Question about SC at school

So with APUSH being over and stuff, me and some other kids in my class were talking about playing SC at school these last two weeks during APUSH. None of them really play competitively (I don't think any of them have watched any competitive SC at all) but that's besides the point.

If I was to play online during class (since we're doing absolutely nothing), would it be easy for my school to catch me? What if we played on a LAN at school?

I think my school does tend to be somewhat strict but I dunno really, I've heard stories but I'm not too sure.

Oh, and this is all on a flash drive (124 MB) by the way, I'm not gonna bring the CD's and play, that'd be dumb.

Clarifying: By "getting in trouble", I mean by like the administrators, or whoever monitors the internet. I know to alt tab when my teacher walks by (even though chances are he won't care, he'll be playing RIsk) but I dunno if I would easily get caught by like the filter and stuff. We each have numbers that we log in with, and I'm not sure what the admin password for my laptop in the classroom is.

um, as long as they don't see you guys I don't know how they would ever find out. Why would they care anyways?

Yeah but I think you get banned from the internet at school for like a year and I'm a junior.

Like, the internet filter. They have the capability to block sites so I would assume they can monitor what we're doing on the internet, etc.

It's possible that the school's network only allows access through port 8080, so it will allow web browsing, but all other ports (i.e. the ones starcraft uses) are blocked - so you won't actually be able to connect to BattleNet. You may be able to play your friends over UDP, or that may be blocked as well.

Might as well give it a try.

At my school we basically just used a flash drive and put it on our home drive things on your little file things that we log onto to do work on and stuff.... don't know if i said that right, anyway we all usually just go on the LAN connection when were done all our work and stuff usually we ask the teacher to go on the computers at the back of the room but its the last year for us so we pretty much just do it any time, as for getting in trouble for it as long as your either doing it when there's nothing going on in class or your done your work/ ask i don't see why they would go to the trouble of making a big deal out of it, and if your doing it when your not supposed to just Alt tab out or some shit when you see them coming

Are you in a computer lab during class? What's the deal?

lol, the most trouble you would get in is them telling you that you cant play it. When I was in high school I installed soldier of fortune on like 10 machines in the computer lab and we would play during class. It was fun hunting down the people who were alt tabbed and kill them.

At my school, we have laptops, and I play my friends over the UDP connection... pausing + alt-tab is your friend if you don't want to get caught then...

At our school we use laptops (our school is trying to implement technology) for social studies classes. The class I would be doing this in is (AP) US History, and since we took our exam on Friday we're done and we aren't doing anything these next two weeks.

Installing it / playing it single player is not what I'm afraid of, I won't get caught that way and if I did, my teacher wouldn't care. I'm just not sure if I could get caught if say I got on Battle.Net or iCCup during school, or if I even played on a LAN with others from my class.

Sorry for being so confusing everyone, I'm not the best at LAN / Internet stuff so yeah. :p

When i was in high school, after AP tests we wouldnt even have class. i doubt your teacher would care if you guys played SC in class. Its the end of the year, fuck it and just play.

dude once i was done with my ap comp sci test all my class did was play aoe2 for the entire freaking month. I turned those scrubs into players...sniff* I was so proud. Yet I still beat them all till the very end. Just ask your teacher if it would be cool.
no you wouldnt get caught playing online and I doubt the admins would care if they somehow did catch you.
yes.

My district has people monitoring the internet, but it can't monitor individual computer screens. My friends and I use the LAN ( UDP ) option of battlenet so there's no way we can be caught. We're essentially using the school's LAN. This way we're not doing anything illegal either (we signed a form that said we would not use the internet for games, but we're using our flash drives + lan).

A guy I knew found out the hidden school network name. They caught him somehow because he logged on to his email (from his iphone).

However, that was actually accessing the internet from his own device. If you play by LAN (me and my friends play SC by LAN all the time), they can't catch you.

Just because they can doesn't mean they'd care enough to do so. Why would they care so much to constantly watch your traffic?

That's a good question and who knows if they would be. I'm definitely paranoid about it, but I mean taking a risk is taking a risk.

Anyways thanks for the posts everyone! It sounds like going with the LAN is perfectly safe so I'll do that, and if I get bored of that I might try to jump on BNET and show people what Starcraft can really be like (I mean that in the way of like actual competitive Starcraft, not me being good cause that's false ). I'm hoping to get some of them into this game.. thanks again!

I would never be able to download and play games at my school computers. However, we are doing nothing in AP Euro now.

No they cant catch you unless you install something on the network drives or if they notice you taking up a lot of bandwidth i think

My friends and I randomly play in the computer lab during classes (that we're skipping) and the comp sci teacher doesn't even care haha. Seniors + end of the year ftw

It all depends on you teacher. If she's a bitch, then don't do it. If she's lax, then do it. If she's somewhere in between, then subtly do it.

They can't monitor every computer to that degree, it would cause too much data traffic.

What WOULD set things off is if you had enormous amounts of data going only to your pc. However, SC never lagged anyone on dialup back in the day, so it wouldn't be suspicious.

That being said, I've been doing it for years. From high school into college (I've got multiple thumbdrives). Theres no point in playing online however, you can't get port forwarding to work so your best bet is to play on LAN or online by yourself.

Haha. My final for AP Comp Sci during first semester was to participate in one of the following activities: Counter Strike, Starcraft, Halo, Playstation 2 (dunno what game), or Star Wars Jedi Knight. Unfortunately, administrators caught on. Second semester we had to actually do work and the subsequent year, the class was canceled.

Best class ever.
