Hi there. Not sure if this topic has been made yet, but I couldn't see it anyway.
With the latest release of Mac OS X, Starcraft will no longer work (to my knowledge) because it's a PowerPC app that requires Rosetta to run. Rosetta has been officially deprecated and I don't see any immediate way to bring it back.
Now, I don't know how many people play Starcraft under Mac OS X—I imagine it's a small minority—but does anyone know if Blizzard plans to make an Intel binary? At this rate, Starcraft is literally the only reason as to why I'm not upgrading yet. I guess I could run the whole thing in a VM, but I'd really prefer a native solution.
|
I've always hated the mouse acceleration in OS X, so don't use it.
Still, it's too bad that those who like it can't play.
|
Yeah, I played on a mac for a while, bad graphics card/video drivers and mouse acceleration were annoying so I switched to PC. Sadly I've heard that Lion isn't really living up to expectations and is trying too hard to move away from the conventional concept of a laptop. It's supposed to be more like a tablet, which really isn't what I want in a computer >_>
|
Lion looks terrible, however regarding the OP, my friend used to always play BW on a mac, but in the meantime he runs windows on parallels, so I think you can work your way around it, if you go for Lion.
|
Weird that you guys dislike the mouse acceleration so much. I guess I've gotten used to it since switching to Mac years ago.
I suppose I could just use my old G4 laptop to play Starcraft and upgrade my main computer to Lion. But it sucks that it's now impossible to play this game on modern Macs without going through the trouble of running a VM or getting a separate partition.
|
That's sad..
I was thinking about getting a mac too..
|
I'm not going to lie, my heart skipped a beat a few beats when I saw the title preview "Brood War will no longer..."
|
Damn. I don't want to install windows, but it seems it may be the only option, if I decide to upgrade. Can anyone confirm that this is true?
|
I read somewhere that you now have to install bootcamp and play through window, they won't update it. Sorry guys. Edit: My source is in french on the blizzard website so I'm sure you can find it in english there.
|
I just opened a support ticket asking for this but yeah, I guess it's over for Starcraft on Mac OS X. They've got a new game, Starcraft II, that they want everyone to buy, so I doubt they'll be fixing this in spite of how many people still play the game.
They've done a lot of great updates throughout the years and kept the game running for longer than I thought, but in the end they're a business that wants to make money, and a few Mac OS X users who already bought the game just aren't worth their time, I guess.
EDIT: for future reference, here's a message I got from tech support.
Greetings, Due to certain changes in the Mac operating system, StarCraft, StarCraft: Brood War, Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction will not run on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). While these titles should still technically be able to operate under Boot Camp, we will not be able to provide support for these titles running on Mac OS X 10.7. For more information about Mac Boot Camp, please see Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/We will continue to offer support for these titles running on Mac OS X 10.6 and below. At this time, we expect Warcraft III to run on Mac OS X 10.7. However, the updater that we use to apply patches does not work on Mac OS X 10.7 natively, so while a patched-up version of the game will work, you will be unable to patch up to the latest version of the game when running Mac OS X 10.7. We don't currently have a timeline available for when we may be able to release updated patches with a compatible Updater program. For more information about Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, please see Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/For more information about Mac Boot Camp, please see Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/Regards, Blizzard Entertainment www.blizzard.com/support

There is a way to make StarCraft Broodwar work in MacOS Lion: using Wineskin (free)
1) Download Wineskin: http://wineskin.doh123.com/
2) Install and download the engine: WS8Wine1.1.35 (yeas, not the latest)
3) Use this engine to install Starcraft (Windows Version)
This works perfectly on my Macbook Pro 13'' Mid-2009.
Any question, be free to ask! :D
|
Does this wineskin only work with older games such as Starcraft: BW, or would it work with newer games that would need windows as well?

actually, how do i even use this thing? i downloaded the Wineskin and the WS8Wine1.3.19, installed it, then what do i do?

Thanks for bumping this. Now I have 3 more reasons not to update (SCBW, D2, and WC3). Screw you 10.7! I would have been so disappointed if I would not been able to play Diablo 2.

Same thing happened to me, can't play starcraft and warcraft 3 on my laptop. I just play on my pc though, but it really sucks.

can't figure out how to get this to work.. and even if it runs sc/bw, would it run iccup launcher?
|
I doubt it, you'd likely have to use WINE or something similar for Iccup (or even BW). I own a license for Crossover (a fancy WINE emulator, but I paid for this one. There are free options but I had much better luck with the free trial of this so I bought it) so I'll give it a go when I have a minute to see how BW fairs, and if iccup works.
Edit: The current version of Crossover (which will be the same on Lion) seems to be able to fire up the installer easily. I'll let you know how it goes. According to Codeweaver's (the company that makes Crossover) site, both SC:BW 1.16 and Diablo II have gold ratings, meaning they run flawlessly with the software. WC3 has silver, which usually works but with a few hiccups. Roller Coaster Tycoon is a silver rank and it runs great for me. So it seems WINE is an option for those who already made the jump to 10.7.

dunno if this helps, but AH Launcher works fine in wine for linux...
|
This sucks Wine it is!
|
Sooo glad I am keeping Window XP as my bootcamp. It's really terrible how Brood War seem to be being phased out, but I am sure people will find a way.

Well the first link on there basically tells you what to do step by step, i could copy the entire guide here if you want but itd basically be spam

Lion is bad anyway. I much prefer my Snow Leopard installation.

On October 18 2011 00:55 Iksf wrote:http://lmgtfy.com/?q=wine macPretty easy to use imo, crossover does the same thing with a pretty UI if youv got a copy or spare cash Indeed, I bought Crossover on sale for like $15, I don't know if I would buy it for the full price. It is quite good though. The recent update seems to run steam more stable along with the games I've installed.
If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, there definitely are free options that do just as good. I use Crossfire because it works basically the same on Mac and Linux, so I don't have to learn separate systems, and it is easy to use.

i got BW to work (but not the launcher), but unfortunately, the BW gameplay is very choppy, its framerate is rather low and i feel like i'm playing on normal speed setting :S any ideas as to why?

It's a pain in the ass. Honestly it was one of the reasons i partitioned my drive.

Sorry about taking so long to answer "konadora" and "Entaro[AoV]".
What Ben told is true. Basically WINE is an engine to run Windows code (including applications, like Office) on Unix machines (yeas, MacOS is Unix. In fact BSD).
There is some payed versions, like Crossover, and some free, like Wineskin.
The idea behind it is that it creates a "folder" for you that "emulates" the "C:" Windows drive. So, let me try to explain step by step for the Wineskin:
1) Download Wineskin Winery (the latest, in my case 1.3), with the latest Wineskin Wrapper (in my case 2.5.2) but get the Engine WS8Wine1.1.35 (yeas, not the latest which is 1.3.30 and not the DirectX or OpenGL ones, the CX and CXG ones. I've tested and for Starcraft the latest breaks or becomes choppy);
2) Click at "create new blank wrapper". The idea is that the Wineskin will create a folder inside: "/Users/{username}/Applications/Wineskin/{wrapper name}" Example (my case): "/Users/bsas/Applications/Wineskin/StarCraft"
3) When you create a new wrapper, and runs it first time, you click "install new software", it asks for a EXE file to execute. So, point to the StarCraft installation file. I have the digital copy, which is the "StarCraft 1.15.2 enUS Installer / Installer.exe".
4) It will run the installation. After that, it will ask for a standard EXE file. What Wineskin will do is, every time you "double click" the wrapper again, it will run that executable. In my case I've pointed to: "/Program Files/StarCraft/StarCraft.exe"
5) Basically, you can now double click on the wrapper now.
P.S.: (Advanced)
To "see" the Starcraft folder, go "inside" the wrapper. Option+Click, "Show Package Contents" and you will see the wrapper configuration and the folder. In my case, I can see the folder at: "/Users/bsas/Applications/Wineskin/StarCraft/drive_c/Program Files/StarCraft"
P.S.(2): Probably that works with Diablo 2. I didn't tested.
P.S.(3): It is a good practice to create a "new wrapper" for each application, so you can "try" the best "engine". For example, the best one for Starcraft is "WS8Wine1.1.35" but "WS8WineCXG10.1.1" can work better for Diablo 2 (I don't know, I am just giving an example :D).
P.S.(4): Sorry, my first post I've told 1.3.19, but I've tested and the 1.1.35 is far better and faster. The best way to check the compatibility engine is at "http://appdb.winehq.org/".
I hope that helps.

so does this let you run ICCUP? something tells me an XP install thru bootcamp would be easier...

OSX 10.7 is hurting BW/E-sports.
Hopefully someone figures out how to make BW work on OSX 10.7. I'm grateful that BW still works with Windows 7 (despite the weird ass colour glitches), so hopefully that stays true with Macs. Sucks for Mac users right now I guess.

i got the iccup launcher to run, but i can't use it to play on iccup ( i get some weird error, i can't screenshot with my MBP while playing SC )
for the wine, if i direct it to StarCraft.exe, it runs. however, it's still slightly choppy. sometimes the game is slow, sometimes the game speeds up beyond fastest speed lol.
i'm trying to download SC via the blizzard website, but instead i get the torrent software (blizzard downloader) and it asks me to suggest the directory where i want SC to be installed. however, every single directory i point to says it is invalid -_-
i tried to install it via the CD but it says it's an ancient app so it can't be run lol

I just bought a PC, and holy goat, I cannot play SC or SC2 on the mac now. Mouse acceleration! I never realised how awful it is. Ouch.

You can disable it. Check out the tech support forum. I can play BW and SC2 just as good (more like just as terrible) on both my desktop and my Mac, though I don't have Iccup on my Mac.
On October 21 2011 18:13 Entaro[AoV] wrote: so does this let you run ICCUP? something tells me an XP install thru bootcamp would be easier... For the average person, even setting up a Virtual Box (free program that can run virtual desktops) with XP would be easier, and you wouldn't even have to allot much in terms of system power to run it if you are just running BW and old games like that. I used to have one just for AoE2, and other old games like that but I would prefer WINE if possible so I'll have to work on it. WINE is a lot more work but when you can get it to work, it runs just as good as Windows. I have Windows Steam and a lot of Windows games on my Mac through that and almost all of them work perfectly.

I have a problem, on step 3, i cant find the exe, where is it?
