The annual (actually pretty late this year) awards ceremony of Korean professional e-Sports scene will be held next Wednesday December 9 by KeSPA. It seems we can vote for our choices on the page after login but I think the results have been decided already. Not sure.
Calling it now. Best Map: Destination Best Rookie: Effort (Really, he's considered a rookie?) Best Coach: Park Yong Woon Best P: Bisu Best T: Flash Best Z: Jaedong Best Player: Jaedong
Why is this even a contest? Its completely objective
Best Player:Jaedong-Flash won nothing this year, Bisu won 1 SL this year(they count fall season as part of the 09 year, so this current season does not count) Best Z- JD Best P-Bisu Best T- Fantasy- best performance in SLs this year + clutch in PL grandfinals Best Coach- SKT coach by miles Best Map- Subjective choice between Andro and Desti Best Rookie- how the fuck is effort a rookie? Did they just put him in the award in order for him to win something
Why SKT coach? Just because their team won last PL? :-\. I think CJ's coach should definitely be in contention. Effort, Movie, and SkyHigh all were nurtured recently by CJ coaching staff. SKT on other hand has Fantasy/BeSt and neither is performing that well in PL. It's not 100% CJ > SKT coach, but I think it's definitely up for debate. Not just SKT1 autovote.
Here's my vote: Best map: None. lol I hate all these maps. Desti is such a turtle map. Sure wish Outsider was an option, coz that map is loads better. Best Rookie: Effort Best Coach: CJ Best Protoss: Bisu (Sad. But he deserves it. Better results than Stork for 2009.) Best Terran: Flash hands down. Best Zerg: JD hands down. Best Player: JD hands down.
My favorites. Best Map: Destination (That map is so balanced and always makes for interesting games) Best Rookie: Bogus - He is the only rookie on that list, and he is quite amazing as well. Best Coach: No idea. Best P: Stork (bisu, I'm very happy for you and imma let you finish, but this is easiest answer of all time) Best T: Flash/Fantasy, can't decide. Best Z: Jaedong, but I like Zero better. :S Best Player: Bisu, Stork, Flash, Fantasy and Jaedong all deserve to win, but Jaedong is gonna take it.

Did people just forget how comparatively mediocre Stork was doing in the first half of the year?
If this were the last 3 months, Stork would probably be the correct answer to this. As it stands, Bisu has performed far better in 2009 as a whole than Stork. Up until about a month ago, no one would even have considered Stork for this spot.

how so based on fall 08 to summer 09? what has flash done? Reach ro8 once or twice and get eliminated prematurely, fail at the end of the PL season to clutch his team into the playoffs, besides getting most wins in PL he has no other accomplishments. Remember GOM is not sanctioned and its games dont count so its irrelevant to the discussion here.
Fantasy has Clutched a 3-0 in the grand finals to secure his team's victory, without him you can easily make the case that Oz wouldve taken that finals Reached the finals of both OSLs while crushing Bisu 3-0 and barely losing to JD and Stork 2-3 in epic finals. He also reached the OSL semis last season
The only argument you can make is that Fantasy played worse than Flash in normal PL but considering he clutched when it mattered unlike Flash and took the MVP title on the final day he surpassed Flash in PL too + he also went 2-1 in WL playoffs( one of those wins was vs flash)
+ lets not forget he completely revolutionized a mu for 2 seasons, something Bisu can claim to do too + he had a stronger TvP than flash within the year

thats why I said JD for best player of the year? I had no reason to list his accomplishments because everyone knows them, just simply debutting his competitors, everyone knows JD is the greatest player right now, and everyone knows he took 2 OSLs and a Golden mouse this year

its more of poor wording that, like i said misinterpreted what you said. You make it sound more like flash and jaedong didn't win squat all year.
On second thought, there is no way to objectively give Flash the best terran award of Fantasy. Two OSL silvers and a Proleague title compared to no achievements at all except most proleague wins in 08-09 season.

Totally agree with this.
You guys must remember that the awards are not about who is the most skilled, but who accomplished more during the year.
Although samachking is incredibly harsh, he is correct... Except for the Clutch part. How can you say Flash is not clutch (better yet, how can he be)? He was THE one man show, unarguable. Don't say jaedong was a one man show, jaedong atleast had 1 reliable player besides him (not anymore though). Is it flash's fault that his team loses 1:3? If it is, does that mean Fantasy is a better player because his team can actually win stuff?
Remember GOM is not sanctioned and its games dont count so its irrelevant to the discussion here.
So this league doesn't "Magically" exist in the eyes of a fan? Even if you are correct nobody is going to discredit the fact that it happened. Yeah the judges might turn the other cheek for this league, but the fan votes will not, and fan votes does matter.
I don't know if Ruff intended that to be a joke or not, but he is 100% correct. E-Sports award is not a award show to mark the best player. Its just a fun event to please the fanbases and for all the players to feel satisfied of what they've achieved during the past year.
PS: I'm not saying Fantasy doesn't deserve Best Terran award, hell I don't think anyone disagrees with the fact that Fantasy did outpreform Flash in the beginning of 09 and the end of PL.
T1's coach so deserves best coach. When he took over the team after the 2007 season, T1 had fallen far from their Boxer-oov-era dominance. The team had been under the same head coach since its formation (those were some big shoes to fill). Park Yong Woon has managed to turn the organization around—helping its best players continue to improve while bringing up a lot of great new talent.
Best Map: I liked andromeda the most Best Rookie: Effort easily Best Coach: the coach on CJ did a fantastic job IMO this year and I think he should win. Best P: Bisu sadly. I usually autovote for stork, but bisu did play better this year Best T: Flash or Fantasy. Very very very close between them Best Z: Jaedong, bar none. Best Player: Jaedong
Judging a player by his team's performance is ridiculous. KTF's failure to make the playoffs was the fault of everybody except Flash. It boils down to this:
Flash did a lot more in the proleague than Fantasy. Fantasy did a lot more in the OSL than Flash.

Fantasy's 34 wins are worth something in PL + his 3-0 in grand finals means a lot
KTF's last hope in PL was destroyed by Flash that day, I saw it live, the burn out and crash of Flash that day vs STX, he had 2 chances to redeem his team and take them to the playoffs, and unfortunately he lost to Kal and Calm back to back.
I hate Fantasy and always rooted against him(unless he is facing Bisu) and was one of the people who always said Flash was a better player in theory. But how potentially good Flash is irrelevant, Fantasy was simply the better player this year and its hard to argue against it no matter how much you hate him or love Flash, he simply performed better where it mattered, something Flash hasnt done this year although he should've.
Yea the only thing interesting about this is who the upsets will be. Fantasy/Flash will be a good contest, but everyone can pretty much guess who the votes go to now.
How the hell isn't MBC's coach included? Look what he did to the team who finished 11th. Even as a biased KT fanboi I must say that he has got to be nominated for sure.

The seasons used for these events are fall of the previous year to the end of the summer of this year. Its weird, but if they wanted to do a proper ranking they'd do it after the fall season. So technically his good run this season does not count, only MBC's failure the previous PL year counts

This should only be concerning the 2008-2009 Proleague run and last two or three SL seasons though, so it's not really relevant.
If anyone could reaffirm me on this or not, but if I remember correctly, I read an interview about how Stork plays like a bunch of other games (and watches One Piece), because January doesn't really force them to play only Starcraft (or at least didn't for a while). It seems like he'd be a good nominee for the best player of all games (maybe Bisu, Flash, and Jaedong play more games, but I don't recall them saying in interviews that they play other games).

What kind of logic is that? Just because he plays WoW and watches anime, he gets some kind of bonus? What a load of BS. Best doesn't mean "he would perform better than everyone else if he worked as hard". Best means he performs better, period.
This is the exact same logic as people extrapolating up their iccup rankings.

It's only been one round. There's quite a bit left. Keep in mind that Fantasy's performance in R1 last year was pretty lackluster as well.

I think you misunderstood that particular award to mean best all-round gamer. That's not it at all. Remember, this is not a Starcraft-only awards ceremony but e-Sports. There are also non-Starcraft players nominated in this category (but not listed in the OP). I'm guessing most of the other players there would be SpecialForces players. Anyway, that award is meant to go to the best player (at their specialized game) amongst those. Obviously that can be hard to judge, but then again as was said before these aren't the most serious awards anyway.

Fantasy's performance in PL as a whole is lackluster, despite his finals performance. I'm just mentioning how Flash is doing better in PL and both leagues right now (well they're tied in OSL but Flash is the better shot to come out of his).
I'm sorry, but Stork has just been out performing Bisu lately hands down. I understand this is for the whole year, but off the top of my head I can't really think of that much that Bisu has done that Stork hasn't matched (not counting PL as that's a team victory). I mean, yeah, neither of them did much at the start but at least Stork's on his game NOW in the leagues where it's gonna count.

KeSPA rankings go back one year. It may not be perfect, but Flash has a good margin on Fantasy. More so with GOM, which I'm hesitant to include. Rankings are objective, maybe not accurate, but 100% objective.

You're talking about best T and not overall right?
Map: Destination Rookie: Effort - How can this one be disputed? He's been raping hard Coach: Park Yong Woon Protoss: Bisu - He may not be doing too hot now but a majority of 2009 was his stomping ground Terran: Flash - Not too sure since he wasn't doing that amazing for the majority of the year Zerg- Jaedong- No contest Best Player: Jaedong- Back to back osl wins? Seems like an easy choice here
From a fomos post. As far as I know, they consider results from April 08 to mid-November 09 (listed flash then fantasy) Individual Leagues: (flash bacchus win not included?) Ever 08: Ro8 v prelims Arena: Ro4 v Ro32 Incruit: Ro8 v silver Club day: Ro32 v Ro 32 Batoo: Ro16 v silver Lost saga: Ro16 v Ro32 Bacchus09: Ro16 v Ro4 Avalon: Ro16 v Ro16 Ever09: Ro16 in progress v Ro16 in progress Nate: Ro32 in progress v prelims
Proleague: 08: Most wins, MVP v nothing 08-09: most wins v finals MVP 08 winrate (after April): 17-8 (68%) v 1-4 (25%) 08-09 winrate: 54-19 (74%) v 35-24 (59%)
Head to head: Flash leads 3-2
The rest of that image is like winrates in 08 after April, 09, and in 08-09
I heard that proleague is given more weight, and I think I heard somewhere that Gom is actually considered in this so Flash has an individual league win So I think it's pretty clear that Flash should win
Here's a handy statistic for those that can't decide between Stork and Bisu for best protoss: Since September 1st, 2008 Stork's winning percentage is 59.86%, with 88 wins and 59 losses. In the same time frame, Bisu's winning percentage is 72.00% with 126 wins and 49 losses.
How is there even the slightest doubt that Bisu should be getting this award? I think that recent performances are weighing far too heavily on many people's minds. It's as if the past month completely erases the past year.

Not to mention the past month shouldn't even count. Just as the MBC coach's achievements count toward the 09-10 season, so do Stork's achievements. The award is supposed to be for the 08-09 season, and Stork wasn't showing signs of renewed dominance until WCG Korea, a month after proleague ended and just after MSL/OSL ended (even there he got soundly 2-0ed by Bisu).
On December 05 2009 11:47 nonduc wrote: In 08-09 season Stork won the Starleague.
So did Bisu, along with GOM (though that technically isn't counted by Kespa. Bisu also didn't slump as soon as the new year started.
Someone needs to do a Bisu v Stork chart in the style of the Flash v Fantasy chart.
EDIT:
Bisu --- Stork Ever08: Ro16 v Ro16 Arena: Ro32 v Prelims Incruit: Ro8 v Winner ClubDay: Winner v Ro8 Batoo: Ro4 v Ro8 Lost Saga: Prelims v Ro32 Bacchus: Ro16 v Ro16 Avalon: Ro8 v Ro32 Ever09: Prelims v Ro16 in Progress Nate: Ro32 v Ro32
Head-to-head, 3-3 (5-3 Bisu leads if WCG Korea is included)
Bisu has a convincing lead by the statistics. He's got the higher winrate, the head-to-head performance, and of the counted individual leagues, the better performance (if you count WCG and GOM, his individual league performance is far better). Even if you include Ever09 and the Nate MSL, Stork would have to make it to the Ro4 for you to even be able to consider his individual league to be comparable (and even then, there's still the huge disparity in their general win rates).
Bisu never won a Starleague. :D The Starleague =/= MSL. MSL isn’t Starleague, it’s MBCGame Starcraft League. (The Starleague is registered trademark of OnGameNet.)

I'm aware of that, but I also figured such a nitpicking distinction is outdated.

Flash really didnt deserve that at all, its completely unfair to Fantasy who played much better this year unlike Flash who was just riding recent hype and only played well in PL T__T. As much as I hate Fantasy that award was his and he deserved it.

Sure... until you realize that this is an award for all of 2009 and that Flash has only been great for the last few months whereas fantasy has been in 2 OSL finals. Not to mention JD has WON 2 osl finals. Pretty absurd statement that anyone other than JD deserves player of the year.

it's quite shocking how tall and imposing darkelf is when you look at sort of formal pictures but on videos where he's with xellos/hyungs he tries his best not to look large and to avoid attention to the point of meekness.

I'm pretty sure this is the best player of the last year, not the last 3 weeks. In that case there is almost no way you cannot vote Jaedong seeing how he has 2 titles, has gone deep in several other leagues, and single handedly pulled a mediocre proleague team to the finals and put them within 2 games of actually winning.
Most of these results were ridiculously predicable.

Agreed. I mean... Jaedong wins his first OSL win this year in a dramatic 0-2 comeback, on top of that his run later on this year was just untouchable. He goes really deep in the MSL, he carries his team all the way to the Grandfinals (Ultimately failing them), and of course he wins his golden mouse. All at the same time. And to add to that, he has been a PL monster all year round, and for a while his zvz comfortably sat at 80%. There's no question that he is the best player of 2009. Flash is breaking records right now, and he's been dominant for the past month and a half. But JD seems to be finding his groove, he's 3-0 in ace matches, has one of the highest number of wins in PL, and he swiftly 3-0s both his MSL and OSL groups. He is gonna bring something fierce in both leagues when it really counts.
Yup I guessed all right Its nice to see something like this is done for a computer game. When will rest the world adopt this kind of things? Maybe in 20-30 years from now? :sigh:

Agreed.
Jaedong vs Flash this season in a Bo5, whether it be OSL or MSL, would be true Starcraft brilliance, but there are so many things that could go wrong along the way. We really need to pray to see this happen.
