Interviews with Marwin & Julia.

Turn on Reading Mode
The first set of qualifiers were played last weekend and the stage was set for some epic games. The first qualifier had 96 players battling it out, but in the end, there was only one winner. A Ukranian Terran by the name of Marwin showed an impressive performance and took down an Italian Protoss, AlfiO, 2-0 in the finals. In the second qualifier we had flashbacks of the first season of TLS as Zergs ran rampant over the qualifier. This time it was the Polish Zerg, Julia, who defeated the Finish race picker, Napoleon, in a very drawn-out finals with a 2-1 score.
With the remaining two qualifiers being played this weekend, tension runs high as this is the last chance for players to qualify for the Round of 24. Unfortunately, Pro7ect, who made it to the Ro16 in TLS Season 1, has declined his invitation to Season 2 of TLS. Consequently, the number of players qualifying based on points has been increased to nine. So give it your best shot and maybe you'll gather enough points to reach the Ro24 in TLS and all the glory that comes with it. Note that any potential tiebreakers will be played next weekend where we'll have a special show prepared just for you.
So what you're waiting for? Join in and take the shot at becoming a part of the Brood War legacy. Also make sure to tune in the cast which will be today at 19:00 GMT (+00:00) for third qualifier and tomorrow for the fourth.

Qualifier Recap
Qualifier #1
The second season of the Teamliquid Legacy Starleague started off with a bang in the first qualifier tournament. The highlight of the early round stages was definitely the match between Malkiyah and dsaqwe on Fighting Spirit during the round of 128. The match, which was over 50 minutes long, featured a highly entertaining mid game that developed into a low economy late game as resources around the map ran dry.
Semifinal 1
The first semifinal match featured the Terran player, Marwin, versus the Zerg player, WhistleR on Neo Jade. WhistleR opened with an unorthodox nine pool with gas trick build and while his zerglings were able to break into the Terran base completely unscouted, a lack of follow-up on WhistleR’s part allowed Marwin to defend. WhistleR teched to mutalisks and, in response, Marwin chose to go for a base race instead of staging a traditional defense. However, WhistleR’s mutalisk count was simply too much for Marwin to handle and the Terran player lost the game.
The second game featured a passive early game. A number of errors in positioning and attention on the part of both players led to army trades in the mid game. Marwin gained a significant advantage in the late game, enough that he was able to build battlecruisers to seal the victory, and the match moved to a deciding game three.
In that deciding match on Fighting Spirit, the game was over in short order as WhistleR failed to execute a four pool rush and lost the game almost immediately. Marwin moved on to the finals.
The other semifinal match featured the two Protoss players, Effany and WandS. The first game took place on Neo Jade, and Effany leveraged the successful execution of his more risky one-gate expansion build into becoming a significant economic lead versus his opponent.
The second game on Match Point ended much more quickly than the first, as WandS lost his scouting probe and allowed Effany to rush to dark templar versus his four-gate build. Effany moved on to the finals.
The Finals
The first game in the finals match between Effany and Marwin, took place on Neo Jade. Effany opted for a two-base arbiter build with eight gateways in support. However, he chose to extend the what is normally an all-in play with a far-away hidden expansion. This decision allowed Marwin to take the initiative against Effany’s overextended force after defending against the recalls.
The second game on Match Point began with some very aggressive FD play from Marwin against Effany’s one-gate expansion. Marwin was able to get vultures into Effany’s main after distracting the Protoss player with a marine and tank force outside of the natural. Marwin followed this attack with a very quick third base. Effany responded with reaver drop play, but he was not able to do significant damage and punish Marwin’s greedy play. With the economic advantage, Marwin was able to attack-move across the map against his opponent, winning him the game, the match, and a place in the main event.
Qualifier #2
The second qualifier tournament for the second Teamliquid Legacy Starleague took place a day after the first. Make sure to take a look at the match between the Zerg player, iNF3cted, and the Protoss player, Mazur, which took place in the round of 32, because it was a fitting rematch of one of the matches that took place in the previous season of the Legacy Starleague.
Semifinals
The first semifinal match took place between the Terran player, andreyy, and the Zerg player, Napoleon. The first game between the two took place on Neo Jade and featured very passive mech play off three bases from the Terran player. In response, Napoleon massed queens and took bases across the map, a strategy which proved to be the winning solution to the game.
In the second game, which took place on Match Point, andreyy opted for a very unorthodox one-base starport vessel build against Napoleon’s two-base mutalisk opening. The unorthodoxy failed in the face of Napoleon’s strength in standard play, and Napoleon moved on to the finals.
The second semifinal match took place between the Zerg player, Julia, and the Protoss player, Arcneon. The first game, which took place on Neo Jade, featured Protoss corsair play against the Zerg mutalisk and scourge build. Despite being on only two bases, the Protoss player was able to achieve map control in the mid game and he executed what looked to be a significant attack on the Zerg. Julia was able to turn the game around, however, and ended up beating Arcneon in a game of attrition in which the Protoss player fought until the very last moment in an attempt to pull victory out of the jaws of defeat.
The second game on Match Point started out badly for Arcneon, who opted for a non-standard wall configuration outside of his natural that did not, in fact, turn out to be ling-tight when tested by Julia in an attack. Arcneon proceeded to attack with zealots before speed was finished, losing them in the process. In realization that his opponent was going for mutalisks, Arcneon built a large number of panic photon cannons for defense, but was unable to prevent significant worker losses. While the game dragged on for a little while further, Julia was at a point that was too far ahead to lose the game and thus the Zerg player moved on to the finals.
The Finals
The finals of the second qualifier tournament featured the Terran player, Napoleon, versus the Zerg player, Julia. In the first game, on Neo Jade, Napoleon opened with a one-factory expand into a fast starport build. His attempt to get a brilliant irradiate on the mutalisk stack failed because of Julia’s good scourge control. Julia then began to seriously harass the Terran base until Napoleon was able to build up enough forces to attack Julia’s hidden expansion in the bottom right corner of the map. Julia was able to retake control of the game in the later stages, bringing the Terran down to barely any economy at all and actually getting to the point where an infested command center was able to be created.
The second game of the finals was played on Match Point. This game opened with a gas steal on the part of the Zerg player in the attempt to delay the Terran player’s build so that the two-hatch mutalisk build would be more potent when it struck. Napoleon was able to defend against the mutalisks with turrets and marines, and he went up to five barracks in order to attack. However, as the mid game started it became clear that the multitasking was not going in Napoleon’s favor. His abortive attacks were constantly hounded by the fact that his unit control and rallying was somewhat haphazard and scattered across the map. Napoleon was able to gain an economic advantage over his opponent, however, and this led to the ability to trade armies into the late game and win.
The deciding game of the finals took place on Fighting Spirit. Julia opened with the intent to drop lurkers into the Terran main and the natural. This attack did substantial damage to the Terran economy, especially at the natural, before it was finally defeated by Napoleon. While a small marine drop in the main delayed mining time for a little bit, Napoleon suicided a large amount of his containment force outside of the Zerg main by running them into lurkers under swarm. With three quarters of the bases on the map controlled by the Zerg by the later stages of the game, Julia was able to win the game, the match, and the qualifying spot into the main tournament despite Napoleon’s best efforts.

Marwin, going into the day many people said you were the favorite to win this qualifier. How do you feel?
Well, I am happy I could qualify to tls, but really didn't expect to get 1st place. There were so many good players and I didn't do really well...
Now there may be people who do not know you. How long have you been playing Starcraft and did you try out for TLS1?
First I tried starcraft like in 99th. But didnt play seriously and I had many breaks during all the time I've been playing bw. I didn't play tls1 because I didn't play bw at that time at all. I played dota ^^
It’s great to see another Terran make it into the top 24, do you feel any burden representing the few Terrans?
Of course I do. It will be really tough to compete with all those guys, while people or even some fans expect good results from me.
You played several TvP’s. What is the key to being so good against Protoss?
I think I'm quite good against aggressive style tosses because I feel I'm better at multitasking when you are trying to press//harass each other at the same time.
Your final opponent was Alfio, is this someone you have played before?
Yeah, we played some games before and I guess I managed to win because I anticipated his plans on game.
Alfio said he had a fever during this tournament, do you feel like his health would have affected the results of the finals?
Definitely it did, but as I mentioned before I didnt do well, was tired and sleepy.
What are your goals going into TLS2 proper?
I don't set any aims just wanna flow on the stream (dont know if this expression is correct in english) (T/N: He means "Go with the flow")
You are 5-1 in Gambit’s Cup so your recent results have been outstanding. How much time do you spend practicing?
Not as much as I should. I should really pay more attention playing 1v1 on fish.
How old are you and what pets do you own?
I'm 25 year old and I don't have any pets at my flat but there is a cat grandparents' place. They leave not far from my place.
Are you in a relationship with anyone?
I don't have a gf now :forveralone:
What country do you wish to travel to?
I'd like to go to South Korea and Japan.
What medieval weapon would you use if you were a gladiator?
A cybersword I had some practice using that rofl xD.
Final question, if you had to choose a gladiator fight to the death against one progamer, who would your challenger be?
It would be Samsung Khan Shine.. He was so newbie comparing to other pros, I dont respect him as gamer.
It is very exciting to have you in TLS2. Is there any last words you have for the TLS viewers out there?
Thank all ppl who watch my games and support me. I'll try not to disappoint you though unfortunately
I don't have enough motivation.
I don't have enough motivation.
Thank you very much for your time!
Julia
+ Show Spoiler +
Julia, you made it to the finals and won! How do you feel?
It's fine, didn't expect much since I don't play too often now, and if I do, it's mostly only low level icc games.
Did you try to qualify in the first qualifier? If so, what happened in that one?
I got rolled over by +1 speedlots in my first game, didn't see the moment the protoss went out of his base and lost immediately.
It took you 4 qualifiers last time to advance, do you feel much relief now?
I wasn't practicing for this at all, got addicted to 'Don't Starve' lately, when I had some free time to play. So no real expectations, it's nice to have won the qualifier.
You return to the Ro24 as most people expected. What is your plan to do better this time around?
Depends how much time I can gather for practice, study/work makes me game less now and I can't really prepare and do good.
Is there a particular match up you fear at this time?
I don't like zvz and play it poorly, mostly beacause I can't find people to play zvz on icc.
Napoleon took you to three games? What was your mindset going into that third game?
After an expected loss on Match Point where you can't win vs equal terran opponents, I was happy it's a more normal map, where I can expand and the terran can't just wait for 30 minutes in one spot to win the game. I was pretty sure I can win the game on FS.
You also defeated a Protoss in the Ro4 against a rising player Arcneon. Were you impressed by his play?
Surprisingly he managed to break through my defences at one point, in-game it felt he might roll over my force for a while, I lost the natural, got few drones left, but luckily he was mined out by then. It seems Neon didn't expect muta tech to do that good, so I got to catch him off guard a bit.
The Gambit’s cup is entering the playoffs and NW has made the top 3. Do you think NW can take down SAS?
Sadly, I think NW finished 4th already? [T/N]
As a zerg player, what is your hotkey setup like?
12345678 - hatches
09876 - units
09876 - units
What is your favorite zerg unit, and which non zerg unit do you hate the most?
Hydras are great. I don't like Templars and Reavers when the protoss defends in late game, makes the game rather boring and annyoing, if you play a few games like that in a row.
Is there a favorite map you like to play on?
Out of the currently popular maps it would be Python - because you need to go out of your natural to make an expansion. Also, there are islands here, it's really a fine map, simple and good.
If Zerg could have any new unit that is missing from the game what would it be?
We need an Infested Nexus, where infested templars come out, and throw quite normal storms on the protoss army... where is my infested kerrigan with storm from the campaign?!
Why is you starcraft name Julia?
No idea, some things just happen ;O
JulyZerg and Reach get into a hotdog eating contest, who would win?
JulyZerg finishes all the hotdogs, then eats Reach alive, then eats the hotdogs from Reach's table, then goes out to dinner...[T/N] hahahahaha!
Alright that concludes the interview, do you have any last words for the TLS fans out there?
During the qualifierss someone said I bm'ed him especially. This is of course not true, I bm everyone equaly and thoroughly, you should not feel special about it. (I'm looking forward to watching some good games during the last two qualifiers).
Thank you!
