Not really a fan of his show on HBO, but the trailer for this documentary had intrigued me.

Bill Maher travels around and confronts the religious and spiritual with arguments against their faith. This movie has a different sort of parodying than a similar themed documentary "Jesus Camp". It's quite funny and worth a view for those with two hours to spare.

Religulous

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3791007322683758535&hl=en

Jesus Camp
I'll include a link to Jesus Camp, but keep in mind it is not much of a comedy and is quite depressing.

http://www.viddler.com/explore/MrDocu/videos/3/

I don't want this thread to turn into a theistic or atheistic circle-jerk. If you do post, try to avoid preaching to the choir.

I highly recommend this. It's hilarious and exposes a lot of what religion "has to offer".

Jesus camp was more scary honestly than funny. Although it was a good watch.

I'm really fucking surprised google video has the entire movie, in 1 whole video too not split into a thousand small parts.

what about eastern religions? they are extremely old (like hinduism). Then according to this means all of that is fake... yet they are finding evidence that some of the major religion's stories are true O_O. Maybe the stories are the true, but then some high authorities added some bs for more money or control or something.

I thought Religulous would be painful to watch for me. For the most part, when I see people talk about atheism, I feel embarrassed for them. I agree with them, but I still almost always end up thinking they're really stupid. A similar thing happens when I hear someone say "correlation does not imply causation."

But anyways, I ended up finding it very enjoyable to watch, so maybe that means everyone can enjoy it no matter their beliefs.

It's been a few years since I saw Jesus Camp, but I remember it bumming me out pretty hard. I think this documentary is in the same vein: The Most Hated Family in America.

Im watching jesus camp and its disturbing me. Everytime it lets the children talk it just seems their staring into the wall brainwashed talking non-stop christian beliefs. Not saying christianity is bad but THAT much religion is bad imo. Their not even allowed to have their own beliefs :/

Maher's a douche. Would I ignore a message because of the messenger? Yes, yes I would.

Might check out Jesus Camp though.

wait you don't know any religious people? try saying the bible is a fairytale at work or school.

and the 'HEY SOMEONE AGREES WITH ME' reaction is not one most anyone will find, the "haha that is hilarious, pathetic, depressing and revolting" reaction is more along the lines of normality.

I used to be catholic and was happy knowing that Catholicism is the most "sane" religion in how it accepts most science and has gone back on it's word about some many things. A few years ago I realized how the only reason I kept considering myself a Catholic though was that I was just afraid to think about how there isn't a god. It's scary, but eventually everyone has to face it.

yeah I just watched jesus camp.. was pretty powerful.

unobtrusive documentaries that tell a story through interview and seemingly unaltered events tend to be most persuasive imo.

I liked it a lot.. was scary to see that side of evangelical Christianity down south.

If you are going to follow a religion you should probably be pretty hardcore about it. I hate seeing all the hypocritical kids that claim to be god loving and go out and do drugs, have sex, or any other sinful act.

I don't give a shit if people do any of those things of course, but I have more respect for religious freaks than those that treat important elements of their religion as things that they only follow if they want to. Or claim that it no longer applys in todays world. If you truly believe that everyone goes to hell if they do not follow your religion you sure as fuck should be giving it your all to convert them.

I'd rather people be religious when it's convenient, and rational when it's important. If nothing else, they will be happier people that way.

Like the "ex-Mormons" in the video said, it's more because leaving their religion is social suicide, than them actually believing everything. That was Bill's whole point. They put up a tough look on the outside, but within them they know it's not logical. Maybe that's not true with everyone, but certainly with young teenagers who are starting not to believe everything, and who are maybe interacting with people who aren't religious as well.

Wow, that "Most Hated Family in the Country" movie was pretty bad, they do indeed have the right to picket and such, but at the funerals of fallen soldiers!?

I've known about these guys for quite a while though, through DDoS attacks launched by 4Chan.
Tear stained american saints and dirty guitar dreams across a universe of desert and blue sky , gas station coffee love letters and two dollar pistol kisses from thirty five dollar hotel room stationary .

Skip all the parts with Maher preaching monologue style and you still have the best parts of the film. Some of the people he talks to are a riot, especially Mark Pryor, as was said previously.

Oh shit just watched Jesus Camp. Fuck my sister just came back from 1 year usa as an exchange student and her host family were some religious stoneage people teaching their kids creationism and to hate gays, and she told me how her host mother cheered when some local doctor who did abortions got shot to death.
Fuck this, I'm so happy my sister is back in a place that is past the Age of Enlightenment...
