Streaming BW has always been a pain due to the full screen color palette, necessitating windowed mode or some ugly hacks to get it working. I wrote a plugin for OBS (obsproject.com) that captures full screen BW and performs the proper palette conversions. Unfortunately it isn't perfect, for some reason the out of game palettes have incorrect values, but the in-game palettes I tested seemed fine. The cursor will also not be visible in battle.net screens.
Screenshots (demonstrates some broken palettes): + Show Spoiler +
Download: http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/R1CH/BWCapture.zip
Put it in your 32-bit OBS/plugins/ folder, a new source option called Brood War Capture should then become available. Will not work with w-mode, only normal full screen BW.
Note this isn't tested much at all and is very much still proof-of-concept stage, as I only have a single monitor to work with here it was impossible to tell if this was actually working properly. Let me know!

wow, this is great. Will it be used for TLS? :D

Thanks R1CH! I hope this helps people who've only been able to stream BW in windowed mode so far.
|
ASWESOME! Makes me even sader that fucking microsoft doesn't release dx10 for winXP.
EDIT: couldn't get it to work, Win7 x64, screen stays black T_T
|
Mine didn't show up on the source list when I right click do you just put the dll in the plugins folder or do you need to make a seperate folder inside it?
Edit:nevermind i restarted my computer and it shows up now.
|
from screenshots it seems just 1 color from the palette not working? I don't know if you published the source anywhere, but might be just a tiny oversight someone else might pick out from code review
|
nice, but most streamers uses Xsplit... Is there any chance to upgrade your plugin resource for FS?

change to OBS, it's better

I would be curious to see how well this works. I am starting to regret having made the decision to switch to w-mode.
|
tried to test it but my GPU isnt supported

I've been using uscreencapture up until now and it haven't had any issues, aside from the initial regedit to get the reso right. Is there anything specific that this does differently? I noticed that it captures the actual game instead of just a "work-around" that uscreencapture is where it just captures that section of your monitor instead.
|
uscreencapture makes me unable to use my webcam, webcam can't capture anything, just black screen only. So this plugin will be the best once its perfected :D

R1CH coded something for BW. We´re back baby !!

Wow, this is amazing! I don't mind the out-of-game palettes being screwed up, however, it seems like perfectly white gets converted to brown in-game. This includes the text messages in the middle of the screen telling you you have too few minerals etc. Otherwise this seems... perfect!
|
Ah, which map does that happen on?
|
I was playing on a somewhat old version of Fighting Spirit. Didn't think the maps mattered, I'll do a quick run to see if other maps are effected.
EDIT: Tested it on 4 different maps with all 3 races, same thing happens everywhere. I uploaded a small video to show the effect: http://lutro.priv.no/obsbw.mp4
|
So I tried streaming with it just now and the picture just froze at the join game screen
I tried alt-tabbing to restart the stream or switch scenes, but the OBS window was impossible to grab a hold of, there were some really weird graphical glitches with duplicate taskbars (not visible in the VOD of course).

Oh snap, how did I miss this, awesome! Gonna try it when I get time to play with it a bit.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but most people use the colorfix reg.
|
I dunno if this is the same as what Galetmonster posted, but the frame seems to just stop at the 3:20-3:30 mark, but the sounds are still going on in the background... It's as if OBs crashed from that point on. Any help with this? =/
Example 1 Example 2
Both happen at around the 3:20 mark.

This is likely to be something you already know, but in case you don't, every menu background and their associated elements have a unique 256 color palette in starcraft independent of the game palette, and if you try to mix and match those in a mod that replaces those pcx files, you get some major color distortion going on because it needs those specific palettes in those areas. You can grab those palettes from the various Background pcx files. However I have no idea how battle.net's ui works.

It should use considerably less. Give it a shot if you're unsure, the install and setup is very painless compared to FMLE or xsplit.

I'm pretty sure its one of the new test builds that's breaking it and causing it to lock up, because i was using this a while ago it must have been an older obs build because it never froze this new one however is making the screen lock up i think.
*maybe not i tried it on an older version which is the one I was using before I think, so odd :S

OBS uses comparable CPU time to XSplit when I'm streaming BW in WMode. With XSplit it used to have small stutters, but with OBS everything is smooth, even on slower encoding speeds and 10 quality on like 500 kbps upload.
You can actually make OBS capture the inside BW window (no title/minimize/maxmize/etc. bar) and outside window (with the title bar/etc.) in WMode automatically and you can still see overlays, unlike XSplit which automatically captures just the game, not the overlays - it's just indispensable for casting.
The only con is that the bitrate varies a lot more (and is higher) than XSplit so it dropped some frames until I configured it a bit better, but the bitrate is still more than XSplit. I'll try to further tweak it to reduce the spikes. Maybe it's because of the higher quality of sound.
I like the interface way more, it's faster and cleaner. I just love it. As for ease of use/setup, OBS and XSplit are pretty much the same, maybe I'd give a tiny edge to OBS.
Thanks for the plugin R1CH (and all the work on OBS), it's awesome, going to use OBS + BW Full Screen plugin all the time when I stream me playing.
If I knew/understood more I'd help code for it. :<
Btw, is there any way to add overlays when streaming full screen? They don't have to be visible inside the game, just on the output and the OBS preview. There must be some way to capture the overlays and mix them in as a source with the full screen bw output source.

Thanks! :D Just checked it out, this is amazing, I've always wanted to have an overlay while streaming full screen! :DDDD
Now too bad I don't have a second monitor for chat. xD
Edit: Seems you can disable and enable overlays and other windows obscuring the software window capture if you enable or disable aero.

lol I don't know, it just doesn't. I've got W7 64 bit, and using 32 bit OBS (obviously, since this plugin is only for 32 bit).
Try the latest version, of OBS and all software.
It freezes only when you stream with OBS and this plugin? Does it freeze when you play music/youtube or stream with other software while playing?
EDIT: Btw, there's a simple auto scene switcher plugin that works with BW: http://obsproject.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1785

I tried installing but when I go to add Broodwar as a scene (either game or software) it won't come up under sources. Yes BW is running. I don't know if this is a result of adding this into the pluggins folder or not, but I had and removed BW on my scenes list previously when i got frustrated with windowed mode
anyone know what to do?

R1CH, you're amazing, still coding stuff for BW after all these years. Cheers to the wizard!

No idea then. I know BW/windows freeze from time to time if you run streaming/music programs while playing in full screen - if you have an older version/build of Windows 7 64 bit (ie. not updated). But if it never froze while you were just normally playing and listening to music, I don't know how to fix it.

Ugh yea this is gettin annoying, seems like everyone with a problem has the same as mine basically hopefully someone can figure this one out.

Do you think it matters if it's Windows Vista and not Windows 7? My stream just seems to stop after 3:20, but the sound still functions while the frame is frozen...
|
I am on Windows 7 and it still freezes for me, are you on Vista?
|
On February 18 2013 11:05 zoNin wrote: I am on Windows 7 and it still freezes for me, are you on Vista?
Yeah, I'm on Vista. And I also tried to stream while having nothing else on but BW and OBs, but that still freezes on me...
|
Hmm, I'm not sure if Vista matters, I know it doesn't support XP, but I think Vista is okish. OBS is using DX11 I think, which isn't supported in XP or something like that. Try to check their forum, there's a few sticky topics explaining some things.
Yesterday I was live replay casting windowed mode software capture inner window, and it freezed for me (really annoying when you're trying hard to cast live :<), which is weird because I tested it a few times before that and it worked fine. I'm going to test it with the BW Plugin again, but last time I used it it worked.
|
freshly reformatted windows 7 still freezing, rich come back!
|
Also getting that crash after a few minutes of streaming on my end. Windows 7 64 Bit OS for me, can't remember if I installed a 32 or 64 bit version of OBS, but that is most likely the problem.
|
I was trying to stream Broodwar campaign to celebrate HotS, the longest stream I managed using this plugin was about 10 minutes before crashing.
Win7 x64 Using 32 Bit OBS. Same obs settings work just fine for SC2 game capture.

edit: nvm I should read more carefully

i have verry low fps on video (local recording included) while having good fps ingame and around 40 in obs.

Is there any possibility to have this plugin source? Or at least give it a configuration value that allows you to select the .exe process so that it can be used with the other blizzard games that suffer from the exact same problem such as Diablo, Warcraft 2, etc?
|
Of course when I google'd my problem it brought me here
Thanks r1ch

Hmm...no crash or anything for me, however my broodwar on the stream ends up just freezing after a few minutes, the video, not the audio.

Why you are using so much directx 10? For windows xp is not working --
|
Are there certain settings that need to be change in obs when using this? I was able to stream HQ sc2 fine but when i stream bw it is very choppy ;;.

Me. I've been using it for almost 2 years. Previously, Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder to stream at livestream.com, ustream.tv, justin.tv.
I would highly recommend people to use OBS to stream BW as well.
