Bisu will always be remembered best for that one magical evening ten years ago when he took down Ma "sAviOr" Jae-yoon against all odds: the 3.3 Revolution, the least expected and most significant upset in Brood War history. It is still celebrated in the Korean esports community every year on the third of March. Its context has been chronicled to exhaustion, deservedly so. And as long as StarCraft esports exists, it will live on as folktale, even if the characters fade into Homeric caricatures over time.

Yet looking back on what came after, one cannot help but wonder if his early claim to timeless glory ultimately held him back from achieving all he could have. And that sounds patently ridiculous because Bisu is undoubtedly the greatest Protoss to have played the game; what more could you want from a player who won 3 MSLs, 5 Proleague titles, 3 Proleague MVPs, and was always considered the crown jewel of SK Telecom T1's golden armada? But despite all that, it's undeniable that he had the talent to win so much more, fly so much higher. Anyone with the faintest understanding of the professional game could see it, and was pained by it, until the end.

Feel proud to have watched this live (stream).
Savior was unstoppable at the time, his opponents seemed doomed from the start, it always felt inevitable that he would win. Bisu <3!

One fascinating topic this article addressed for me personally was the issue of identity, and how quickly the community found one for Bisu. Something people would associate with him for the rest of his life.

Almost all great players went through several different monikers before settling on a definitive nickname.

BoxeR: There was once a time when he was known as the "Fantasy Terran" for his imaginative play-style before finally settling on title of "Emperor of Terran" after he won his second consecutive Ongamenet title.

NaDa: Although NaDa is most well known for being the "Genius Terran" nowadays, he also went by other monikers such as "The Machine" and "Tornado Terran". NaDa famously hated being likened to a lifeless machine, and fought hard to break that particular perception of him.

iloveoov: iloveoov went by various tags including the "Monster Terran" and "Cheater Terran", the former being used more often in Korean communities, and the latter being used more often in foreign communities.

sAviOr: Before being known as "The Maestro", sAviOr was initially called the "Genius Zerg" when he defeated Reach for his initial MSL trophy. sAviOr pushed for another nickname since he didn't want to be known as just another zerg version of NaDa.

Jaedong: Jaedong was initially known as the "Legend Killer", as well as being called "God of Destruction" for brief period of time after he won his first Ongamenet title. His fans eventually settled on calling him "The Tyrant".

Flash: Flash also went by various nicknames during the initial stage of his career, the most famous of which was the "Ultimate Weapon" after a FOMOS columnist named him as such in early 2008. After his picture perfect 2010 season, Flash would more often be called "God Young Ho", or simply "God".

NaDa had to actively fight for the title of the "Genius Terran". sAviOr had to campaign for his title of "The Maestro" instead of being branded as the zerg version of NaDa. Jaedong had to break out of his initial shell as the "Legend Killer", a rookie who would take down legends greater than himself. Flash had a pretty intimidating nickname in the "Ultimate Weapon", but nothing beats being called a "God", and he had to earn that particular title with an unthinkable performance in 2010.

Bisu, apart from the memes created around various aspects of his career, went by one serious nickname only throughout his entire career. Bisu was dearly loved for it. Everything he did had more value because he was the chosen one that brought the end of the tyrannical reign of sAviOr. He was the darling of the entire industry. Perhaps the intensity with which entire narrative to make a hero out of Bisu was driven by the fans and even the people in the industry sapped away at the necessary drive and hunger needed for the full evolution of Bisu as a competitor.

Even the most talented and dedicated players can suffer from too much adulation and sycophancy, and as the darling of nearly everyone who was there to witness the amazing debut finals he had versus sAviOr at the peak of his powers, it felt to me as if Bisu lacked the intensity or mental resilience to sustain supremely high level of results he seemed to be capable of getting. His best ever ProLeague seasons were always preceded by really bad ProLeague seasons. He would show moments of brilliance to remind legions of zealous followers of his fantastic capabilities, but seemed to lack the raw drive to fully break out of his shell to unlock that next level that would have brought him even more praise and distinction as a professional player.

It wasn't such a problem in the streaming era when these Brood War players were entertainers on top of being competitors, but during the professional era of Brood War it was infuriating at times to see Bisu transcend the match-up of protoss-versus-zerg more so than any non-mirror match-up abilities of any player in history, but fall flat on his face versus really mediocre opposition to drop out early in tournaments time and time again. Screw reaching the finals, he failed to reach the quarter-finals for three consecutive years. I knew he was better than that. Bisu knew he was better than that. New blood protoss players such as Grape, Stats, Mini, SnOw, and Movie were reaching the round of eight. Stork, a player one year his senior was still doing that multiple times within that time-frame.

Probably the greatest protoss player of all-time in terms of professional results, but while I do believe that he was one of the hardest grinders in terms of sheer practice hours, I don't think he always competed with a do-or-die mindset. ZerO never seemed to have that mindset either. Bisu's games, for me at least, always had that element of being a performance rather than a fight for survival. The gut-wrenching fight for the right to be called the absolute best. Bisu would get out there to perform, and if he could perform well, he would win, and if he didn't, he would simply malfunction, rather than hanging in there through sheer grit and will power.

Maybe Bisu had the mentality of a performance artist. He would streamline his freakish mechanics to perfection just like an artist would at keeping up with his technique for the instrument of his choice. Bisu even said on stream that his most intense practice regimen took place just before his match versus sAviOr, as if he instinctively knew this would be the series that would define his career for years to come. I wonder if somewhere down the road that desperation to succeed was replaced by a sense of duty and a need to perform.

That is a spot on summary of how I perceive Bisu too Letmelose. Ironically, I think there seems to be a lack of killer instinct amongst all protoss in general during the Bisu era.

There were a lot of factors involved, but the circumstances involving Bisu weren't ideal for harvesting greater ambitions.

Other blockbuster transfers resulting in enormous salaries tended to wreck player motivations in general.

1) YellOw transfers to KTF MagicNs. He gets the biggest deal of his career in early 2004 after reaching the finals of a major individual league at least once for three consecutive years (2001, 2002, and 2003). He never reaches the finals ever again.

2) Nal_rA transfers to KTF MagicNs. He gets the biggest deal of his career in early 2004 after reaching three finals and winning two major individual leagues. He proceeds to drop out of both individual leagues, and never wins another title ever again.

3) GoRush transfers to SK Telecom T1. He gets the biggest deal of his career in early 2005 after winning his only major individual league title. He never reaches the finals ever again.

Bisu was a good looking guy with thousands of fan girls, who already had a couple of titles under his belt, already had his legacy secured, and was one of the best paid players in the scene now that he was on SK Telecom T1. It would have required superhuman levels of single mindedness for Bisu to not lose focus in early 2008.

I actually thought Bisu would totally fade into obscurity with time after his rapid decline in form in early 2008, but he proved me wrong and won Clubday MSL 2008, GomTV Classic Season 2 in succession, as well as winning the MVP for the regular season of the ProLeague as he carried SK Telecom T1 to their first ever ProLeague championship in more than four years. I believe Bisu said that part of the reason for his resurgence was because his huge salary got cut for his initial poor performances in early 2008.

Bisu after he transferred over to SK Telecom T1, in my opinion, became rather predictable:

1) Huge salary
2) Bad ProLeague season -> Salary gets reduced
3) Resurgence in form in the ProLeague
4) Huge salary
5) Repeat

Sometimes I wonder what might have happened if MBC Game HERO was well funded enough to keep Bisu on their roster. SK Telecom T1 did improve Bisu vastly as a gamer (Sea said on stream that Bisu got much better as a gamer after his transfer), but I personally believe that he seemed to be more in command of his own destiny back when he was at MBC Game HERO.
