KT’s Flash, Stats, graduate high school after 3 years of schoolwork
KT’s ace Flash and his teammate Stats graduated high school to officially become adults (T/N: “Adults” as in “not students” anymore. In Korea, there is a distinct divide between students and those who have finished school).
Flash and Stats enrolled in Seoul Digitech High School in 2008. After finishing three years of schoolwork, they received their diplomas during the graduation ceremony that took place on February 9th.
Both Flash’s and Stats’ family, friends, KT’s coaching staff, and teammates were present during the ceremony.
Because Flash – as the current face of progaming – brought publicity and raised the reputation of the school, he received an "Award of Recognition".
After the graduation ceremony, Flash said “I really appreciate it that the school gave me an additional award,” adding that “now that I’m an adult I will return my fans’ support by playing like one during my games”. Stats said “I can’t believe I graduated. Now that I did, I will try to show better performances this year”.
Wait Flash just graduated High School in 3 years? Is that the traditional length for students in Korea? In America High School is four years barring special exceptions.
So between 2008 and now, FLASH successfully completed high school in a time frame comparable or faster to any other student??
the high school that flash and co go to isn't as strenuous as most high schools, as you might figure. same for the college that progamers go to. they know of their special circumstances. it's more symbolic than anything, really.
good 4 flash, though. i think he's of drinking age now

Three years of high school is normal in Korea, but that doesn't actually mean school is shorter than American overall: in Korea it's 1-6 elementary, 7-9 middle school, 10-12 high school. Though iirc some kids don't go to kindergarten, and I forget when school age is (though there was an attempt to lower it while I was in Korea) so that may throw things off one way or another.
id be really interested in how many hours per week they had to dedicate to school. cant be THAT much tbh... i dont think its possible to be the best player in an environment as competitive as starcraft if you have to spend for example... 30 hours a week on other stuff like school and learning.
but still a great feat to finish school while being a successful progamer, gz to both of them.
On February 10 2011 12:25 GazeRocker wrote: Doesnt that mean Flash and Stats need to go to the army soon if they do not go for higher education?
I don't think its necessarily like that, for example isn't Jaedong enrolled on some "online university" which can delay the army a few years as well, and then of course even if they don't do all that there are progamers like Nada who didn't go and he's like 28ish years old now, so he'll have to go coming up, but if you don't go voluntarily you could go as late as in your 30's (ie: nalra)
This could actually become a very bad thing. As Tester and a few other progamers have mentioned, they don't think its so much about the age that gets to them, its the privileges of becoming an adult that gets to them. And by gets to them, I mean start playing badly, like Boxer, who hasn't really been relevent in the BW scene for quite a while now. Now, Stats and Flash can drink and do whatever they want to do now.
And for those of you who say that they can finally focus, its not like school was really time consuming for these two. They didn't have to get up in the morning, go to school, come back, do homework, and then practice. They didn't really go to school, or do homework, at least not much because they were so involved in progaming.

I'm quite curious as to how hard the classes they took were and what sort of grades they got. Because it certainly doesn't take that much dedication in the US to pass the bare minimum requirements for high school with a 2.0. (TBH though Flash's personality makes it impossible for me to imagine him getting bad grades. He's just such an archetypal "good kid.")
They've certainly accomplished a lot more impressive things than passing high school, but congrats to them anyway for making it through the rite of passage.
I am so happy for Kim Dae Yeob and Ee Young Ho, finally getting past the first step to Chintegrating into society. With no Chinsincerity in my heart, I hope he has some Chinkling of what he will do after his days of Toss badassery have passed and makes plans to enroll into higher educational Chinstitutions. Truly, for a man who is chogosu and has a degree can expect hinc et Chinde prosedae.
Can you imagine what Flash and Stats would be like now that they don't have to do school work (not that they did to much of that in the past I suppose), and can be 110% devoted to practicing?
lol take that american drop outs saying US public school is too difficult, Flash managed to wreck face on a pro level while still graduating a korean high school, so funny.

Yeah, I would imagine that this would be flash's school life, less demanding than most high schools. No matter how good flash is in sc:bw, it's pretty much inhuman to be this good at bw and finish a strenuous high school.

i may be wrong but i don't think they were burdened with the 수능 (college entrance exams) that literally break many korean high school kids down.
I know this is not a 'typical' high school (obviously, given the circumstances these guys are in) but props to Flash and Stats for graduating it! Lee Young Ho hwaiting! Chin Dae Yeob hwaiting!

The school system in Korea is 3 yrs high school and 3 yrs middle school I think
having lee god young ho in the deck immediately grants +100 publicity of recognition and adds +1000 armour to all units that are stack among the cards . GO STATS AND GODYOUNGHO!!!!!

well i could be wrong but i don't think high school is tough ... what most Korean students (and majority of the Asian students in general) fear is the university entrance exam ... high school then becomes tough because you have to study your ass off to get into a good university or an university at all ... but for Flash and other progamers i don't think it's big of a deal ... they probably got a lot of support from the school as well seeing how they have been practicing 12 hours of SC a day ... i dont think progamers go to school on a daily basis, maybe once or twice a week/month?? and then they have special tests which are relatively easier so that they can graduate
p/s: all these are from top of my head, i remember reading them from somewhere ... please correct me if i'm wrong

TBH I dont get this at all. Well Germany has another education system but still. High school is sth like a Gymnasium maybe a little bit easier. But really in my opinion its not that much of an achievement. At least it was none for me Ive never looked back at my graduation and thought hell that was a tough time and I had to put in lots of effort for graduating. The school I visited was definitely one of the harder. Hell Ive been drinking and partying 99% of the time xD.

This news surprised me because I was under the impression he dropped out of High School getting homeschooled or tutored. Cool that he was able to graduate while being a progamer.

Really though, it's amazing they've managed to do that while playing pro sc, which is quite a dedication! Gz to both of them!
Wasn't Artosis the one that said that most pros that go to this "School" just have other people do their work so that they can practice and game more?
Most people in here will never read this but yeah, the digital highschool/colleges are phony schools mostly for PR. It's not as if Flash really had to study like regular Korean students or worry about his entrance exam.

It's like going to Florida State.
BOOM Florida State shot. Don't let the Rock hear lol
I mean, congrats to him and all, but c'mon guys.. it's highschool. He didn't receive a pulitzer for his latest in a series of articles on esports or something.
Flash practices a lot less than most progamers. He thinks a lot about late game planning, therefore requiring less time as he doesn't have to go through the early game grind dozens of times per day.

Lol where did you hear that from? He is one of the most practiced progamers around...
I wonder how much they actually had to learn and work for school, especially Flash. This guy must be like "BW""BW"BW""BW""BW" in his head all day long!!
EDIT: He actually is like this in his head.... The answer to my question was allready uin this thread :p Grats anyways

I thought I saw in one interview that he once practiced 21 hours a day for some tournament...
I dunno. It makes sense, outside of individual leagues, where you need to practice the maps and builds, Flash doesn't deviate much (if at all assuming his opponent didn't cheese him or something) from his standard openings and probably knows them back to front.
He's got an injured wrist (wouldn't someone practice less if they were physically injured?) but I feel he's crushing people harder then when he didn't have this problem. He basically chooses the right builds, does the right decisions, and is basically 1a2a3aing people to death in a lot of cases without being forced to use any really demanding mechanics.
