So recently i made a blog for myself on wordpress, then i switched to a custom domain because it gave a lot more possibilities to me. I like writing and when my english does not suck, i consider myself to be a bit better than an average writer. So i had this idea of a starcraft blog, i have worked on websites and graphics for a lot of time now and i could make the blog/site look very nice but i would need some talented writers who like to share theire opinion about everything related to starcraft with other people (who read the blog).
Anyways, i'm in serious doubt if i should start the blog (well its not like a typical blog, more like a news site or a limited community or something similar) because im not known at all in starcraft community and i doubt that i will succeed at getting people to read it.
So the plan is: first i have to recruit some rather talented writers to write new posts regarding any news in starcraft, battle reports about recent games and maybe just write theire personal opinions on recent happenings in the scene. Second, i have to get a great looking theme and add a lot to the site to make it interactive and not boring for the visitors. Third, i have to advertise and get people to visit the site.
So my question is: Will it fail or is it a good idea? And dont flame me please because i know there are a lot of newswriters and stuff in the scene already, this is something slightly diffirent.
Oh and by the way the adress will look like this http://starcraft.isgreat.org (nothing there at the moment)
Bonus: An amateurish 5-min photomanip with JD and Flash (lets all pretend flash's TvZ doesn't suck)

Nice poster but I think if the goal of your blog is to talk about starcraft news and recent games TL already covers those topics....

Yeah, i thought of that too so im thinking of making it diffirent somehow but i haven't got any ideas not, the blog'ish format and articles will be diffirent though so its not exactly the same.

I wish you good luck on this, although somehow i doubt you'll be able to distinguish yourself among the 100,000+ starcraft news sites already floating around the internet. Waste of money for server hosting imo.

I think you could experience personal satisfaction and pleasure just writing for TL and contributing here. Guaranteed at least 500 views, people always comment, and if you're good, you'll get much more.
Starting your own news site is... I dunno. Unless you really have unique plans you can't do here at TL, or you want to make money... Sounds silly to me.

Okay well im not going to do it then, thanks for the advice everyone. (let the blog die now)

Tbh your idea sounds exactly like any other niche news site that wants hits. It's a pretty set formula, 1) You write something that people can't get anywhere else, and 2) they come to your site. The hard part is #1. Plus, your idea is basically TeamLiquid.net -- you need to come up with something that already doesn't exist.
It's really easy to come up with an idea. I mean, I have an idea to make TL the Ongamenet of America, here is my plan:
1. Get a lucrative sponsorship offer from huge companies like Intel and Microsoft. 2. Build a television studio and TL office in New York City. 3. Profit from massive television ratings. 4. Swim in a massive swimming pool filled with money.
Will this fail or is this a good idea?

It's generally not a good idea to be so controlling you need your own site just so you can pull the strings either. New sites should be created out of necessity. TL is already a fantastic base for anyone who wants to write about StarCraft. I wasn't trying to say they were wise reasons, just that I couldn't really think of any others.

You say your strong point is writing, but then you say you need writers. If you have nothing to add of your own, i think it will fail.

Well, I think it is somewhat of an exaggeration to say that having a new website with a similar purpose is an automatic failure. People like having more options regardless of the field since they have their own preferences. That is the reason why several newspapers, television stations, StarCraft Leagues etc. exist at any given time. Having said that, it is true that it is hard to succeed if you do not try to make yourself different.
I think the problem with your idea lies less with the purpose then it does in the fact that it is unrefined. You mentioned you wanted to make a "StarCraft news site", but that in itself is rather vague since websites have a tendency to report on different things. You can already see that just by looking at the already present StarCraft news websites. TeamLiquid is the place to be for news on the Korean proscene, GosuGamers offers news on the foreigner scene, BroodWarMaps reports on mapmaking, SCLegacy often reports about the latest StarCraft novels and mangas etc.
If you want to pursue this, you will have to have a more clear idea on what exactly you want to do.
