Recently, my 10 year old brother has been hooked on Starcraft after watching me play a bit. I don't play that much but nevertheless he seems to play with his 13 year old cousins non-stop. Of course, the fact he plays a lot isn't the issue.
A few days ago he asked me to join iCCup so he could play online against other people.. I was surprised he knew how it all worked but anyway I set him up and he went about playing games. We both play terran so it was good to see him get some experience. However it is really sad since he always looses really easily (he is 10). So in order to help him out and give him confidence, I told him to switch to Protoss and DT rush. So far he's been doing well but now all he does is play Protoss and DT rush everytime.. was this a bad idea?
No. You got him started on the right track for beginners. When he's ready to actually start learning real builds and how the game works, he'll find the race that fits him.
Nah.. he might be the toss version of BaBy in the near future? jk Well if it isn't broke, don't fix it ofc you're gonna have to tell him to learn something else later on down the road haha
yeah I'm going to try to get him to work on his mechanics more.. for instance he uses a laptop touchpad instead of a mouse (says it is easier for him, course he doesnt know any better) and doesn't use hotkeys and he is still able to get away with it.
Nah, don't worry. As he gets older and can't get past D he'll go to you for advice on how to improve... at that point you can teach him mechanics and stuff. He's ten, all he should be able to do is dt rush at this point.
I think you made the right choice, as this will probably prevent him from getting discouraged if he lost every game. Also, I wonder if I just lost to a ten year old...

did he DT rush you with only 6~7 probes on the mineral line? if so, you have your kid

a touchpad? LOL, and he wins? that's awesome (i shouldn't lol too hard, id probably lose to him -_-)
but yeah, eventually if he likes sc enough he'll want to get past D so he'll be forced to learn everything else.
You are GOOD for showing him a way to victory and giving him a new way to enjoy the game
I hope that if he actually does have a passion for the game, he'll try hard to improve other aspects of his game when he realizes his 6 probe dt rush isn't working any more. But I definitely don't think this is a bad thing
At the very least, he's seen you play, so he knows he ,can go to you to ask questions, so for example, if he asks you why his dt rush is no longer working, you can either get him to dt rush better or get a new strategy, either way he will work on his mechanics/builds
if he asks you why his dt rush is no longer working, you can either get him to dt rush better...
oh boy oh boy!
haha
Well thanks for the kind words guys, I'll teach him some of the protoss basics to see if he likes it/help improve the mechanics. He did ask me the other day to help him get better. I'll probably pick up playing on iCCup again so I can get better myself (if it wasn't for hotkeys/keeping money low, I may not be much better than he is)
