The news I have received goes like this: If nothing goes wrong [then the finals will be held in Shanghai], though we should patiently wait for the news (confirmation).
No korean source given, though the other posts in the thread seem to believe the OP there.

Except that I don't think the korean fans will be too happy about it. The chinese fans, sure, but the team sponsors don't really get much from PR in china.
do you guys recognise how many turned up for wcg last year in chengdu? it was at least over 100,000. this is a noble experiment by ogn (if it is true indeed) to expand outside of korea, and china seems the most logical choice.
Nice to hear SC is going to more countries. Perhaps then we'll get better conditions for the players and teams, as well as more exposure for the sponsors.

Not sure how this can be seen as a bad thing, if China get even more interested in the BW scene its only good for the world as a whole (though I doubt this is real).

First of all WCG is not just a Starcraft tournament. Many people were there to watch other games. In fact I think most Chinese were there to support their Warcraft 3 and FIFA players, though I could be wrong. But it makes sense since those were games which Chinese gamers could have a shot at winning.
Second it would sound a a bit more logical if this were an international event. OSL is 100% Korean. I highly doubt people would come only to watch two Korean kids playing Starcraft. Maybe the Chinese hardcore BW fans would, as for the rest I don't think so. If there were a Chinese player as a finalist this could happen because of nationalism though this is not what's happening.
Third, China might have a large Starcraft community (second only to Korea some might say), but it's still no where near Korea's, at least for Brood War. Maybe in SC2 they will surpass Korea we may never know.

At least 50.000 people will come to watch, if SNSD or WG is coming to do the Opening of Finals lololol

I'm still little skeptical about this. Getting a large fanbase is good, but generally Koreans do not like Chinese.... or other Asians around the area for that matter (I don't know but they just hate each other.... it's loosening up these days, but the tension still exists).
1) What does Korean Air have to with Shanghai 2) It'll be a big bitchslap to Korean fans 3) We all know what happened the last time Chinese Sources revealed something before a Korean Source did.
I feel like the only way this can happen is if Blizzard somehow coerces (no doubt in a dubiously legal way) OGN to hold their finals outside of Korea, to promote SC2 perhaps? EDIT: i mean promote SC2 within Korea, by stopping Koreans from going to the OSL finals

Not a big surprise to me though I doubt it as well. Some points for OSL final to be held in Shanghai:
1) Two Chinese media companies (PLU and NeoTV) officially obtained OSL broadcasting right. NeoTV is from Shanghai, and PLU is in a city close to Shanghai.
2) The STX week will run at the end of August in the Korean pavilion of Shanghai 2010 Expo. There will be 4 STX soul players (currently TossGirl and JulyZerg are confirmed) playing against the Chinese players (F91, Legend, Kurafi and Toodming) between Aug 25 and 29. (hosted by NeoTV)

lol i dont get what you mean how is chinese independent of mandarin or cantonese which are chinese dialects? and mandarin is the official language in china
As I've said, it'll be a massive, massive disservice to Korean fans. You think Chinese are going to care for two Koreans playing each other?
Either way, I read Cho Hyun Min's cyworld, and she posted a teaser about where the finals will be held. Someone asked
"You should host it outside the country this time. It'll be good for Korean Air promotion. How about somewhere like Beijing?" Her reply: "What about the fans inside the country? ^^"
If OGN does this it'll be literally the worst PR move they have made, especially after the OSL final incident last season. I don't see this happening, especially with zero Korean sources even mentioning this.

Written Chinese has two forms: Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese, they are generally mutually intelligible.
While spoken Chinese like Mandarin, Cantonese, MinNanYu (Dialect mainly spoken by Taiwanese) are generally NOT mutually intelligible. Similarly for those hundreds of dialects from China.

I think I kind of understand what he is trying to say, which is that written chinese is always written the same despite the dialect spoken. The aside from Taiwan refers to the Taiwanese writing in traditional text instead of simplified which most of China uses now.
Also, I don't really find this believable. Maybe for the MSL if they had troubles with Gretech... =/

haha ok yeah i thought might be that.. anyway hong kong (and macau ? i forgot lol) also use traditional chinese! :D so much prettier teehee. but so many more strokes to write lol. anyway this is getting off topic

There are actually many Chinese fans of those Korean players. That's why they broadcast the OSL games. I agree with your point that OGN should care more about the Korean fans.

If it's really on 9/11, that would be about the same time I'd be in Shanghai for the world expo. If Stork is in it, I'd definitely drop by even if I need to reschedule some stuff. Otherwise, I'd go if it's convenient.
In order to expand to another market it will be nice (because we all know that now the things are getting rough in Korea because of Blizzard pressure), but it will be a very dumb move because Korean fans are going to get mad about it and you cant hurt your main market when theres a threat in your operation because of a new game (SC2) that is triyng to get your market flooding money. In conclusion: expanding BW proscene in China would be done in other way.

I really hope it's true since I'm living in China now - I'll definitely go to Korea one day anyway but I wouldn't mind a little OSL finals at home before that happens. :D
3) We all know what happened the last time Chinese Sources revealed something before a Korean Source did.
So no, highly doubt it.
what happened?
what incident occured last OSL? Something was mentioned on the previous page
When people were leaving the stadium, OSL only allowed them to leave in 2 lines for the shuttle bus (or single line). This frustrated many fans who were stuck inside the stadium or on the line.
For people that were able to walk home or take a different way to get home... they were still only allowing people to leave through the shuttle bus line.
This seems a bit crazy? (if its true) Yeah China has a big market, but how big is SC still in China? Not to mention this completely takes away Koreans from watching the Grand Finals live, unless they decide to fly to China. This is a giant risk hoping that the Chinese market is more receptive than the Korean market, while at the same time hopefully not offending the Korean market. Very risky move IMO.

NeoTV and PLU are the two companies responsible for basically all the broadcasting of BW events in China between the two of them, and having their two functional leaders come and announce this news does lend it credibility.

That's so sick. Hopefully this becomes a reality, because after WCG 2009, any esports in China would be insane. Hopefully they give the koreans discounts on their flight as well, though.

Yea way back in 2005, with Emlary, L2W and FireBlast!
i've been watching the chinese streams and all of this is just chatter, nothing official or endorsed, basically, the only thing these rumors has going for them is that the first OSL intro had effort half naked with wings standing on the oriental pearl.....then again the first korean air osl had flash standing in an airplane hanger.
But the logistics of having a korean sc final in china... especially at the oriental pearl doesnt seem very probable. What is more likely is maybe holding it at the world's expo in shanghai, the amount of people that go there is like 400,000 per day, and it has it's own stadium. This could be good for spreading esports, and if you want something to be big, you get chinese people to follow it, but then again, how is korean air planning on getting all the koreans over?

I hope this will prove to be some good advertisement for SC, the stage is big and finding possible investors/sponsors at the World Expo would most likely allow SC to survive SC2 very easily...
actually it could be a scheme by the korean air to sell tickets for starcraft fans to go to other countries to watch. not only they earn money off starcraft but airplane tickets too
I might be a bit off topic but I want to take Japanese boyband agent Johnny's as an example....It's all about business.
Johnny's have sent several popular boybands to hold concerts and fan meetings in Taiwan for years. How do they handle with domestic fans? They partner with tour agencies to form tour groups purely made up of loyal (plus rich) fans. Fans have to pay ridicilous amount of money to sign up for the tour compared to a normal 3 or 5-day trip to Taiawn. But they are willing to because some exclusive fan services are included in the tour package - separate meeting with boyband members, first served at signature meeting, front seats at concerts, etc..
I don't know either OGN or Korean Air has gone this far. But I won't be surpised if they finally bring the OSL final to Shanghai with an additional 737 or 747, full packed with crazy fangirls (or fanboys).
Whoah! teamliquid have to strengthen their bonds with china! is that wfbrood site also a community site? or is it more a company... maybe we should get some more cooperation going.

Agree. Especially because that rumor could make thousands of korean fans angry, OGN would definitely deny it straight-up if it wasn't true.
The only question that remains is if there has been a leak among OGN staff about this, how come it was published on chinese websites before korean blogs ? I assume the person responsible for the bookings of the Orient Tower spread the rumor.

If you have saw the WCG final held in Chengdu, China, then you can got the answer! There might be thousands of fans who would like to go to Shanghai in order to watch the OSL final.
Wow, this is going to be soo intense. But if the korean commentators are going, even if they're enthusiastic, then won't understand korean right? But they're probably going to use BW as the universal language. PLAGUUUUUUUUUU Damn i can't wait.

Another reason why this might happen could be the same as NATE MSL, where Flash and Jaedong were put in a separate room and only 700-1000 spectator could go watch it live in order to get more TV viewers.
I see some potential problems with this, the inside of the Oriental Pearl is TINY, theres no way it can hold a significant amount of people. ok so they hold the actual event in front of the tower in the open, but then one has to wonder what would happen if it starts pouring rain all of a sudden etc, and the urban layout in front of the tower isn't exactly ideal either, there are no long alleys where a giant screen can show the game to people standing way at the back etc [the surrounding area is mostly skyscrapers and elevated pedastrian walkways as far as I remember, so there's quite a bit of stuff to obstruct vision]. So unless they shutdown traffic at one of the main avenues leading towards the tower and use that as the site (in which case they would have to negotiate with the city itself), I don't see how the event can accommodate more than a couple thousand people at most.
yea i'm PRETTY SURE they're gonna host it aroudn the area and not right inside the tower. unless thyere planning to put only teh 2 dudes and camera crew inside lol.

damn it: i'll be in korea during that time. and just this damn finals isn't in korea? i'm pretty glad that i'm going to be able to attend the MSL finals though.
If they host the live event in china and thousands of koreans turn up will they commentate in korean or chineese?
if its korean then whats the point of being in china and if its in chineese then thats an even bigger "fuck you" to the fans who flew all the way to china just for the finals.
mabye they will hand out like 200,000 headsets and do dual laungage commentaries.

It is no doubt that there will be dual laugage commentaries.
I don't think the fans that watch the finals live hears the commentaries that we hear when we watch VODs. They just hear the hype before and after the matches.

they do actually
If so then I would think they would do dual language for the hype and not sure what language for the commentaries.

Probably have both commentaries on the scene, but only broadcast Korean back on TV and broadcast the Chinese to the crowd, which will presumably be mostly Chinese. I believe that's how it worked for WCG.
On August 14 2010 02:39 iloahz wrote: China's esports potential is just huge, it takes some action and some luck to transform that potential into the real thing.
There is a big hall at the first floor, you can put a few thousand people in there. But if they could do it in Lujiazui park, or any open space that would be great.
Why not just organize something in China where they will show the finals live on a giant projector with good chinese commentators. Flying the finalists all the way to China, away from the country with their biggest and most loyal fanbase doesn't make any sense. This will just piss off those Korean fans and there's a good chance they will get a smaller audience than the last final.
Chinese fans are no joke. Besides WCG, other tournaments held in China, have had great turn outs in audience attendees. China's eSports scene is growing and their StarCraft is WarCraft 3. They even have televised WC3 matches sometimes from Neo TV. It may piss off Korean fans back home, but I don't think the audience will be small at all in China.
wow fantasy and Jaedong flying to Shanghai, that'd be awesome cause my Grandma lives there =D I could show her that StarCraft is famous world wide and she'd stop flaming me for playing everytime I go to her house xD

I hope the event is to be held in open space or in a big ass stadium, not like, on the top of the tower that can contain a maximum of two players and two cameramen. I also expect record turnout if two of Jaedong/Flash/Stork trio are amongst the finalists.
And you know what's the best part? Chinese audience don't mind screaming like real fans do during climaxes, unlike the more conservative Koreans. Enthusiastic reaction from the audience is a part of a spectator sport and last year's WCG proved the Chinese are pretty damn good at it.
Surely Korean Air stands to benefit from this. Part of its revenue must be coming from its Chinese division.

People are asked to keep their voices down during matches due to problems in the past. MBCGame Hero Coach was complaining about this issue during Winnersleague/Round 4 this year when one of his players cheesed against Flash, and then Flash started looking for the proxied building after the audiences made some loud noises when they saw the cheese.
I'm guessing korean fans arnt to happy about this, although i think this is awesome for sc in general because sc in chinese will grow so much because of this

That got proven to be wrong after that game, the players are setup in enough soundproofing that it won't be a problem

Yet the problem still gets raised few times throughout the year. No one can really prove that the problem exists due to player's settings and different hearing abilities.

That was bullshit and can be seen in the replay. Flash was scouting the bottom area by 6 for proxies long before the obs moved there (which led to the audience's reaction). It was very convenient that Light didn't think it worth mentioning during the game (or any of the previous MBC players during that evening, who if Light was right, all had a large advantage from their 'flawed' booth).
There was however an incident in 2008 (again Light vs Flash) where Flash saw the audience waving (not heard). That was before MBC had raised booths though iirc.
Seriously, this is like hosting GSL offline qualifiers in Las Vegas, which everyone - hopefully - will agree is crap move.
Below: because I consider both to be illogical move as the events hosted should be focused on the home ground, but yeah, the sentence is also heavily dosed with my esoteric sense of humor.

It's the right move. Broodwar is plenty saturated in Korea. OGN doesn't need a lot of Korean fans to fly out, plenty of folks in China will probably fly to Shanghai to see it if they aren't there already. They could just do a "OSL special flight pack or whatever.
This could easily be the biggest esports final ever. If the final 2 are S-class players it could be a record that'll stand for years and years. The ground will quake from all the cheers.

KeSPA and Flash called it bullshit, but the problem was raised yet again.
The fact was, and still is, the question was raised, KeSPA re-stated that they ask the audiences to be quiet during the matches (works out 100% of the time eh?), and that possibly results in audiences being more quiet.

also
WCG: Los Angeles OSL: Shangai MSL: Yeoido Park
lol
lol so mean to MSL ! w/e yeoido park is stll a cool venue right? D:
How much of a live audience can the TV tower venue accommodate? If it's not that many I think it's a poor choice, reminds me of MSL's virtual studio, where fans couldn't watch live.
To expand the Chinese audience for OSL (and pro BW), I think it's a reasonable promotional move, but if there's no large crowd of Chinese fans, then the only benefit of hosting it in the Tower is simply PR in China. I wonder how much the Chinese broadcasting partner paid, though.
from what I read, there will be at least 1000 tickets. 300 people will be sitting. at least another 700 will be standing. but the area can hold lot more people, so more people without tickets should show up, they are just not in a good spot to watch the game.
300 seats for the OSL final?!?!?! This has got to be the smallest final ever!
Where did you get that info from?
They're holding it outdoors lol

We shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet, I have a feeling china won't disappoint. They have a lot riding on this, and its win-win for both parties for this final to be done as great as possible.
Um, everything I've read so far points to 300 tickets for seats, and some standing room, which can't be more than like 1000.
So yeah, all signs so far points to this being totally retarded. Fucking Chinese people -___-
Edit: Basically the reason people are speculating is that OGN really wanted it at the Oriental Pearl + World Expo, good for advertisement, but the World Expo management is strict as hell and it's impossible to get any kind of sizable event going there unless you're directly related to the government =\
Edit2: Also concerns involve 9/11 date + planes being involved. I blame SKT1 for this, if they weren't such pussies about the group selection we wouldn't have had this on 9/11 -___-
That sounds very strange. When they said Shanghai pearl tower, I asssume it was outdoors just next to the Tower which is a very popular place for big concerts. (there was the Live Earth concert in 2007, and some others).
See by yourself on the video, that's where a lot of big concerts take place in Shanghai, and it's just below the Pearl Tower. It will also be dark already when the OSL will start, so it's gonna look great with all the lighted up skyscrapers. Only the really huge concerts that need 70k seats take place in Shanghai stadium.
edit : we see very well on this video as well
Moving the OSL finals for 1000 people doesn't make any sense. Has anyone found a trustworthy source for this info ?

That's about where they're holding it, but for "security reasons," they're only allocating 300 seats + 200 reserved seats of official tickets with ~1000 standing room around on the steps just for people at the expo if nothing happens. Security or management or whatever reserve the right at any time to dissipate people.
SiTV/PLU stresses that it's at OGN/Korean Air's insistence that this is where it will be held lol. Apparently they proposed many much bigger venues and were all shot down. They really wanted Oriental Pearl I guess.

Err I meant to have the tower, sorry about tha. Dunno why I thought expo, probably cause of the recent STX event. Basically you just buy a ticket to the tower grounds and you go stand around the screen when the game starts.

Okay, thanks for the clarification !
It sucks though. You have to pay tickets but you can't even book them if they are just the regular tickets to the tower
The only good thing is that if there are only ~1000 people watching, I'll have more chance to sneak up to the players.
I'm trying to get a seat to this event through my school's Korean Student Union. Just knew about it yesterday(since I was in Japan for the last 2 weeks). This will be huge!! And for people that worry about the number of spectators. Dont!. There are hundreds of thousand of Korean here in Shanghai. In my college alone there are about 1000 Korean students!!!!

if there's only place for so little peoplei doubt being in shanghai is gonna do much good ;( damnit i rly wanna see it, but with only 1k ppl i guess it will be damn hard T_T
I'm planning to go (I'm in Beijing right now). The informations in this thread are sometimes conflicting, where do you buy tickets? Are they standard "Tower grounds" tickets like said earlier? That sounds strange because if so why would they give you a souvenir usb drive? More info needed please and if some other tlnetters go there from Beijing too let me know!
Edit: fuuuu I left my passport at the university so I can't take the plane, I'll have to go by train - can any chinese here confirm that you don't need to show your visa to take the train? :/
i can, about a year ago i went beijing - shanghai and iddnt need my passport....
although with the expo going on regulations MIGHT have changed... a few weeks ago i went qingdao - shanghai and didn't need my passport... a few months ago i went from hangzhou to shanghai and did need my passport, so i guess it's not really consistent.
I think you should be ok though...

Still very excited though :D
Came to the same conclusion. Very smart of Korean Air to make this move. They get alot of Chinese publicity for holding it in Shanghai and I would guess their Shangai-Seoul route is one of their higher volume international routes.
