Has anyone read the book Hacking: The Art of Exploitation? I'm having trouble running the Live CD that came with it, so I tried to torrent it, burn it, then run it, but that didn't work either. And then I tried to run it via a virtual machine running ubuntu, but that didn't work either (maybe because the VM is too slow)... If anyone could help me and/or share their experiences with it, that'd be great.

This is the book: http://www.amazon.com/Hacking-Art-Exploitation-Jon-Erickson/dp/1593271441

its a liveCD so you just boot from your cd. Setup a VM to mount your cd drive or ISO and then give it boot priority over your VM hard disk.

Yes, I did this, and it gave me some memory allocation error. It still "booted" (got me to the first menu), but didn't work.

try giving your VM more ram at least 512.

I first tried booting it off of my own computer as well, so RAM shouldn't be the problem. Also, I have the default memory allocated the the VM as 512 already.

What OS is it a Live CD of?

You said you checked the VM to mount from the CD drive, but did you try this with your BIOS so you can run it off the regular computer?

Yeah that was the first thing I tried, sorry if it wasn't clear in the OP. As to your first question, it's supposed to be a Linux environment.

I wouldn't buy books with titles such as those.

Possibly the CD is corrupt (or this is your first challenge, to get the thing working! ).

Anyways if you can't end up getting the thing working then you may just be able to download whatever linux flavor it is off the internet and go from there, but it seems like you tried something like that already. If you already have Ubuntu running it may not matter that much unless the Live CD had pentesting software pre-downloaded for you.

Also check out Backtrack 4, it's a pentesting flavor of Linux based off of Ubuntu that comes with something like 300+ pentesting tools.

The book itself is actually really good. The CD just provides some "hands on" stuff, which you typically need when learning anything with computers.

The thing is, the book uses examples from the CD, so you're supposed to "follow along" as you read. It's not so much pen testing as learning how code works at a lower level, like assembly. So it would really nice if I could get the actual CD to work.

Could you provide a little more background info? What native OS are you running? You said you have Ubuntu running in a virtual machine, or was that your native OS? You don't know exactly what's on the CD, does the book tell you?

I read the first edition of that book like 5-6 years ago, I think. Don't recall it having a CD though. Pretty decent book though, regardless of what the title may make it sound like.

I'm running Vista. According the the book,
The bootable LiveCD provides a Linux-based hacking environment that is preconfigured for programming, debugging, manipulating network traffic, and cracking encryption. It contains all the source code and applications used in the book. Hacking is about discovery and innovation, and with this LiveCD you can instantly follow along with the book's examples and explore your own.
The LiveCD can be used in most common personal computers without installing a new operating system or modifying the computer's current setup. System requirements are an x86-based PC with at least 64MD of system memory and a BIOS that is configured to boot from a CD-ROM.

When trying to boot from the VM, it gets stuck on a "Loading, please wait..." message.

Stuck? How long have you waited? It may take quite some time to load all the stuff it will need into memory.

I waited maybe 15-30 minutes. Not sure exactly . VMs are so convenient, but incredibly slow...

Did anyone ever find a fix for this as I have the same or similar problem? I have tried the CD as live on my host OS but after the first menu choice it errors out to a command line. I have tried it as a live CD in VB but this time after the first menu it just sits there with a black screen and flashing cursor. I have also tried the torrent as given on the books website but this also does the same black screen in VB. Am I doing something daft or is this a known problem? THanks

It's an old thread, but to solve the "Loading, please wait" screen on VirtualBox try to do this (I am running Win 8.1):
>>run cmd (Command Prompt) as Administrator
>>enter this command without quotes "bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off"
>>reboot your pc

This command turns off Hyper-V in Windows, you can google on that.
