So as this thread has been around now nearing 2 months: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=103660

I feel it necessary to update people.

The coaching has gone amazingly. I have had steady streams of students come through each week and I have had sessions with over 30 individuals. About a 3rd of which have repeated and about half of that have gone 3+.

I am going to school for an English degree with the intent of eventually becoming a HS teacher.. that is my passion: teaching. Having the combination of SCBW and teaching WHILE receiving critical money towards funding my life (food, bills, car, school etc..) has been an amazing opportunity. On top of that, the cliche "I learn just as much from them" that you often hear teachers say, is actually REALLY true. No joke. I have worked out and refined timings and general macro with my Zerg that I probably never would have figured out had I not been doing the same openings for 2 hours at a time with students. I can honestly say that I am a better player due to this endeavor.

Beyond personal gain through monetary means or grinding practice.. I have also experienced the gift of giving. Another cliche but again, a true one! The feeling of seeing that light bulb click or having a student go "OOOOHH ok.. I get it" is indescribable. I get so elated after a strong session that it really powers the rest of my day. This game has taken me all over the world and has given me tremendous experiences, to be able to teach some of what I know to others is a real satisfying feeling.

Also I have to laugh because it has made me a different poster on TL. I realized, one day, when I was reading a blog about someone going off on another TL member in a ICCUP ladder game that I should probably not flame him. So I didn't.. ironically, THAT DAY the guilty poster PM'd me asking for lessons. I guess a part of the maturing cycle is realizing there is more to be gained from being nice than mean.. I know I know.. coulda learned that a long time ago but we all get there in different ways, or don't (sup charlie).

In conclusion to this rambling blog I just want to thank everyone. There has been tremendous support throughout this and it has been really refreshing. Some were skeptical at the beginning (understandably) but I hope it is well established now that I am not a scammer and I am in fact dedicated to giving you a worthwhile session.

As always I am accepting new students and my schedule is more open than ever as I am on Xmas break. Drop me a PM or post in that thread (or this one I suppose) and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

wow nice work geoff, Im happy to see people actually try and help others even if its paid for. Anyhow I would love to do a session with you but im more of the old fashion saying that a better player comes with more practice so ye I think playing 300 games straight on iccup would improve a player.We used to have so many topics here about how someone can improve his play but now we have you and am happy another zerg has improved and is in the top16 TSL.

ps: post some replays of you beating that A- ZvT korean it was a 22 minute game so I guess its worth watching?
Terran in particular is a notoriously strong race for a no brain skillhand bot style.

Mass gaming certainly helps and is a great way to improve. However, mass gaming without direction can have limits. It isn't like boxer came out of a hole and suddenly was good. He gamed with other intelligent players and they worked on timings, strategies and tactics.. for people that don't have access to someone with any kind of good understanding I represent an opportunity for a small fee.

Mass gaming is good. Being taught is good. Doing both is best.

That is my philosophy

PS: As for the reps they will all be released should I make top 48 so you will just have to wait

Ye its true of what u say but if you happen to have played with other good people (for example I was gaming with sataNik) then you get an idea of how everything works and then you can self-evaluate urself by watching your replays, what u did wrong etc. People dont usually watch over their own replays but replays from gosus trying to adapt to them, I watch both with the same passion and focus. Anyhow enough with my bla bla bla bla which is common sense I believe. I really appreciate you more as a person with the effort you make and with helping the community It really needs lot of patience the thing ur doing now. so gz man. and im sure ull make top 48... u shouldnt even think u wouldnt lol.

Awesome to hear you doing well with it. I like the feeling you described of teaching as well, it really does feel good to have someone learn from you and understand. I love teaching SC when I can, but it's not very often.
If you watch Godzilla backwards it's about a benevolent lizard who helps rebuild a city and then moonwalks into the ocean.

On average, what kind of students take lessons with you? Are they highly skilled or low skilled?

i helped my buddy with his 12 nexus on python vs a 2 fact, where it is actually a map where 2 fact can pressure a 12 nex (on a map like katrina, i don't think he'd be worried about it), and I can honestly say that i can joyo rush really well now, and i don't play t. i see what you're saying with the repetition of doing an opening over and over. I would definitely invest if I had the cash, as you seem to be one of the most mannered and nice people in the community.

maybe i could send u payment via mail? like i shouldnt say i dont have the cash... i have cash... i just don't have nor trust myself with credit cards

Inc i must say that i'm kinda impressed with your TSL match list. I didn't know you were in such a good shape atm, as you said it seems that being really active with all those coaching sessions also helped you to get better. Now if i had to remake my top 16 i think i would give you a spot.

Anyway gl with the R1/R2/R3 and life

HS kids are monsters if they smell weakness. Two of my friends tried teaching only to quit after 1 and 2 years (after getting the undergrad degrees + masters in teaching) being abused by bratty kids. It can be done of course, but be prepared for rough stretches and some drama.

The average student is somewhere between D and C- with most being D+ or so. I have helped a few though that are B rank and a couple that are C+ but the vast majority are around D+

The amount of benefit is unscientific.. in that it highly depends on the problems with the students game and how well they take to coaching. So far the results have been good but for some it has been better.

That's so cool! I want to be a teacher, but I'm still a bit young for that.

But I'm glad things are working for you! I wish I could get some teaching, but I don' have the cash to dish out.
