Proleague Finals Rank 1st in Viewership

10-11 Proleague Finals Match Ranks 1st in Viewership

The fervor over e-sports remains unchanged in its 10 year history.

The 2010-11 Shinhan Proleague finals match achieved a viewership of over 1% through Ongamenet’s live broadcast on the 19th.

The finals between the two rival telecommunications corporations recorded an average viewership ratio of 1.777% (16-19 male, TNmS scale) and ranked 1st during its broadcast time on cable TV.

The fact that mass viewership was recorded by teenagers rather than people in their 20’s is evidence that Brood War remains popular in following generations since the first Proleague finals in 2003. The final set between Flash and Best reflected the most response from viewers, achieving a max viewership ratio of 2.514% (21% of males aged 16-19). In other words, 2 out of every 10 male Korean high school students watched the last set of the Proleague final.

The popularity of Proleague continued on the internet as well. From the beginning to the end of the finals match, "Flash", "Action", "Bisu", "Best", "Violet", "Ongamenet", and other Proleague-related subjects reached upper levels on the search bar rankings in individual portal sites. Netizens also showed interest in "Ryu Ji-hye" and "Yellow".

Appropriately living up to his nickname “Final Boss”, Flash was awarded MVP after leading his team to victory with two wins. KT is now the 2nd consecutive winner in Proleague since they twice defeated SKT1 in both the last 09-10 season and the most recent 10-11 season.

Man, I wish 2 out of 10 of my peers watched Starcraft. At least then I wouldn't be so quite and clueless in most conversations .

I can only imagine how awesome it would be to be able to talk BW with so many peers IRL.

A rare piece of good news about BW!

The finals between the two rival telecommunications corporations recorded an average viewership ratio of 1.777% (16-19 male, TNmS scale) and ranked 1st during its broadcast time on cable TV.

Does this mean 1.777% of the 16-19 male population watched it? Or is that the most popular demographic of the 1.777% of the population?

there are a lot of online services that stream the finals (daum pot, ongamenet website etc) and a lot of koreans watch through these media.

if this fgiure doesn't include these sources, then this is a real triumph

Wait what... 1,7% in a specific demographic is enough to rank first? Can anybody explain that to me how this works? Does that mean that the viewers in Korea are uniformly spread out over more than 100 channels and just getting more than 1% of the viewers gives a program the first rank?

First among cable channels. This excludes KBS, SBS and a few MBC channels (not MBCGame). More than 1% for a cable channel is really good.

But I'm more interested to know what the percentages are like for internet viewership because more people are watching it from streaming sites like Tving these days. Sadly, I don't think they record statistics for those.

Was one hell of a fucking drama

+ Show Spoiler +
I thought KT would be in a tough time, since SKT1 were gonna get their "sniping" lineups for sure, when Action got hit in that late-pre lurker timing T_T (look for stats vs soo to see how that those lurkers are, prolly even later cus action had ensnare for some reason)

Better than last year, for sure :D

Well, the whole SKT-KT rivalry and the possibility of SKT's revenge from last year's loss sure helped raise the Final's viewership ratings.

+ Show Spoiler +
I totally approve SKT's decision to send out Best instead of Bisu in the Ace match, but if they sent out Bisu instead, the ratings during the ace match could've been like over 5% :p.

Yeah, but when you think about it that way, it means those statistics don't even do justice to the actual amount of viewers watching the finals. Which is really just fucking amazing. This is awesome news.

Really heartwarming to see fans rally behind such an amazing pro scene.

Hope this means BW will live on for years to come.

OGN and MBC should do a cable package deal and sell it overseas, I'd subscribe .

Also this is just for OGN? What about MBC's channel?

Fuck yes, I actually REALLY wanted to know the statistics of how much viewership is still in Korea. This warms my heart to see this. Also, to see that the LR thread had like 400 pages, that's another warming sign. BW4LYFE!~

surely not? how could it increase from 1.777% of the targeted audience to 20% (males 16-19) in just a few sets? As well as get an overall peak viewership of 2.514% if you could only get 1.777% of the targeted audience.

the reason why BW is better than sc2 is bcos of control group of 12 units. We always see sc2 unit clump together, thats so fake compare to BW that move in different platoon.

User was warned for this post
Marine is Terran strongest unit but it might be Terran's biggest weakness. Bcos of Marine so OP, other Terran unit regrettably have to be weak..

Nice. I wonder if these numbers were somewhat boosted by a smaller venue. I'm also really interested in what the online viewership was but I guess we may never get those numbers.

Better in viewership numbers yes, but that is subjective remember that many SC2 fans hate how bad the graphics of BW are to their eyes and how incomprehensible the game is at times. Can't blame them for that.

The final set between Flash and Best reflected the most response from viewers, achieving a max viewership ratio of 2.514%

is that 2.5% of all Koreans? South Korea has a population of about 48 million citizens so that would be about 1.2 million viewers!

Unfortunately that means 2.5% of all people watching tv at the time. I don't want to be a kill joy, but being #1 cable program for it's time slot has probably happened for all of the proleague finals, so you guys should not read too much into this.

Alrighty. It's time, I suppose.

Dearest Starcraft friends of another breed:

Suppose I played BW a decade ago but never got into the pro scene. Then, years later, I began playing SC2 and fell in love with ESPORTS. And now I'm really interested in watching the Proleague games, after the fact. Is there a way to do that now? Will there be a way to do that "soon"?

I'm thinking it probably was too, but that's not the point. Imagine a video game competition being #1 on cable tv in the US or anywhere else for that matter. It's an accomplishment in its own right and just shows that bw is still relevant in korea.

It would be cool to see a showmatch of GSL stars versus SPL stars on Starcraft 2: Brood Wars (I mean the mod recreating Brood Wars under SC2 interface). Just for fun. I guess Wings of Liberty is not legitimate enough in Korea to make it happen...

Where is the information which proves that BW is doing great? There is no comparison to last year's viewerships nor are there any absolute numbers.

This shouldnt be regarded as a pessimistic comment, I really just dont get it.

Judging from German, your sport is probably soccer or shall I say, football. Are you in high school? If you are, then imagine 2 out of 10 kids in your class talking about Brood War, yeah....

Best news I've read in a very very long time. It should shut up people who say BW is dying.

SC2 was the first EPSORT I started following and playing, but watching that proleauge was by far more entertaining that any other SC2 tourny I have seen. Makes me sad that I showed up so late to the party

As you can see from these numbers, it's not too late. And grats, you wrote E***** like it is supposed to be written.

Nice to hear. I'm glad Blizzard didn't succeed in killing BW. It was an amazing finals. I'm glad we lowly foreigners had a stream for it I still can't believe people (even mods here at TL) were watching LoL over this. That really boggles the mind.

Hoping it had something to do with the fact they wanted to see what all the fuss was about with LoL, but yeah that sounds so unlike TL. I want names! ;x

Wow! This is pretty great!

I was watching this via re-stream and I think the viewers peaked at 4,000.
This might not seem much, but compared to other finals in 2010-2011, that was quite a high number.
And keeping in mind that it was only a re-stream. And IEM was also happening at the same time together with the DotA2 tournament.

No im not in high school anymore lol, 2 out of 10 kids watching the by far most important match would be a terrible rating for German soccer...so is this all? You judge the state of BW in Korea on this single information?

I mean its a nice fact but I still dont get where the point is which makes people go like "omg BW is still doing great in Korea". So maybe I missed the point in the rest of the news, do the percentage allow any speculation on how many viewers the finals had?

I remember an old news which said that OGN had a market share of about 3% in 2005 and 1,8% in 2008 over an annual period so 1,77% for this event doesnt seem too high or am I mixing up?

A model who did some ads for OGN and has been seen at some of Flash's games iirc.

You have to look at it for what it is. As mainstream as BW is all eSports is niche. I am going to pull some comparative figures out of my ass now but i don't think i'd be too far off. 2 out of 10 kids watching BW is enormous compared to the..... 1 out of 10000 kids in US watching SC2?

This also doesn't count people who watched online or as a group. This article is assuming that 1 TV=1 Person also

With the current trend all over the world. More people are tuning in to things online via a stream. So lets take the % as amazing as likely many many many more people were watching online.

How do you know that it assumes 1 person/tv? Every ratings calculation system that I know of doesn't work like that. And also the 2 of 10 kids number is most likely also 2 of 10 kids who were watching tv at the time of the finals, not overall.

No traceable amount. The best estimations you can get were by seeing the stream viewers and youtube views for non-chinese foreign interest. Kespa has not shown any intent in extending overseas.

The original article clearly states that 2 out of 10 Korean high school males in the entire country watched the final set. How many times do I have to reclarify this?

considering they were planning on having the finals in china, there is probably a sizable viewership not included in the television statistics or the TL stream.

To be fair (I'm assuming) most of the foreigners watched from the TL features streams, and those got like 2000 at most so it doesn't really matter (onpaper).

"achieving a max viewership ratio of 2.514% (21% of males aged 16-19). In other words, 2 out of every 10 male Korean high school students watched the last set of the Proleague final."

Oh I'm sorry, I can see how 4000 extra eyes can make a notable difference in comparison to Korean viewership.

It's amazing to see how fast people take the opportunity to throw shit at SC2. Stay classy, people.

Anyways, I'm so fucking glad for the teams and the BW scene in general (especially in light of other recent news... ;; ). The event was deserving of every single viewer it got, it was absolutely amazing. I haven't been this excited for BW in years.

I do hope that SKT will bring home the title to its rightful place next time though...

It sounds low to me but I guess I don't know what is the common viewership for the cable channels in Korea. But it seems from the article that this was high so I'm happy.

So with this combined with Wemade unable to pawn off their BW team, it seems to me there's a pretty clear case of top teams being able to generate tons of revenue and bottoms teams barely making ends meet. I can see why SKT1 vs KT generate huge ratings. But is it a sustainable model?

Then again, I guess at this point there's no reason to look at long term when things are dicey even in the short term.

Wtf?

What are you talking about...??? There is virtually no one in this thread except like one guy who's been warned, and that was almost nothing. Don't accuse us without grounds, that's just insulting. The people who still live these threads are the BW old guard, we are the definition of classy.

First in what? First among Proleague finals, or the most popular TV show at the time?

The final set between Flash and Best reflected the most response from viewers, achieving a max viewership ratio of 2.514% (21% of males aged 16-19).

I don't understand this. Is it 2.5% of all Koreans, mostly in the form of 21% of males 16-19?

Either way, really good news for BW. I think a show that does that well among male teenagers is probably not dying anytime soon.

I think it's that it's doing well, but maybe not quite well enough to justify so many 6-figure salaries. But, obviously, I'm not an expert. Plus, also, MBC is changing the whole channel (so it's not really about BW), and WMF is scrapping all their WC3, SC2, and Counterstrike teams to keep the BW team afloat. Mitigating circumstances both.

Fomos rumor(Citynews) that Proleague Final is first in viewrship under the circumstances of age 16-19 male. The actually viewership is OGN 0.319%, XTM 0.097%, MBCgame 0.182%,total 0.598%.
Korean Viewership: less 5% is close to shut down, less than 10% is bad, 20% is hot,and 30% and more is national famous.

SC2 fan here to celebrate and to congratulate the BW fans on their success!
Hopefully this will energizes the Foreign BW scene. I'm already seeing more and more [BW] featured streams on TL. Great stuff! I'm of the opinion that there's a place for all games at the e-Sports table.
Hopefully, RTS brothers, there will be a time that we can all get along. And topics like this contains no X > Y posts.

Hurray for BW!

why would korean tv need such high ratings? Popular american tv shows (let's take Lost for example) got around 10 million some of its seasons. 10 million is only 3.33% of US population and that's for a primetime major network tv channel.

surely a cable channel targeted mainly for young males incorporates that into their business plan.

As long as they are still reaching their key audience it can't be that bad. Those numbers can actually be a positive to advertisers wanting to reach that demographic, which hopefully means the channels are still profitable.

It's never ever been above 5%. Back when the first Hyungjun series was airing, the media were saying how brilliant the ratings were for a gaming show and yet the show averaged 1+%. That's about as good as it can get. It's a niche market. Not to mention that free streams are available or for a small fee, you can also watch all OGN/MBC programmes on Tving.

People can enjoy both, but it could be better if they also know which is what at the same time.
BW - closest thing to perfection in RTS up to this day.
SC2 - a good game which aspires to become like BW.

yes, please BW never die!!! i love how proleague has strong viewership lately especially for their playoffs/grand finals

I've only watched proleague finals for more recent times, like SKT vs MBC where july stomped oov. Samsung vs Lecaf, the battle between those two foes. SKT vs Lecaf oz, how can we forget jaedong vs fantasy? SKT vs KTF, the time fabled rivalry between the two most epic BW teams ever~~

I'm glad KT finally won proleague, even if the old greats such as Nal_ra, Reach, and Yellow weren't there to partake in it.
