Normally I don't get time to produce more than 1 interview in a month and this time it's no different either. I kinda got fed up with the Korean answers all the time so I've decided to stick with someone more international and someone everyone is comfortable with.
My latest interview with a StarCraft pro-gamer is with Greg "IdrA" Fields.
Here's a sample as usual: + Show Spoiler + Name: Greg Fields Date of Birth: 8-21-89 Location: Seoul, South Korea Birth place: Michigan, USA Race: Terran ICCup Ladder Account: BenLinus First Strategy Game: Starcraft Siblings: One younger sister Blood type: Don't know Favorite Book: Couldnt choose a favorite Favorite Food: American style breakfast in general. Thats the one of the things I've missed the most in Korea. Rice and meat cannot compare to pancakes. Favorite Movie: Maybe Terminator 2? I have trouble choosing favorites for things like this. Favorite Model / Actress: I think Megan Fox is a very talented actress. Favorite Actor: Christian Bale Favorite Color: Blue Favorite unit: Science Vessel Favorite player: Nada Favorite CJ Entus Player: Iris There are about 10 additional pages on the link below! Props to IdrA for taking time out and answering my boring questions, but I hope you get to see another side to him. I'll probably interview someone non-Korean next until I can figure out if I should go back to the WeInterviewedFOX series for round 2! Till then, enjoy this one.
As usual feedback is appreciated.

Very nice interview... Enjoyed the read. Thanks yo!

very nice! but i wouldnt have thought that progaming teams are that much of a two class society.
ret to korea would be awsome!

Idra did his best, but man, you have to adjust during your interviews. Right now it seems you just have questions written down and you are throwing them at him. Probably could have even answered all those things via email. That's not an interview - it's a questionnaire. Things like race, name, etc. can all be researched and put into an introduction. That way you can start a conversation with the player and focus on getting interesting info (which you did, in a way) out of the player rather than just Q, A, Q, A, etc.
|
Idras perspective on dinOt - "lol"
I dont know why but that made me laugh so much. i really like idra despite the BM, thanks for the interview.
|
nice interview, enjoyed it!
|
Loved the interview and love you Elroy, gj as usual !
|
Idra fighting! Make us proud
|
Incontrol - Well he won a national championship by running lurkers up ramps and macroing badly until he could make ultralisks. Poor skew and artosis still cry themselves to sleep at night because of him.
lolol
Even though Idra is an angry nerd, he makes the SC-scene intresting.

|
Great interview with good questions and good answers. Thanks : )

Greg fighting Fuck the haters, kk!

Thanks for the interviews as usual, your interviews are the best. His comments on players were quite entertaining.

great interview, good job Liked his comments about other foreigners the most... like his comment on dinot
but one thing I found very funny: Reason to play T: "I enjoyed the challenge of playing the most difficult race. "
Later on, what made you switch from Z to T: "I played them zvt over and over, and I played a very lair focused, macro oriented style, and it just didn't work vs them because their macro was too good. I had always played terran vs zerg because I didn't like zerg vs zerg, so I gradually began to switch over entirely out of frustration."
hahahaha cuz of playing the most difficult race my ass!
|
Great interview! I really enjoyed reading this, thx Noname.
|
Nice interview!
But this kid certainly has aspergers
|
Good interview, tx. Laughed quite a bit with the commentaries on players. Go Idra! ^_^
|
Loved the part about incontrol
|
Very nice interview actually ^^
|
Didn't Idra say he made up the name Idra because his original name was Idran (an indian god) and that he just shortened it to fit his clan tag?

What is your daily routine as a pro-gamer? It changes once in a while but currently we wake up at 9:00 am, have two hours to wake up, eat breakfast, and shower, then practice from 11:00 till 3:00, then we have an hour for lunch, then practice from 4:00 till 9:00, an hour and a half for dinner, then practice till 1:30 am when we go to sleep for the night.
Holy pig, 12 hours of training. I'd rather die than practise THIS much. Where's your freetime and social life? This is insane.
Great interview!

Yes, but I imagine myself sitting there for 12 hours and playing Starcraft all day long. I think I'd go crazy. I'm basicly getting tired if a match takes more than 30 min, how are you supposed to play for 12 hours every freakin' day? They need to get rid of the PRACTICE-VERY-VERY-HARD-TO-WIN-MENTALITY. I'm sure players would appreciate it to have at least a few hours a week for themselves.

yeah that's some sick amount of training, i bet it actually ain't helping any to train too many hours..

Nice interview and i agree with most training 12 hours a day and showing basicly NO results i will quit so fast like any normal ppl do ( Draco, Nony ).
I cant imagine how it is to play 12 hours a day wow i got tired from like 1-2 hours max playing.
|
Great Interview, thanks !
|
"DinOt - lol" Ahahah interview too good
|
playing 12 hours a day is nothing(personally), and i love doing it. however, life intervenes obv. and + Show Spoiler + .. mostly

What he said.
The interview was huge, big props man.
Go Idra!
|
Great interview, nice to hear that he is honest on why he is BM instead of trying to excuse himself or defending his BM or denying them. Still though, if he didn't tilt so much he would probably be a better player.
|
so good. Great interview, and great player ! :D
|
Although he's not charismatic, his interviews are probably the most entertaining out of all foreigners.
|
im surprised for food he didn't say BM juice...lol
|
great interview, thanks.Idra fighting!

Yeah sick interview; ret to Korea for sure
Interview Mondragon next - find out his secret to ZvP :p

Very good interview. It looks like Greg isn't that angry-nerdy at all. When he wants, he can answer for a question well.
I'd like to hear what can he say about upcoming stars in Korean scene (like who's going to be the next bonjwa or smth), which progamers are slumping hard, how was it when sAvior went to B-Team and maybe some thoughts about latest games (ZvZ finals, Protosses slumping, Fantasy's era coming...). And, of course, how do the Koreans feel about WCG. For foreigners it's the most important tournament overall, and how does it look like for them?
|
Why did you select the nickname IdrA? Its just a made up word with no real meaning. Questioning the legitimacy of this interview. I remember in another similar question IdrA explained that his name was a shortened version of another word. Anyone care to elaborate or remember?
|
I seem to recall it being a mispelled Indian God Indra, but I don't remember which interview, exactly, I heard that in
I liked the part where he told us what he thought of foreign players. Incontrol and F91, lol

IIRC Idra wasn't on CJ yet when Savior got demoted and then promoted. And from interviews I've read some Koreans take WCG really seriously because if they win they'll be representing their country at a global level.

"dinot - lol"
what's wrong with dinot?
anyways, great interview

dinOt - "lol" LoL, did this interview was done BEFORE the highlander final ? ;D
Anyway, great interview, thanks !

He said in his GOM game against By.Trap that his name was originally some Indian demon Indrage or something but he misspelled it to start with by leaving out the "n," then when he joined a team he shortened it with to IdrA because it looked better with the tag. He then says it doesn't mean anything, consistent with this interview above.

Jaedong practices more than pretty much anyone else though, and I think the guys from samsung khan don't practice much more than 8 hours a day

Fun interview, especially reading the player descriptions of DinOt and InControl
|
lol they forgot to put makeup on his hands, the contrast is hilarious.
|
Wow that was an awesome interview. Idra if you want love you need to make answers like that ( no trash talk :D )
edit: well i missed Strelok / F91 / Dinot comments xD
|
I heard somewhere he was 23, now i read he's 19, what's his real age?

Lol IdrA's favorite actor is Christian Bale... Coincidence?

Nice, it is cool to have an interview with answers other than the ones koreans always give. Go idrA!

the training regime seems very acute. i think if Idra cuts the training amount in half every other week, giving him some time to suck fresh air, relax and think (not night clubs or drinking of course), he would show some nice results.
|
good interview , i dont like IdrA though
|
|
I think its funny how people can be considered bad for using "cheesy" strategies in strategy games. rofl
|
It's nice to hear Idra's perspective, makes him seem like less of a dick.
|
great interview. idra has some pretty interesting responses. lol @ dinot comment.
|
he was born in michigan? i'm from there, i wonder where in michigan.
|
Awesome article, good to see Idra giving some respect of a sort to different foreigners for once
|
IdrA seems to be a really smart guy. I enjoyed this interview a lot. Thank you!
|
This interview finally makes Idra come off as a real progamer with deep insight and some humility. Props.

I was out with artosis getting food at a mall and a group of teenage guys recognized me and came up and asked 'you CJ grek pields?' and asked for a picture and autograph and stuff. That was the first time I'd been recognized in public, away from my team or anything esports related. Was pretty cool and funny."
omg haha GREK PIELDS!

Idra actually just turned 20, I talked to him for a bit at blizzcon while he was just chillin watching peeps play in the pro gamer area. Very nice guy, of course we didn't talk too much cuz tasteless's bro was sayin some funny stuff haha.

I've always liked idra, ever since he left for Korea. Very good interview, and good luck to the Last White Hope lol

THE LAST WHITE HOPE... that's a sick nick name.
I can't wait till the day you show up in a PL game
|
I would cream my pants if IdrA showed up in PL. CJ should make it happen, the fans will go nuts
|
IdrA's a good guy. I really enjoyed watching him and incontrol get a long, even when incontrol was bashing him during the show matches. It was great fun and in order to give BM you gotta be able to take it, which IdrA can.
Took me like 45 seconds to figure out how to actually get to the interview... but after that it was pretty sweet
|
|
"Blood type: Don't know" lol

"F91 - The zerg strelok, but the style is more well suited for zerg since they have a spellcaster that makes them invincible. He just refuses to expand beyond a 3rd gas and waits for you to attack into his army, and if you wait too long he has defilers. Very irritating to play against but once you figure out his timings you cant lose to him. Unless he goes 3 hat hydra. Then god help you".

seems like a bit of a shallow choice
