Esports is free marketing for any developers game. I personally would have never bought countless games if it wasn't for their competitive scenes. And yet they expect 3rd parties to pay them this much to run tournaments? Even if it's a yearly sum, even if it includes some benefits or if the actual sum is lower, this is still unbelievable. Why would you charge people to advertise your game? No one in esports (outside of these ridiculously large prize pools on dev run events) is getting rich. Most are just happy to be able to pay the bills while working in esports (caster, player, event org etc.). And yet instead of being happy that there are so many people so passionate about their game, willing to dedicate their lifes to the game, they try to cash in instead of helping out. Imo blizz should be paying orgs to run tourneys, not the other way around. I almost wish eSports would shrink again, because honestly I'd rather have no dev support than all of them trying to cash in on eSports.

I can't say I have been pleased with Blizz recently when it comes to esports stuff. They are willing to subsidize games with worse viewership it seems.

I think the difference here is that riot and valve have actually contributed or at least been involved with the esports scenes of their games. Blizzard never had to do anything with BW esports.

They should get Artosis to do the SCV voice over, Tasteless to do the firebat, Day9 to do siege tank, and so on.

1) So many details are unknown or unconfirmed. 2) I have no idea of what I'm talking about when it comes to negotiating this type of fee and I'm sure that most people here don't either. 3) The ASL is happening, right? That means Afreeca is willing to pay this and thinks they will still make enough of a profit. If this news came out after we had heard of the ASL's cancellation then of course we should all be screaming towards the heavens, but we're still getting the tournament. That said, I know Blizzard has done wrong by this community in the past and I'm not saying we should forget that.

In worth nothing that every major game company requires tournament licenses, regardless if theres a fee or not (Valve, Blizzard, Riot)

also I still can't believe buying team spots exists in esports. Really ruins the magic of me being a fan of a team.

I highly doubt Blizzard will just state how much they are taking so the information we have atm might be the best we got. I do hope the 88k is exaggerated but I don't personally believe that Blizzard is all that concerned for the BW scene considering past conduct.

Im not sure you got your data correct, this is not for any tournament of dota2 that you want to host, I believe this rule was done when you are creating the ticket of the tournament, when this ticket is selling at a fixed price lets say $5, the revenue from that is being payed to the host of the tournament. This ticket is being sold in Valve / Steam has a ingame purchase, they use Valve infrastructure to sell and advertise and they also use Valve infrastructure to keep track of games, reps, obs mode, etc. That does not means that if the tournament is receiving 100k from sponsors, they need to pay 75% of that revenue to Valve.
