Just wrote a letter to Afreeca and encourage you to do so as well. But please stop effing koreans, it's stupid and it won't help. In the meantime, let's listen to Dan and Nick since they are the only ones who know the ins and outs of the situation and see what options do we have.

I understand in their current format it's not worth it to them, they're a business. But most good business adjust their business model before abandoning something completely. Very sad times. As someone who has followed brood war before you could even watch vods ( live report only), Tastosis were my favorites of all time. They will be missed. Perhaps if we did our own crowd funding and showed them it would be the real concrete proof of concept needed to get the result we all want?

It' just such a waste and if they had more open minded thinking it wouldn't need to happen. They simply needed to put a small fee for foreign viewers and I can say personally id be more than happen to pay it. Why are we all talks no action? either Tastosis or community leaders like Zero/Rusbrain/many other organisers I have missed need to step up and start the Fundraising effort. If we truly love BW like we say we do, action.

the saddest thing about this is that this move will kill BW for a lot of people since ASL was the only BW league they enjoyed

If we cannot restream on the major western platforms, then this isn't just loss, this is a serious wound. There is money and some clout on the side of "bw for all". We have on our side visibility, access to very influential koreans. ASL should be fine letting other people make money, if they are actively refusing to do so. There are ways to get around restreaming bans, depending on platform and country, but it is way less then ideal. I want someone to type bw in youtube, click live and be able to join in. GRRR What's the move?

They've both been doing pretty well with their streams and in their own private content creation, so if they teamed up and put on some events and crowdfunded them... I'd support that. 100%. The best path forward for keeping BW alive in the future is stuff like this, anyway, and they're in a great position to build it. BSL, STPL, and others have been fantastic, so something that Tastosis ran would be, too. On a side note, I'll still continue to watch ASL when reasonable. I do have a harder time enjoying VODs with Korean casting, but I can't miss my pro Korean SC, even if it's not going to be as regular and easily accessible as it used to be. I wrote them a polite email asking for them to reconsider, but I'm not going to hate. I just hope that something positive comes out of all of this.

If we truly love BW like we say we do, action. I don't think it's on them. They've done enough. I'm sure they would all support it such an effort completely, especially when it comes to publicity. Sadly I have no skills in organizing such things, but I know someone does. If I did it no one would pay attention. But surely someone could. So I completely agree with you there of course. We could take action and convince them otherwise. There is no doubt about that. The exact way to do that is a lot more complicated. I promise my funds to any such a cause as long as it was legit. With all that said, I would say someone like Rus_brain who has a history of being reliable at utilizing crowd sourced funds would be a huge asset.

GRRR What's the move? I think the best move is to show that the foreign community is interested in investing in our own slice of korean brood war. Restreaming is fine and all, I not saying there's anything wrong with that. But a strong community funded effort, specifically directed for raising funds for the most notable English streamers will lift up the rest of the community. It will show the Korean decision makers there really is a reason to give a shit. It will possibly change their mindsets. While lack of views and a flat out rejection from foreign viewers will close whatever doors we may have had forever. If we reject their business model entirely it will only reinforce their close minded views. We need to reach a common ground and show them that there is a real interest and a possible real investment from non Koreans. Restreams are a workaround but they will not provide a solid BOOM in your face reality that will cause Korean business to pay attention.

We can (and SHOULD) look at this situation as a possible great oppurtunity to make (foreign) Starcraft bigger. 1. Persuade afreeca to let "us" (foreigners, most likely Artosis+Tasteless with the appropiate "others") cast ASL. in exchange for money of course. (not on afreeca!) 2. Set a crowdfunding goal with this amount of money, and reach it. 3. Start casting 4. Expand and gather sponsors, make the show bigger, get someone like redbull and we will reach more viewers than in Korea. (starcraft has the potential for that) I know there are a lot of "ifs" here (and a lot of work to be done), but I truly believe this can be achieved. (need to be very careful with the contract with afreeca because if the english restream will be big/bigger we can't let them take it away from us, of course if that happens we could create our own tournament probably at that time from sponsors+crowdfunding would be enough) Unfortunately I can only help with my part of the crowdfunding. I'm very excited what our community can do with this situation!

I could totally see a world where, if any of these other ideas don't pan out (crowdfunding for more English ASL/them selling English casting rights/etc) that people are suggesting, Tastosis could seriously just run their own StarCraft BW league on Twitch and cast it. Another foreign event would be awesome under the might of the casting archon. Hell, it doesn't even have to be the highest tier of skill to be entertaining - I absolutely loved the day9 funday monday goofy stuff from back in the day. But high skilled would be great, too. (Hell, they both live in Korea - maybe they could organize more Korean player events?) While I support your call for more foreign brood war content, the fact is the ASL is the absolute best of the best in world every year. To lose our voice from such an event is really sad. That's what we need to fight for. It's not about just making seperate content from the korean scene, its about linking the two together. Lets face it , brood war is a niche market, but its a niche market with extremely passionate fans who are older now, and have resources. We could get it done.
