How can people honestly defend this. And yes riot and valve are also to blame here, doesn't mean blizzard behaviour is any less shitty.
Esports is free marketing for any developers game. I personally would have never bought countless games if it wasn't for their competitive scenes. And yet they expect 3rd parties to pay them this much to run tournaments?
Even if it's a yearly sum, even if it includes some benefits or if the actual sum is lower, this is still unbelievable.
Why would you charge people to advertise your game? No one in esports (outside of these ridiculously large prize pools on dev run events) is getting rich. Most are just happy to be able to pay the bills while working in esports (caster, player, event org etc.). And yet instead of being happy that there are so many people so passionate about their game, willing to dedicate their lifes to the game, they try to cash in instead of helping out. Imo blizz should be paying orgs to run tourneys, not the other way around. I almost wish eSports would shrink again, because honestly I'd rather have no dev support than all of them trying to cash in on eSports.

1st I heard Blizz is going to charge PC bangs an hourly fee for offering StarCraft: Remastered to their customers. Now they stealing more money from tourney than anyone else, sounds like 88k is even more than total sum prize or equal. Fuck Blizz that's all I say. Greedy motherfuckers.

I don't know anything about the article source or the type of fee this is so I'm not going to jump straight to outrage. 88k per tournament would be an absurd charge.

I can't say I have been pleased with Blizz recently when it comes to esports stuff. They are willing to subsidize games with worse viewership it seems.

I think the difference here is that riot and valve have actually contributed or at least been involved with the esports scenes of their games. Blizzard never had to do anything with BW esports.

So what about OpenBW? Beyond being a replay viewer, was it intended to become an open source clone of BW? What if tournament organizers just used OpenBW (if it ever completes) and make the claim that they're not hosting Starcraft because they're not using any of their trademarks and assets? Would Blizzard still be able to sue OpenBW?

They should get Artosis to do the SCV voice over, Tasteless to do the firebat, Day9 to do siege tank, and so on.

^ I think there are issues with it even if they aren't using blizzard's assets because they are copying everything otherwise. I'm sure someone with more knowledge can chime in.

Hey guys, you can choose to play another game like League of Legends where team spot fee is $1.8M, or Dota 2 where Valve takes 75% of tournament gross revenue.

If you imply that Valve takes 75% of the compendium sales, it has nothing to do with the "fee" to organize a BW event.

I'm not talking about TI compendium, I'm talking about payment for every single tournament.

14.1 Payment. Within thirty (30) days after the end of the calendar month in which a Tournament is complete, Valve shall pay to Licensee twenty-five percent (25%) of the Adjusted Gross Revenue actually received by Valve for the Tournament.

What about ReactOS? They are copying pretty much everything about Windows except the code and the assets.

I think it's funny how some people are essentially arguing that we are fighting against the tyranny of capitalism here. No one is fighting anything, we're all just worried about a game we love and we're complaining on a forum. I think 88k seems absurdly high and I would never want to see the BW scene hurt from such a stupid fee, but...

1) So many details are unknown or unconfirmed.
2) I have no idea of what I'm talking about when it comes to negotiating this type of fee and I'm sure that most people here don't either.
3) The ASL is happening, right? That means Afreeca is willing to pay this and thinks they will still make enough of a profit.

If this news came out after we had heard of the ASL's cancellation then of course we should all be screaming towards the heavens, but we're still getting the tournament. That said, I know Blizzard has done wrong by this community in the past and I'm not saying we should forget that.

Anyone know what Blizzard's fees for SC2 tournaments are, and when they were put in place?

idk if its true or not, but i remember on /r/starcraft there was rumors the reason why MLG dropped starcraft is because of of tournament license fees, rob simpson said that was untrue: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/pxnz2/lantastic_gaming_incident/c3t399s/

That being said, I'm pretty sure Blizzard pays orgs to host most SC2 events.

In worth nothing that every major game company requires tournament licenses, regardless if theres a fee or not (Valve, Blizzard, Riot)

imo fees should only be in place to ensure high quality of premier tournaments. I don't see a reason for it to be so high.

also I still can't believe buying team spots exists in esports. Really ruins the magic of me being a fan of a team.

What are you hoping for exactly? Blizzard to print you a copy of their contract with Afreeca? Samwise to draw a Terran marine giving you the finger on official Blizzard stationery?

lol. I tend to agree. I highly doubt Blizzard will just state how much they are taking so the information we have atm might be the best we got. I do hope the 88k is exaggerated but I don't personally believe that Blizzard is all that concerned for the BW scene considering past conduct.

Im not sure you got your data correct, this is not for any tournament of dota2 that you want to host, I believe this rule was done when you are creating the ticket of the tournament, when this ticket is selling at a fixed price lets say $5, the revenue from that is being payed to the host of the tournament. This ticket is being sold in Valve / Steam has a ingame purchase, they use Valve infrastructure to sell and advertise and they also use Valve infrastructure to keep track of games, reps, obs mode, etc.

That does not means that if the tournament is receiving 100k from sponsors, they need to pay 75% of that revenue to Valve.
