I figure this just means I need a new laptop, but issue is if there is any way to save the data on my hard disks.
Could I just take the hard disk out and plug it into a desktop and retrieve the data or would that cause even more problems?

But yeah, you can take it out and put it into an external HD case which connects to another comp by USB for example ...

Unless you had a solid state drive in your laptop, it's like that your hard drive was what was making noises.

I've been planning a backup session I just didn't think it would completely give out so soon.

Thanks for the info I'll try for the enclosure thing. Are laptop HD different from desktop ones? I've been planning a backup session I just didn't think it would completely give out so soon. Laptop hard drives are smaller, being 2.5" rather than the standard 3.5" for desktop hard drives. Newer laptops are using solid state drives over standard hard disk drives for various reasons. That said, if you look up what laptop you have on the manufacturer's website, you can find out what type of hard drive you have (HDD or SSD), and find an enclosure accordingly. Enclosures exist for all standard consumer hard drives.
