Just to reiterate, with the release of 1.18 in a bit, we'll start working on making things compatible, but it will take us some time. If you'd like to play on ShieldBattery in the meantime, you'll probably want to preserve a copy of 1.16.1 BW before patching (i.e. by making a backup copy of your StarCraft directory).

Tec27, just wanted to say that you have my respect and I greatly admire all the hard work you've put in on this project. I haven't played a lick of Shield Battery, and I haven't looked into it too much, but every time I look into this thread I catch glimpses and signs of a person that is deeply passionate about their project in a meticulous and perfectionist manner accompanied with the sensibility found in most avid BW fans. As a result, you are making a product that is finely in-tune with the desires of the loyal BW playerbase.

Just some words of encouragement for you since I know working on something for so long and not having it's hard work recognized is a terrible feeling. Add me as another person in your fan club.

If, like me, you accidentally patched over your only existing 1.16 install, and can't find a DL link, the iCCup SC getting started page has some working downloads for only the multiplayer client

thank you. when I downloaded the PTR it installed as a separate installation without me doing anything, but when I downloaded this one it was on top of the one I had, so iccup was temporarily out of commission for me. ;p

I dont know maybe i am wrong but last time i tryed to play on sb IT was very inactive there was one game hosted with afk host so i tryed to host myself but after 10 minutes no1 join my game so i give Up ... Anyway its a nice project i hope IT will be more active soon

Given that how bad 1.18 is, maybe people will look for alternatives like Iccup and SB. Then again, only the bw players know how bad 1.18 is right now...

Try getting a game in the chat channel rather than blindly hosting. It's a small community at the moment but people do play. It's entirely possible the active players online for those 10 minutes were already in games with each other.

Ehm...

I can get the Shield Battery client running with Wine, however I cannot get it to launch Brood War properly, the client will flicker for a moment into some type of game screen, and the brood war client will never start up.

Has anyone had luck?

We spent some time looking at 1.18 and decided that it wasn't quite ready for prime time on ShieldBattery, so we're going to keep using 1.16.1 for a bit. We still wanted it to be easy to use whatever copy of Brood War you have, though, so we spent some time working on a solution that will serve us well in an environment where Blizzard is actually releasing patches. ShieldBattery now supports auto-patching BW installs to the correct version, without affecting your installation in any way. So long story short, you can point ShieldBattery at a 1.18 install or a 1.16.1 install, and it'll do the right thing.

Since we're not using 1.18, you won't be able to watch replays created from 1.18 games, or use the features that were added in 1.18 (APM display, etc.). But on the plus side, your mouse won't be laggy and unit portraits are still performant

Support for newer game installs. We can now handle installs of newer versions of StarCraft than 1.16.1! We're of the opinion that 1.18 would be a downgrade for existing ShieldBattery users, so we won't actually be using that yet, but we do support transparently converting newer installations back to a pristine 1.16.1 copy automatically (without affecting your installation in any way). Feel free to point things to your updated copy in the settings, and/or stop having to maintain two separate installations just to use our service.

In your face, user. If you try to launch the app when it's already running the background, the original app will actually be brought to the front now.
B̈étte̋r character support. Users with non-latin characters in their Windows usernames should have a 1000x better time launching games now. As in they'll actually work again. Whoops.
FAQ accuracy. The FAQ has been updated to be more accurate towards our actual requirements, as well as to provide a link to the (Now free! Now working with ShieldBattery!) Brood War download.
