I'm of two minds regarding this entity. But just to get it in the air, it was an ABSOLUTE BLAST meeting new people in such an open environment, and watching other student organizations run events. (Not to mention checking out all the girls!) I also learned a lot and gained a few new perspectives on issues. So i have had a very positive experience attending such an event.
Yes, inevitably, many topics at the conference deal with race and ZOMG IMBA WHITE PPL >=(! sentiments are noted. That is not to say people carried this negative attitude, just that everyone in general seems to acknowledge that such a thought exists.
I personally am more on the approach of: focus on the similarities among men, rather than the differences. And so going to such a "hey look we are not white!" event is quite against what i believe in. Although ECAASU DOESN'T exclude based on race, nevertheless, majority of people will be asian (surprise!) My white friend who came along definitely felt misplaced and i felt most sympathetic for him.
That said, I did secretly feel more at ease among people who looked like me. =p
