hey aren't all italian men in love with their ma?
oh great maMA!
anyway, good interview. flash still thinks like a kid and uses very simple logic (eat-->give strength--> keep gaming), adults would care too much of what people think to give honest straight answers like these.
oh and it's gotta be casy cus upmagic was first noticed during shinhan 3.

I thought it was upmagic. I think i read that somewhere cant remember where though.
wut
한동욱 = Casy and I'm pretty sure Flash started playing when Up just started getting famous.
and for the girl question wonder girls, snsd or racing models are your get out of jail card.

I don't think Flash is missing out on anything that he cares about. He's missing out on a lot of things that YOU care about, but to him it's no big deal. agreed 100%.

lot of dumbasses in this thread. thanks for the translation MrHoon, I thought it was great.

Also, with his determination and intelligence, I highly doubt he will have any financial problems later on, whatever profession he chooses. gg_hertzz already covered it pretty well, but sure he may "miss out" on some typical teenage things, but just about every celebrity, pseudo-celebrity, or child prodigy at anything has the same issues. it's simply a trade off, do you think he'd have more fun being normal than he does on a proteam, as the #1 terran in progaming? i doubt it. you can't really do both, and i'm sure flash has plenty of fun with KTF and being kind of a famous guy in school. i suspect he doesn't reveal everything about his social life also.
i mean, if he were to never do progaming and be just an average school teacher or whatever, don't you think that's 1000x more regret and missing out on what could have been? that's like saying "oh federer, you missed out on a lot as a teenager right because you had to practice and travel to so many tournaments!" it's ridiculous and obviously if you're the best at whatever you do and can earn a great living at it, that's probably the right choice. you're not missing out on anything, you are just choosing to experience something better.

About the type of girl question, when TV casters ask guests about 이상현, a lot of times the answers are comparative to Korean tv/movie/k-pop stars. Instead of going: blond, tall, cute eyes, small chin, long hair, bla bla, they just say the name of the korean celeb that gets closer to their ideal girl, so maybe that's the reason for the internet thing answer.
Oh, and the "I feel sorry for progamers, they don't have a life, they are pathetic losers that will die virgin, bla bla bla" it is getting kind of old.
I feel sorry for exploited kids or guys who are really struggling with life throwing shit at their faces every time they try to stand up and go on.
Progamers? It's something they chose, voluntarily, because they love the game, and I'm sure they are pretty damn happy they made it. And they do something that is socially accepted. It's not something nerdy anymore in Korea. However, keeping up with a site that discuss strategy and players of a video-game in the western culture... well, wouldn't THAT be nerdy?
No hanging out with friends? Every now and then, I read interviews and it seems like going to the movies, playing sports and doing fun stuff other than SC is pretty common, most of the times even mandatory depending on what team you play on.
Girlfriends? Well, some will have gf's, some won't. Like in.... life itself. Even TL.net. I wonder how many of the haters here have gf's. The fact that some guys here make such a big deal of having a gf, like having one makes you finally a winner, makes me wonder. Personally, having a gf has never made me feel cooler than others, not a life-winner or a life-loser. Just happy. I don't go judging others because they have no gf. Guys like Bisu, Nada, Boxer, Savior and such can snap their fingers and be sure that girls will pop out. Guys like TheZerg or Bug-Terran, well, chances are girls will not fall to their feet.
Future? Well, the biggest stars are earning loads of money, and for sure they have a future somewhere linked to the growing eSport industry. The guys who suck and won't get anywhere in SC? Well, it's not like they quit their education(see Flash). And there is life after SC. They can keep studying, and if they are determined and smart, they will make it. Just like in every other thing in life. Especially with the Korean corporation entry level tests, what you have studied doesn't limit you that much.
Oh and let me remind you, you are in a SC forum. You follow the careers of these no-life losers. Lol, you even cheer for them and curse when they lose. So, whatever. And when you mock progaming-nerds, well, just let me remind you these site is supported by a very dedicated staff that invests quite a few hours to make TL.net possible. So indirectly, you are disrespecting their efforts too.

On December 30 2008 04:58 AloneInDaBunker wrote: yea the reason there are so many 'lol' or 'keke" is because the interview has been done online. "ㅎㅎ" is more like smily expression than "lol". When asked their fav girl type, Koreans usually refer to attractive female singers or actresses. And only way progamers can learn about them out of their 12 hr training per day, is through checking photos& interviews of them on internet. This is why Flash said he can't answer because he hasn't been on the net checking them out. hope this answers some of your complains. gj mrhoon for translating.
Great post, you just made every Flash hater in this thread look like a total idiot :D.
Because how would anybody of you call a person who: 1) read an interview translated by nonprofessional translator 2) has apparently no idea about cultural and social background in Korea except that they play Stacraft there a lot 3) and then picks some small stuff from that interview and spit insults on the interviewed person?
That really requires a lot of hate or some brain issues. Preferably both.
Anyway, great interview, Thanks MrHoon! But I don't think Flash is so overconfident or arrogant like some of you imply. It seems to me that he is half-joking the whole time (the "lol", or should I say "smilies" for the slower among us). The answer about rivalry shows it best, he is easily able to make fun of himself, which is not a trait of an arrogant person.
And seriously - I think AloneInDaBunker's post should be included in the OP post, it clears a lot of things up.

seriously.. how could you hate this guy? This young and he pwns it up with such confidence. I can definitely see him becoming a bonjwa or something greater.

thank you for translating, good interview
i'm not sure if the translation played a role or not, but flash seemed refreshingly confident and loose, compared to most progamer interviews.
he also sounds younger than he looks, he seems really sensitive to negative fan feedback lol.
i like flash more after reading this
Edit: ugh, i don't want to be a scout

wow I didn't know Flash was such a baller! when i watch games with him I usually route for the other player, because flash seems to me like a menacing villain by the way he plays...but hes just a kid! and a damn successful one too...

The people saying high school are supposed to be the best years of your life are probably still in high school. Or just bitter. Or both.

This isn't meant to be a hit towards Flash, but it seems arrogant to me. Then again, many progamers are arrogant, which is probably how they maintain their mental strength when playing big games.

it's what i thought. but Jaedong seems the same way. he feels he's the best zerg there is, and he is.
bisu is arrogant, and he's one of the best.
all players should have confidence i think; seems normal.

arrogant 1. making claims or pretensions to superior importance or rights; overbearingly assuming; insolently proud
he said when he wins more titles, he will surpass the bonjwa level and be called something greater
yes maybe that's a bit high goals, but he even said "i have to win more titles" and "i'm not the bonjwa right now". i'd say that's a pretty realistic assessment and isn't "overly proud", especially considering he's the #1 terran right now and holds an OSL title. arrogance is when the person misjudges his own ability / importance, and i think flash is pretty accurate in his self-assessment.

god the flash haters make me rage
This kid is intelligent and very skilled. There's a reason Flash has always been my favorite player and remains so. There's a reason boxer said he'll succeed.
Another thing is that Flash has the balls to be a disliked player in his playstyle. First the Cheese Terran and now the "boring" Macro Terran. But he plays to win and doesn't give a flying fuck whether you think that his style boring or gay. And I greatly respect that.
Also: on the subject of arrogance: If you look at top players of very many competitive activities, most of them are arrogant. To play a game with the intent of "I want to be better than everyone else" requires at least a small degree of arrogance of "I am/can be better than everyone else". A lot of times they're also driven by this self-view of "i'm better, why can't I beat them easily, then?" so they practice a lot. This isn't just true of starcraft.
