This was something I was thinking about posting for some time now, but it never really seemed interesting enough.

I love to read old TLFEs/article because they are the single best source of SC history. Reading a story in someone's own words rather than just the hard facts of who wins really helps get a good picture. Since I was never around for pretty much any of this it helps me learn about old favorites and such.

But this isn't really about any player in particular. One article I read was about the Iris/Savior series in the OSL (Shinhan 3 I believe). A particular quote struck me:

This game was for everything. Top four doesn't matter in OGN history, nobody remembers or cares. The fate of both players rested on this final game, and it was a game that will go down as one of the greatest ever.

It was quite the amazing game and all, but I'd like to focus more on the second sentence. Often times when I think about a league, I tend to associate it with its finals. Unless something really extreme or interesting happened, a good finals was a good Starleague and a bad finals is just something that people forget about by the time the next season rolls around.

Or at least that's what I thought. Plexa sure has a way with words. The recent OSL summary draws tons of overall meaning from the league which was very intriguing to read and got me thinking about old tournaments. The problem is that I wasn't there for any of them. I started really following SC around the time Club Day hit RO 16, but it's really hard to care about most of the winners when you know next to nothing about them.

Anyway, all this leads up to my real main question:

What OSL/MSL/GOM/Proleague/Whatever is known for something more than it's known for its finals? Were there any particularly important "turning points" in SC history that didn't happen in a final?

Well to me, I get pissed off and feel more emotional every time Flash loses in like RO16 to some random cheese.

Oh and I'm pretty sure every firebathero ceremony was a good turning point, dunno how often he does it outside of an important match or a final

the biggest part of incruit OSL was probably stork beating best in the semis IMO

the highlights in the lost saga MSL was prob savior making it to the Ro8 and the group of death in the Ro32 (also nada vs Jangbi in Ro8), the semi's and finals were total snore-fests compared to those and no one will care that luxury beat jangbi in the finals a year from now.

I believe July's win over Oov when July broke out was in the semis (Gilette?). I believe the final was July/Reach, yet everyone talks about how July mauled Oov

Oh man I totally forgot about EVER 04. Although I suppose when the final four players are Boxer, oov, Reach, and Yellow, something crazy is bound to happen.

I remember the Jaedong vs Flash series the most in 2008 Bacchus OSL. Flash used his mech build to beat Jaedong.
Oracle comes in, Scvs go down, never a miscommunication.

I had to watch that game twice because I couldn't comprehend how Joyo lost.

Yeah, Reach's Uzoo MSL run was the stuff of legends, even if he didn't win the whole thing. Plus it was Savior's first gold, wasn't it?

Julyzerg's Royal Road Osl.
Stomping the top Terrans to oblivion (including stopping Oov's 27 streak vZ) and topped it off with a nice Reach cherry.

http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/details.php?type=leagues&id=81&part=games&matchup=TvZ&from_year=2004&from_month=4&from_day=30&to_year=2004&to_month=7&to_day=31&action=Update#tblt-2814-1-3-ASC-July

Also beating Boxer to get into the OSL.

Reach v Oov Semifinals from Ever 2004. The first time anyone was able to stand toe to toe with oov in a pure macro game. Would probably have been the most memorable part of that OSL if the finals hadn't been the greatest finals ever.

Boxer v Pusan Semifinals from So1 2005. Mindblowing comeback by Boxer, with his notoriously poor TvP against the guy widely considered the best PvTer at the time. Again, overshadowed by an amazing final, but still widely remembered.

The Hwasin v Savior semifinals from GOM MSL 1 (infamous Bisu > Savior) was another case of a great semi overshadowed by a final. Hwasin pushed the maestro, albeit on fairly imbalanced maps, almost to the limit and it was quite the buzz between the semis and the final. If Savior had won as planned, this almost certainly would have been the most memorable part of the starleague.

2006's Pringles MSL S2 was probably best remembered not for the finals, but for the Nal_rA v Savior game on Peaks of Baekdu.

As for your quote in the OP, I think it's a little funny that the sentence you're pointing out was written to describe the very event it's dismissing: a semifinal outperforming/being more memorable than a final. I doubt many people remember that relative drumming of Nada by Savior in the finals, but that semifinal with Iris is branded all over the brains of anyone who saw it.
