 bases. They were close (bad for P), but the tank count was gone. all of that was vultures. no threat to Stork. He just needed to not die for a while.
What I didnt catch is how/why Last screwed up the initial push. There was no way Stork should have broken out of that contain. He shldve just taken a few tanks to kill the middle base. He instaed took everything and allowed Stork to get out of his natural.

Last was too sure of himself, I think, too certain he had the edge against Stork. Twice in the game he chose to wait and macro up harder and do a "safe" attack, and each time he did that he gave Stork too much breathing room. The cheeses in Stork's first two games may have contributed to that feeling, the idea that even Stork thought he had no chance in a straight up game. Intentional or not I think Last got mind-gamed.

Quite the opposite. Last tried too hard to go for the kill and lost his army killing the 3rd base. From there he had to rebuild his whole army which allowed Stork enough time to rebuild his nexuses and macro back up.

I don't understand why his upgrades were so late, he was maxed but moved out with only 1-0 upgrades. I assumed his upgrades were gonna be really fast considering how delayed his 4th was.

i think last also targeted the wrong stuff. he probably should've split his army into taking out the gateways at the top right and the main base, because he surely had to know that stork had a bank and was going to be able to remax quite quickly.

and yeah for a 2-1 6 fac 3 base push that was pretty slow. guess we'll need to analyse the fpvods to see what was really up.

I think a couple of things went well for stork in the last game.

1. he killed all the tanks in the initial push even though he lost 2 nexiis, he had 2 left.
2. he had a good engagement in the second battle wiping out most of last's army, good storm and stasis.
3. last couldnt/didnt get a 4th up fast enough.

it definitely was last's game to lose. yes he lost his entire army but stork did lose two base mining for a considerable amount of time.

if TT1 is right and last only pushed with 1-0 in the end, then that was his losing mistake was not getting upgrades.

I agree. Top tier protosses know how to break pushes and win against maxed out T armies. You cant just max and then expect to roll them over like other Ps.
Whether or not Stork's cheese affected Last we dont know yet, but he certainly acted like he could easily beat Stork straight up

Kind of curious if taking 6 o clock was an option for Last instead of 11 o clock's natural.

One thing I that for sure kept him in the game was the hero dark templar that killed off like 6 of Last's tanks right after Last killed Stork's third.

I don't think Last scanned or noticed that DT there and that was crucial.

Also, one other thing I noticed was that after killing Stork's 3rd Last went up to top with two vultures to block the 1 o'clock base's natural but he never went up the ramp to check the 1 o'clock. I think that he missed the fact that Stork already had the expansion up.

Stork played with great pace this last match. Something I missed last season and in a couple of tough vT losses on his stream.

lol, most of the korean pros would probably rather play Stork than Last. That's like saying Shine is more talented than Bisu because he wins head to head.

How is that even close to being related to what I've said?

Last practices a lot, he is constantly one of the best player online, but Stork, similar to when he was playing on samsung khan, can be one of the best players without the need to heavily practice. He's just good at the game, despite all the mistakes. So yeah, ofc most pros would rather play Stork.

And Shine isn't more talented than Bisu, I don't know how you got that from my original post.

Totally agree, Last should've split his tank force to kill the 3 o'clock. He led a bunch of tanks into an envelope instead. People have lost wars that way, you know. :D

Watching it, I actually thought that part of the reason why Stork was committing to his attack with the goons against his natural, even after it looked like a losing play, was that he wanted to make sure Last kept focusing on his natural so he wouldn't scan the dt.

He was distance mining which is more effective than most expect.
I thought it was very even after the initial push. If not a P advantage. Again, how Last managed to lose his entire army to a P that split his army and had the backstab group vaporized, I dont quite understand, he really underestimated stork then. He probably thought he already won.
After that, if he really forgot upgrades then that was huge, but even if he didnt, it was going to be an uphill battle. Stork knows how to break pushes and trade units efficiently. Last stayed on 3 bases for too long. Maybe with upgrades he would have been able to hold the 4th and stabilize, but now we''ll never know...

Stork's play from then on out was stellar. He knew that Last's strength was in getting a good position, getting more expansions up, and just overwhelming Stork several minutes down the line when the loss of those Nexuses really kicked in. He wanted to trade off really quickly to prevent Last from moving out, and then when Last re-maxed and went for 9 o'clock, Stork moved in again to deny it, since it was Last's only hope at that point.

Shaky start, but man did Stork pull it back.

That makes perfect sense. Even the observer focused on that attack so it's very plausible Last did the same and just switched back to see he had nothing left of his initial army.

I would like to watch the replay to confirm but I also suspect he indeed missed out on Stork's 1 o'clock expo, when he placed down the mines there and just turned around, so he might have decided to not expand because he thought he was still ahead anyway.

Last threw his lead the first time he pushed out over the bridge (leading to his main) after he was maxed. Both players were maxed but Stork had 4 bases and was taking his 5th. Last's edge in that scenario would have been to have an upgrade lead (wish he should have had) so he could roll Stork's army cost efficiently. Instead he only had 1-0 and decided to push out with his tanks exposed and no mine protection, he lost ~40 supply worth of tanks for free there. At that point Stork's eco kicked in again so he was able to just churn out gate units and keep the momentum.

I don't understand why Last would even consider moving out like that with just 1-0 and i don't understand why his 2-1 was so late considering his 4th was suuuuuper delayed, was really weird.

Hey guys, this wont be streamed on youtube anymore? I lost yesterdays game and then got spoiled. I tried to go to the afreeca's site but you can't watch it on demand. It says "until next time". I found the vod on Afreeca but its the korean version and more importantly it keeps buffering. Now I don't want to get spoilers again and don't know how to look for this.

Yea I mentioned it earlier. Stork was saying how the U key wasn't there so he had to click on the wireframes separately to drop his units and because of that he wasn't able to micro his army.

As Trump would say: sad.

They're not streaming to YouTube, but they are uploading the games there afterward.

Here are today's games. Beware they were uploaded literally 1 minute ago, and I heard the video is lower resolution for a short time after it's uploaded.

Also it must be available on demand from Afreeca site, as I watched day 1 videos from there. But I can't find day 2 VODs. Currently it's "replaying" the matches. So maybe they put it up as a VOD after the rebroadcast ends.

Beautiful last game from Stork. Thought he muffed it taking his fourth way too soon after losing the reaver so cheaply but what do I know?!

Last made a critcal error by sacrificing way too much to take out the 3 o'clock after killing Stork's nat. He would've been better containing him to his main imo and using smaller forces to poke at his expos. Think Last got a little cocky. I think maybe he didnt scout the 1 o'clock expo. Crucial error if so!

I just re-watched that part where Last goes to Stork's 3rd. It's actually _after_ Stork tries to push into Last's nat with his goons, yet the DT went unnoticed. It killed 4 tanks and weakened the other 4 as well, all which ended up being taken out by Stork.

The two vultures going scouting towards the 1 o'clock happens before Last's push and I do think he made an error or just a costly mistake not going up the ramp. You can check his vultures checking the nat but not the main of the 1 o'clock here at this timestamp.

Actually that was something I feared for a second as well. When watching him play spons in the past couple of days he lost more than I can count to pushes while had not much of an army as he was over-expanding. Glad it worked out all good today!

Looking forward to the group selection!

Addendum: Here again a kettle of vultures go towards the 1 o'clock, see a pylon at the nat then turn around. I am trying to check if there was ever a scan from Last but it seems like he never figured out that an expansion was up and running there for Stork.

It was a good decision to move out, Stork invested heavily into reavers and his 4th was late. At that point they were pretty even on supply and sometimes it's a good decision to push out earlier instead of letting P have a chance of getting back in the game. Also he knew zealot speed wasn't going to finish soon. He did make a key mistake of losing all his tanks to kill a nexus which is not a good trade.

I think TT1 was referring to the second push as Last was taking his 4th.
The first push was, as you said, a very good decision which should have ended the game or given him an insurmountable lead. The mistake with the tanks and, apparently a DT which did too much damage, cost Last the game.

I have just re-watched the game. Last's push while had a huge tank count was very low on vulture. So army divide would have been a self suicide decision. We should remember that Stork had speed shuttle full of zealot and dark templar at this point.

Last made a critical error in his game vs ssak where he had an air force designed to stop ssak's air fleet of dropships and moved them south for whatever reason right as ssak moved in from the north to drop. Instant gg

I am so glad for sSak. I thought Stork would win group but sSak would get second.

So happy both of them made it out! Well deserved by both of them. Last is an amazing player, but he doesn't show up well enough to tournaments at all.

This is what I'm talking about:

Last pushes out with 1-0 at a point in the game where he should have been 2-1 (considering how late his 4th was, how early his 3rd was and how late he pushed out).

His decision to push out with 1-0 is already flawed.. but then he decides to push out over the bridges and expose his tanks with no mine support, his tanks are completely exposed.

Stork trades out evenly in supply with Last (70 to 70 which obviously isnt good for Terran, he lost a ton of tanks) but he's taking his 5th at this point and already has all his gateways up. Last has to remake his tanks (which takes a long time) and he's reinforcing his army with weak upgrades. He should have been 2-1 when he pushed out and he should have been at least 3-1 by the time the later engagements happened. In any case after this exchange Stork has a huge lead, Last mined out his main and Stork was sitting on 5 bases.

Amazing game, but I'm surprised people expected Ssak to qualify. I was expecting him to come 3-rd in this group.

Anyway, Stork just showed that a talent is for life! It's amazing how he wins the games with his strategic thinking. Only if he had a little better macro and multitasking, he would be unbeatable!

It's interesting that before that battle on the bridge last was 1-0 in upgrades, while immediately after the battle finished he was 2-1 already. The upgrades kicked while the battle was going. Had he crossed the bridge 10 seconds later, we might have seen a different outcome there.

Grats to sSak and Stork. I think Last has a mental block against sSak. It's likely not many people remember but sSak beat Last 3-2 in SSL10 finals despite Last having unstoppable TvT at the time and being up 2-1. Since then, sSak has had his number in several instances including last ASL and this one too.

As for the last game, wp by Stork. Despite losing his 2 nexi, he destroyed Last's army and rebuilt them right away. Last also never found that fourth base I believe so he might've thought it's 3 base vs 1 base at that point. From there, Stork took a great second engagement and thinned out Last's tank line and the rest was history with Stork having the base and eco advantage.

This. 2-1 finished immediately after the battle. Game winning decision from Stork right there imo, very few Protoss attack before the full mech army has moved out of the bridge, but Stork attacked right before Last could lay mines and 2-1 kicked in, catching him offguard . I also like that Stork was using shuttle in every engagement, for dt/zealot drops or to get the storms out safely

I'm not sure the two are analogous. Stork lost a ton of economy, but he was able to clean up that first push quite efficiently and the mech army takes a long time to rebuild, so he was able to get his economy back up while still keeping up in supply.

I guess you could liken it to Terran suiciding 4 groups of bio to kill your natural, but you still have 10 lurkers lol.

Ah that's what you are referring to. I think Last was just trying to set up outside the bridge and not moving out which is quite common for TvP in FS. The main reason behind doing that is if you camp too long in base P can just form a concave outside the bridge and it is very hard to break out. But yeah he probably should have waited a while more to secure that position but definitely good attack from Stork.

Even I am very happy for the commander.
I can't understand why Last played so uncharacteristically weak in both his games? What's up with weak 1-0 upgrades. Very strange. Can someone knowledgeable comment on his decision making? On the other hand two last engagements were state-of-the-art PvT from Stork.

It's interesting to note that 2-1 finished right at the *end* of that engagement. The last few tanks that getting hit by storms had 2-1 I believe. If that was planned...that was a sick ee han timing.

that's largely a fuckup from last, then. It's like a protoss attacking into 30 lings with 10 zealots 7 seconds before +1 is done.

that's largely a fuckup from last, then. It's like a protoss attacking into 30 lings with 10 zealots 7 seconds before +1 is done.

I think fuckup might be too harsh. Not to sound cliche but this really shows what a game of inches brood war can be. That engage itself was about 6-8 seconds, which means that Last was 8 seconds away from 2-1 and was just edging knowing it was about done.

But I guess its these decisions that separate great from bonjwa.

Last taking so long to take his 4th was the weirdest blunder that game in my view. He ceded the econ advantage for no reason there.

Wow Stork is showing his old form again. It's fun now there is another Protoss giving Protoss a chance again.

Storks mine clearing and observer control was one crazy thing about this game as well I think. Stork lost so few units to mines which makes it sooo much harder for terran to win. Stork played a crazy mid/end game.

I am still a bit bummed that Last is out of the tournament already!

I am really impressed with sSak over the past couple of years, I have always dismissed him as a mediocre player at best because that is how I remember him from the pro days.
But he has stayed active throughout the amateur era and has shown some great play.
I should've stopped dismissing him by now...

Stork's observers are quite weird. He has the arguably the best obs positioning in the modern era of play while also managing to suicide observers on turrets every game.

Ssak is one of those people who I wouldn't be surprised whether he wins or loses, even against people like Flash or Bisu.
Aldaris was the good guy of Brood War.
