Testosis is nowhere near them.
Thanks Cruiser and team!
What's next? End of world hunger? You are too good to be real!
If this mean Tastosis definitely wont cast ASL even thru VODs im disappointed! But Scan and Nyoken are next best thing after them so better this then Korean cast! Just lets hope we could watch on Afreeca cause its lag and not working for most of us!

I had issues on afreeca for a while and realized these were two solutions that seemed to work for me. Close the chat + do not use google translate.
This is amazing news, though I'm a bit confused - Arty said on his stream last night (this morning in KR) that they are potentially close to announcing something in terms of coverage - is it possible that we get Nyoken/Scan as live casters and Tastosis on VODs? Either way cannot wait for this <3
This is awesome news. Thank you very much for your efforts and mad respect for Nyoken in particular since he's involved with the BSL too, in very uncomfortable hours, even though there won't be much overlap (just the first week of the ASL, I think?) this is some serious effort. I hope the afreeca platform is at least partially usable by the foreign community - some people have serious issues with buffering/lag, for me it's hit-and-miss, but it surely beats no cast at all.
One of the worst part about independent casts is the lack of translating Korean so we know what’s going on outside of the actual game. Having Scan will really help keep the glue between matches. Good luck guys!
Since many of you have probably not heard Scan's commentary before, I wanted to add that I had the pleasure of casting with Scan a few years ago for a noob league educational cast. He was extremely knowledgeable about the game, pleasant, accommodating, and his English is very good. This is a real treat! I expect he will drop some knowledge bombs that even some of the most diehard fans have no idea about

There was definitely a lack of expertise. The nyoken + scan duo is some next-level shit! SO EXCITED !
Great news indeed! Personally I think this will be much better than the tastosis cast - although I suspect some (especially the sc2 crowds) may think otherwise. Just hope that we won't be let down by the platform (afreeca) itself.

The only comparable partnerships would have to be Korean ASL/KeSPA former progamers and top amateurs/b+c-teamers IMO (TheMarine, Nal_rA, etc.)
Looking forward to this, many thanks to all involved!
I can only imagine a TvT casted by Nyoken + Scan (or any other non PvP/ZvZ mirror match), that might be the highest quality english cast (knowledge wise) ever recorded.

Scan can cast ZvZ or ZvP enough because Zerg is a sub race.

On top of that his knowledge of the other races is really strong relative to most foreign casters IMO
I think all things considered, this is taking me back 12 years ago to the days of unofficial commentaries with Cholera/Klazart/Diggity/Moletrap. Which was a good time.

Scan protoss and zerg reached A- on iccup when it was hard to make such ranks. His offraces are better than most of foreigner players main races.
Nyoken seems like a really good caster from what I have seen from him. Seems to do a professional job casting and looks sharp. Scan also has potential if he grew out of his younger self with the huge ego he used to have.

While some pride is in order for qualifying for ASL, I can confidently say that Scan has grown out of whatever image you may have of him from yesteryears gone by. He did a free cast for noobs, going over his high level reps and teaching the Terran MUs, with a noob caster like myself a few years ago - a person with inflated ego would not do that, I think.
Fantastic news, shame no Tastetosis but I imagine they're quite expensive for how many viewers ASL English gets, so understandable. They shall be missed though
I think Nyoken came to Korea just more than a year ago with the dream of becoming a caster for ASL. Kind of feel bad for him that they cancelled the English cast. But somehow one opportunity closing leads to another. Now he's an ASL caster. How cool is that.
And for anyone who's still feeling disappointed with no Tastosis, remember that this may not be the end. Things can change, decisions can be reverted. There will be ASL 12. Who knows if a solution will come up and your favorite duo will return.

Scan has been doing some casting too lately and has the deep game knowledge that will make up for any other inadequacies as they relate to being inexperienced with announcing games.

Fair enough.
But my point is Nyoken is a very good caster, he's put in a lot of hours casting both foreigners and Korean pros in the Remastered era.

Yea, I didn't really get where DooMeR was going with this but I decided to just take it at face value as something they could do instead of looking at it as potentially insulting them for lack of experience. Maybe he meant they could have an opportunity to work on their synergy and also bang out some games for English viewers' enjoyment? Who knows But it's absolutely true that neither caster is inexperienced.

100% behind this.
They might not have the... cohesion... Tastosis have as a duo, but they're definitely more than capable and honestly any overly critical comparisons would be a disservice for both duos. Tastosis put a lot of time and effort and brought us a ton of content (and everyone was free to choose whether to watch them or not), including online qualifiers for some seasons - and those were real marathons. Nyoken and Scan rose to the occasion really quickly when things went south, with the immense support of people like Cruiser who organize stuff. This is a real testament to the resiliency of the scene and that it may be somewhat small and niche compared to other esports, but it's very much alive and kicking. Makes me feel really good.

Most of the videos recently uploaded to StarCastTV were cast by Scan. His cast is getting better and better. I'm sure Nyoken and Scan will do a good cast.
hi cruiser. thanks for this awesome news. glad to see nyoken and scan casting. very knowledgable casters. i got used to nyoken alot. may be you should consider Gypsy (if he is available) to co-cast with Nyoken when Scan has his games instead of a solo cast.

Not replying to you specifically but the chain. What i was getting at is. I am not sure they've casted together at all. They are both more of the analysis type casters and so both doing that is going to require some getting used to for both of them. Either one or both would have to pick up the mantle of following the action and keeping the pace of the game. The reason i said the qualifiers is I am not sure what content is allowed to be casted over and what isn't. So I figured if ASL has given them permission to cast over their broadcast live. Then that must mean all the ASL qualifiers are fair game so they have loads of content to get ready for it together.
EDIT: actually as I typed that out. I realized nyoken is actually a bit of both Analysis + play by play. Still working together and keeping the pace of the game while both trying to get their points across when things pop up is going to take practice. As well as practicing letting points go when the time has past and too much stuff is going on for it to be relevant anymore to the cast without feeling out of place or taking the attention away from the match. In my perfect starcraft world it would be all analysis ^_^ but for keeping the attention on the players and the pace of the game its probably not ideal.

I'm with you! I would prefer knowledge bomb after knowledge bomb, debates and agreements between two very well-informed high level players, and full on analysis. The game is so interesting and there are so many small things that even 20 year veteran players might not know, particularly some of the "hidden" knowledge from the Korean scene. So much history! So many nuanced situations!
But, I also submit, much as you did, that most casual viewers and hypbeasts would prefer a color commentator somewhere in the mix. I think Nyoken can definitely do it but I wouldn't want to shoehorn him into that role either. I think that regardless of what the synergy is like, a lot of people will get a lot from these casts - and as always, you can't please everyone. The "Tastosis-only" crowd are doing themselves a disservice if they don't tune in
This is great news imo. Both are pretty knowledgeable and this should fit the bill for those who were really looking forward to an english cast. I will be tuning in so good luck guys and thanks for this initiative.

I can't imagine they'll be permitted to repost to their own YT channel (rather, doing live ASL casting is a way for them to broadcast their YT work to a wider audience), so perhaps the best we can do is to post the main VOD link and provide timestamps in spoiler tags?
Nyoken is a baller. He is a gift to the BW community, and it feels a little unjust that tasteless/artosis are getting 10k euros to cast vods, when this man has been killing it in the BW scene with commentary for the past 2 years for BSL, now stepping in once again, casting both ASL and BSL on the same day with about 8 hours in between (And he's in the korean timezone!!)
Awesome cast today! Scan's analysis and predictions are on another level (obviously) and Nyoken is great at commentating. It was nice to hear the high level commentary from both. Thank you and keep it up!
Thank you for the support! Also Cruiser should get a lot of praise. He does a lot for his channel StarcastTV and has been in contact with Afreeca often. Without him a lot of the opportunities I've been given wouldn't possible

No please dont try to be someone you’re not. Just be yourself and cast like you do, is my personal feedback. I understand if someone feels different though.
I really enjoyed it, thx a lot for your contributions to the sc community Lets donate money to starcast as well so we can keep this thing alive
Energy levels were fine as is, and the Q/A dynamic and will only get smoother as they get in more reps together. Also frankly from a product perspective it is always better to be different but high quality and cultivate your own customer base who cares about those attributes, than to mimic a market leader’s qualities.
Even professional major TV production analysts regularly have the “non answer / didn’t hear the question” interchange happen in a regular basis, especially if some higher priority action is happening.
Excited to see where your endeavors take you guys :D

Nyoken deserves so much praise <3
I love Nyoken, but let's not act like its unfair that Tastosis have reaped the rewards of their long career and hard work.
I think a more positive way, that i'd put it is: wow if tastosis can raise that much money lets see if we can do the same for nyoken.
It's great that they're casting and I love the fact that they share their knowledge of the game. It gives great insight and new perspectives to see the game.
I think it's actually a plus for the community if there's a more "into the game"-kind of cast besides Tastosis (which is more entertaining and of course also really great).

Very cool you guys do this and great job so far
Keep it up!
I agree with the first point, I think it would be great if Scan could share his views on Nyoken's questions or build the conversation, because he's making interesting points and leading the cast very well. Would love to hear more what Scan is thinking.
I don't agree with the second point, because Nyoken actually does get excited sometimes and I think they should just be themselves. Anything emotionally forced would be really annoying.
What I think a lot of casters could do less is stating the obvious - like "the dragoons are attacking the tanks" or 5x in a row "yea it's gg now" "it's probably over" "he's dead". Everybody can see that. Talk more about the things you can't see!
Guys, the cast was perfect as is! I really loved it! Thank you so much! Nyoken gets excited and it's perfect, he is such an amazing caster, and Scan has amazing knowledge! Awesome duo, hope to have much more of their casting
The first cast was really great! I hope they just continue like that. I Really like nyoken & scan casting the games. Only the gamesound could be a little louder.
Thanks for the cast Nyokena and Scan. I would love to hear more game analysis from Scan. A bit odd that he does more running commentary and Nyoken seems to be doing the analysis. Reverse of what I expected. A pleasure to hear the near instant interview translations. Keep up the good work.

yes I agree that's the only issue I can think of. I loved the cast and the level of knowledge they have about the game!
Agree, the cast is awesome and they already increased the sound a bit in comparison to the first cast, but its still not enough.
Ideally the sound setup should be the same as in the discontinued official asl cast - casters should clearly be audible, but the unit sounds and the music should be audible as well.
So please up the volume of the game sounds even more, the rest of the cast is superb. great games and great casting, thank you a lot for giving us access to a english live cast, you really saved ASL for me
I enjoyed today’s cast. TvT is a matchup where I’m lost and having Scan tell me about Royal’s preferred style and how he would try to capitalize upon it made the cast much more enjoyable. Nyoken is also doing a great job transitioning to the play by play caster rather than the expert analyst and is showing a lot of range as a caster.

looking forward to the next one - "The Yamato from Downtown!"
I'll join the choir, the cast is great. There are small bits that could be improved, mostly about the audio as mentioned above, but I feel like I would be irritating if I repeat what others have already said 😁. And completely agree with KwarK, Nyoken is definitely showing a lot of range. Even if they keep everything exactly the same, it would still be enjoyable, but I'm pretty sure they'll find the right balance between analysis and play-by-play and fine-tune their dynamic as a duo along the way.

There's only about 200 people watching the Starcast stream on average so I'm guessing the rest that would watch on youtube (minus 1-2K probably) will jump on the VODs when Artosis posts them.

The starcast ASL YouTube uploads are getting 4000+ views last I checked. That being said I don’t think any of the numbers really matter since I expect many of the backers of the Patreons want the Nick and Dan’s product specifically which is a great thing.
Tastosis releasing weeks old Vods of their cast doesn't do it for any fans who want to stay on top, not get spoiled, etc. It's a shame they need 10k to do what used to be their big passion...

They dont "need" 10k to do that. They already said they'd do it anyway. 10k is just the number their fans want to give them. Plus, it's not just for this ASL only.
That said, it's better if they can clarify the reason for such a big delay. If it's because of an agreement with Afreeca then fair enough. But if it's just because they feel like it, I guess a lot of people will rethink about donation, or reduce the amount next time.

It’s their job. Whether it’s still their passion or not, they deserve to get paid.
That’s what I was about to write as well — they are pursuing their careers, not simply their passions. If it were just “passion” then they are able to do a similar stream as Nyoman/Scan, but each of them are at different stages in their respective careers.

There's a portion of the audience that specifically want to watch Tatosis casts even if they're spoiled on the results. Then there's others that like Tatosis but are primarily excited about the tournament itself, and will watch the games via the Korean or Scan/Nyoken cast instead of waiting for weeks.
I don't know if Afreeca isn't providing replays until Ro. 24 is over, but this seems like an unnecessary way to fragment your viewership.

if they paid 10k for it it means they love their product so much that they are going to watch regardless of results anyway. the latter ones u mention are most likely the minority.
yes its a shame that tastosis are not streaming it live, but having more caster choices is always welcome so the negative perception of fragmenting is unnecessary.

Agree 100%!
I will watch live games with Scan and Nyoken and still watch Tastosis too, even if I know the results.
I follow the results closely to stay on top of the LB haha

no offense at all to Scan but I truly hope he makes it as fas as possible.. because for me personally gyp and nyoken are basically the best foreign casters together only rivaled by tastosis imho
that being said I doubt Scan makes it out of his group. tough group.. very tough

Scan vs Ssak is pretty amazing. Even if Scan loses his display was very, very impressive.
I asked in chat if the sounds were fine and everyone said yes so I guess next time I will try to boost them. I don't control the game sounds, so I would have to boost specifically when the game starts.

Sound was fine today imo. I think its just personal preference.

I think we’d get more out of the cast if you made more game sounds with your mouth, especially during long TvTs. After five base versus five base, actual words should be banned.
I haven't had a chance to watch the latest cast but enjoyed the first two casts quite a bit. I think if you guys added a camera overlay then it'll make the cast seem even more personable since it won't be voices over a stream lol, but if not, it's great as is. Well done so far.

English cast is a tortune. It crashes every 30 seconds. Instead supporting Afreeca and the english cast, better Afreeca support us by upgrading their servers.
Afreeca cancels english cast, because of low viewers. You don't say, Sherlok. What a surprise nobody watched, when your streams are unwatchable.

I realise this guy is banned, but I want to explain this again. The reason they won't upgrade their servers is a) it costs a LOT of money to host servers and b) there's no viewership there to make spending that kind of money worth it. It's a double edged sword because without viewers they won't upgrade their servers but without servers they won't get viewers.
Twitch had EXACTLY the same issue in Europe. Twitch was unwatchable for me for the longest time, but because they basically had 0 competition all the people watched there anyway as they had no choice. They then locked all the bigger streamers into contracts forbidding them from ever streaming anywhere else and that's how twitch was able to justify buying the server infrastructure and expanding, people didn't really have any other choice.

Today's cast was again unwatchable. These crashes and buffering are really bad. Is there any particular reason why Scan's cast is so difficult to watch, but the main stream is kinda ok? I mean they are both on Afreeca, why is the difference? Or maybe just bad timing?

On the one hand it sucks. On the other hand, that’s how it always used to be and we just had to deal with it. If you told me in the early days of bw that I’d be able to watch OSL live with an OSL player telling me what was going on in English but it crashed from time to time I’d be overjoyed.

Since both streams are on Afreeca, the problem can't be Afreeca. Do we know where Scan & Nyoken are hosting the stream? They have to stream from another place than the korean casters, that's the only possible solution I guess? And these two places can have different ISP etc.

Few things I would like to explain here.
I streamed last night for 13 hours straight and I did not lose any connection. I stream on Twitch + Afreeca at the same time using restream.io. My OBS setting is exactly the same for both ASL English stream account and my personal stream account. It's not 100% true, but so far I'm getting to the point to here. Whenever I'm receiving cleanfeed from Afreeca causes lost connection for 10 seconds at random time. Whenever i'm not receiving cleanfeed from Afreeca, my Internet is 100% fine. Also, when I was doing Foreign All-Star vs Korean Pro casts, I did not lose connection at all.
I'm going to test out few stuff in the future while we got 5 more days before ASL Ro16 Group Nomination.

It sounds like a congestion issue on Afreeca's side, there's just too many people watching ASL. Isn't ASL shown on TV there? Ideally you would use a capture card to get the feed from TV instead of an internet stream. Either that or use some larger buffer (maybe you can open the stream in VLC and tweak buffer settings).

they get a clean feed by afreeca for the english cast. no korean casters talking in the background. i think thats way more ideal than casting over the korean voices in the background which would be the case if the would do it any other way.

Those OGN stream links that people would extract from the site would crash for 30 minutes at a time, and we'd fall back on reading live report posts until we established connection again through F5ing -- good times haha.
Enjoyed the cast for Group B! Will be tuning in for more!
Love how Scan and Nyoken gave great in-depth insights (e.g. correctly anticipating Soma going hydra rather than muta due to the map / meta / Best's build).

Yeah I've been highly impressed. These guys are growing on me. Not having Tastosis is a shame, but Scan + Nyoken are a quality pairing. I'm not particularly good at the game, but I come away from almost every cast feeling like I learning something new.
I also really like Scan's slightly different way of stating things that I think comes with not being a native English speaker. There's something fun about the idea of lurkers "scratching" Protoss or Terran units that makes me smile every time

It was nice to see how much the duo’s chemistry and comfort level improved over the season, even though they were dual casting remotely and not in studio together.
Looking forward to tuning into you guys next season.
Thank you all for the support during ASL. Even though terrans bombed out a lot of the games were exciting. I know a lot of people complained about the volume between me and Scan, but I didn't even change settings between casts so I have no idea how some days it was bad (on youtube) and somedays it was fine. I appreciate the opportunity to cast ASL and look forward to casting again, if possible. Even if I don't get to cast again I am thankful. Also, Cruiser coordinated all this with Afreeca so big thanks to him.
Huge shout-out to Scan/Nyoken. The progress they made as a duo as the season went on was really significant. I'm not bashing on them or anything, quite the opposite - but at the beginning there were a few hiccups(mostly related to sound quality and mixing), almost every complaint I read was polite and constructive and they fixed what they had to fix. It must be a really tough job on Scan in particular, casting in another language with an unfamiliar partner, building up the chemistry along the way - but it was great.

Thanks for an awesome season, guys!
Scan’s improvement from ro24 to ro8 was tremendous. Also I found it funny/endearing that he picked up a lot of Nyoken’s verbal ticks / casting vocabulary
