Since SC went down today I've decided to blow the dust off my old Half-Life 2 disks and install them on my laptop. I'm writing this as my steam and everything updates. I played it for a bit on my desktop along with a little CS:S here and there, but never really played either for more then 10 hours in their entirety. It's a fun change of pace compared to starcraft all day long.
So now I've gotten into FPS a little bit more and am wanting a new game. I'm thinking either Fallout 3 or Left 4 Dead with a lean toward Fallout 3. What do you guys recommend? Can you play both of them online?
Also do you have any tips for me for HL2 or CS:S?

Left 4 Dead for sure.
Fallout 3 is nice, but certain parts didn't sit well with me, like how you could "accidentally" finish the story, and some of the aspects of the older games they dumped (of course, those don't matter if you haven't played them).

I've played both on 360, I would say Fallout 3 if you're looking to play a lot of it, since it wont get old as fast as Left 4 Dead, but if you're just looking for a fun game to play until SC goes back up I'd go with L4D

fallout 3 was a really cool game, with a huge environment, and alot of player choices. I would recommend it for sure

Call of Duty more fun IMO, Like a lot better Fallout, is just such a awesome game ^^. Yeah i bet half of the people here don't only play SC or Blizz Games.

Quake Live - get it!
Between Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead, I'd go with Left 4 Dead. L4D is more fun since it's online, especially if you can get some buddies to play with you. I thought Fallout 3 was too slow paced and open. Couldn't really get into it.
CS is pretty difficult to get good at, especially if you're coming from an RTS only background. If you really want to get good at it, visit Gotfrag.com and download some replays/demos and watch them.

Yeah I was playing CSS earlier and getting owned... I can imagine like SC, and most other games, it takes a long time to get decent at.

Don't listen to these ragamuffins here.
Get ARMA II. The most realistic amazing war experience there is outside of actual combat. You won't be disappointed. Take a look at some of the gameplay trailers, user videos, etc. before you decide if its for you. It blows away CS, CoD, and L4D by far.

Fallout 3 was easy even for non-competitive gamers. It wasn't thrilling and it could only pretend to be a shooter. It did, however, have the uncanny propensity to steal your soul. If you've played Oblivion, that should give you a taste of what Fallout 3 has to offer. Play L4D.

What about old classic PC games?

half life would be good as an old classic, if anyone hasn't yet finished it.
