TL BW writing team still the GOAT for esports. I rarely visit nowadays (sometimes to catch some BW, and recently to read up on BW Remastered), but you guys have kept the quality up at a time when the scene was pretty much dead. Absolutely admirable. And great summary of BW's true savior.

Wait how did he do that? He got the corporate funding from his own company.

I think this piece was a bit too positive on Sonic's legacy and effect on the scene. Didn't some players like intotherainbow get completely fucked over because they invested their family's life savings into his fraud? Not to mention the scene's professional scene shrinking from 2015 and 2016.

Granted, there was still a tremendeous amount of good that came out of his grassroots events, I just felt it should have been more balanced.

The article was mostly positive because it was intended to focus specifically on SSL, basically a celebration for what it stood for and its vital importance to revitalizing the BW scene. It's unfortunate that other people including intotherainbow were hurt by the end results and it's definitely saddening.

Thanks for addressing my criticism. I do still disagree overall, it doesnt seem really fair to give him too much credit when he did bring a lot of negative press and hurt a lot of people through his actions. Maybe thats too far outside the realm of Starcraft but it just means too favorable to him.

Part of me wonders just how much of it was really money mismanagement. His business was doing well from my understanding so SSL was prospering. I think that it was only much later, after SBENU got introduced that things got out of hand. You also have to wonder just how much of the allegations are fully true. If anyone can post a link that give new information about how things are atm, that would be appreciated! In the end, Sonic helped the scene out quite a bit and for that, he is commended. I'm not sure if I can call him a hero or not, that's debatable and I see both sides. From a purely BW perspective though, he is a hero and the kind that BW needed.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/starcraft-2/500441-sonic-sued-for-fraud-update-jan-11?page=9#166 it's not recent but i think this explains stuff OK. Regardless of how well his business was doing at the time, the fact he couldnt get a trademark probably destroyed any possibility of him doing decently.

Ya, I've read this before. I meant one that's recent, as in 2017 to know what happened by then. Good point. What I meant was that I think there wasn't as much money mismanagement until SBENU was introduced.

holy shit damn

i mean, gotta give credit to sonic but man, what a way to blow off your legacy..

SSL's positive impact on BW can hardly be overstated, literally saved the scene.

In pyramid schemes and frauds there are always winners and losers. They need a few people to win in order to seem legit. We're just lucky we were on the winning side of his scheme. Just because we won doesn't mean it was any less of a scheme.

You should remove the spoilers from the game descriptions. Why did you even add them?? Knowing the winner of the game discourages from watching.

The game descriptions for the vods in the recommended vod section were written in the same writing style that is found in the MSL writeup. I liked the way they conveyed the importance of chosen vods so I decided to use a similar approach. Essentially, most games are showcasing a certain aspect of Starcraft (some cheese, some multitasking or certain playstyle, others mind games compared to stellar micro etc...). If the spoiler deters your enjoyment, my advice is to watch the games you are interested in (matchups, players, map etc...) then look at the description afterwards to get the context.

It was thanks to Sonic and his dedication into BW scene that I still continued to watch BW to this day. During SSL early stages, his passion gave me motivation to do translations during live broadcast. Though I grew old and became less involved, I was still very much interested on what went on and randomly watch live streams with others.

I salute you Sonic for your contributions!

Agreed with BigFan on this I was pretty sure BW was a goner without sonic intervention and events that kept the broodwar scene in the minds of everyone. I think the highlights of sonics league is that he managed to get that old msl and ogn tournament going on with his own fundings. It's just sad that his legacy will forever be tarnished by mismanagement of funds and low quality products of SBENU which are being labelled scam products.

Spot on. I have mixed feelings about paying tribute to someone who did it like this. Well, I guess it's really not much different from writing about someone like sAviOr and just focusing on what he achieved.

Super late to the party I am, but I still have to say this was a fantastic read. Currently watching the 25 recommended VODS. Thanks a bajillion TL writing staff!

All good things come to an end, but here's hoping the ASL lasts until the entropic heat death of the universe.

ty for this write up. What sonic did for this game can never be forgotten; he is the most important person to have touched the game in the past 5 years, regardless of how it all ended. The guy will forever be up there with the other legends of BW.

really great read, thanks for writing it bigfan. regardless of what he's done since, it's impossible to understate sonic's importance in bridging the gap between the end of the old pro bw and where we've made it back to today. i'm glad that someone took the time to record it and did it so well.

some of this stuff feels like ancient history now that the ASL is around and watching tbls (and effort :D) play starcraft is somehow a normal fact of life again. it's odd feeling nostalgic for a time that actually post-dates the "end" of the pro scene in korea.

Hi kjwcj!

I feel the same way, paradoxically nostalgic for these times more than for the pre-SC2 era. It was an interesting time in the BW history, to be sure.

Yepp, never forget that Sonic started it all after the proscene was scrapped by Blizzard. He deserves tons of credit for what he did.
