Anyone know how an electromagnetic parking sensor work?
Ala http://www.parkingdynamics.com

I found this information from the manufacturer but it's not very descriptive. Or maybe I'm just bad at comprehending it.

The Parking Dynamics PD1 is based on an innovative concept that uses electromagnetic waves with low energy.

When reverse gear is selected the small electronic control unit (ECU) generates an electromagnetic field and transfers this to the transceiver adhesive tape that is placed on the inner side of and run the length of your bumper. The PD1 Front sensor is activated by a a switch and works in exactly the same way as the PD1 rear reverse sensor.

The magnetic tape (antenna) then sends out an elliptical electromagnetic field to cover the full area around your bumper, front, rear and sides. The transceiver antenna tape works by sending and receiving unlike ultrasonic parking and reverse sensors that require 2 types of sensors, one to send and one to receive; if they become dirty the ultrasonic performance can deteriorate.

An obstacle is then monitored by the electronic control unit (ECU) by translating this obstacle measurement into a voltage. When an object with a certain mass (i.e. people, kerbs, cars, etc) enters this elliptical zone a change in the electrical field is created and an increase in voltage is detected by the control unit and you are then informed by a series of audible tones how close you are to the object. The PD1-Vision also gives you a visual alert with integrated audio. You can then manoeuvre accordingly with plenty of time to react.

I'm not even on the clear whether it works by reflection of a wave or induction. Anyone interested in stuff like this here?

Interesting. I'm going to bed now, but hopefully when I check this thread tomorrow there will be some nice explanations.

It must use the reactions in the field caused by objects in its surrounding, that description is not enough to tell you exactly what they do.

They won't tell you EXACTLY how they work, because some other company will copy it.

I don't know how detailed you want to get, but basically, from how I read it...

1. It sends out an electromagnetic field
2. When something enters that electromagnetic field, it tells you

I'm not exactly sure which one (MRI or CTScan), but I think it works similar. My dad, a radiologist, says whenever they're not sure what something is (i.e. bone, organ, air, calcium deposits, etc.), they can highlight the image on a computer and it tells them what it most probably is, I guess due to certain factors (i.e. density) based on the magnetic field.

If they can do this with organs and bones and stuff, it'd probably be much easier with cars, since... they are made out of metal after all.

this...

also the grammar's pretty bad IMO it was hard to read =.=
and it makes sense that object is "large" mass would disrupt the field due to polarization
ggyo...

Basically it just converts mass relative to its location as voltages then beeps when things are close enough to it?

I saw a commericial for one of these and the guy just like drove through the back of his garage then was like GRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 then bought one and stopped before the wall.

Dumbest fucking commericial ever. Who needs this shit

I have no idea. Things that it shouldn't be based on what they're advertising:

Not based on the magnetism of the surrounding objects - they claim that it can detect things with holes in it

Not based on ultrasound - apparently ultrasound requires triangulation, which would require more sensors.

No line of sight needed: apparently you can install it behind the back bumper (on the inside of the back bumper)

It needs only one sensor, so no triangulation needed at all (apparently). It also claims from the single sensor that you can cover the whole back bumper, which means that the sensor has adjustable sensitivity, such that the sides can detect things and notify you when you're 5 feet away, and if the object is coming from directly behind the back bumper, it can notify you when the object is 1 foot away from the sensor.
