Social Justice is a fools errand. May all the adherents at its church be thwarted. Of all the religions I have come across, it is by far the most detestable.

every time there's some kind of a medical question, they ask whether or not if you smoke. i have come to realize that smoking cigarettes can be a causing factor for a lot of shit.

my secret desire is that, i've always wanted to smoke cigarettes. it's tempting, but as far as i know, the number of people smoking is decreasing (in korea), and smokers are always trying to quit, and i pity those who dont' look cool but smoke. unless you're like a gangster or a celebrity, you shouldn't smoke! hah

OMG! For real? So you mean, the tobacco companies have been lying to us all this time?!

But in all serious, this is a bummer, since Cigar prices are probably going up too, right? Oh well, I'm not going to stop...

Smoked 2 packs a day for years.
Decided one day to quit completely.
Was in rage-mode for two months.

Now after 6 months i feel like i never smoked in my life.
But trust me, if i could go back to the 80'-90' i would do the same again. Smoking everywhere you want, smoking in trains, airplanes, restaurants, office, smoking frogs and babys, smoking heros on tv, Those were the days of smoking.

Now the magic is gone. No wars, no racial riots, no "do or die" attitude. One might think we want to live forever.

Smoking is dangerous, and it doesn't really even get you "high" or anything.

But it is a nice habit, and i sort of like the smoking culture. All those nice lighters, ashtrays and that kidn of stuff.

I hope weed gets legalized everywhere.

Then we can have the same kind of stuff, like nice lighters, ashtrays, pipes, and that kind of stuff.
But not so dangerous, and more fun :D

Here,in Singapore more and more people are smoking and the age is decreasing..youngsters are smoking like it's nothing.I've whittled down to a pack every 3 days and i hope i can quit soon.

Singapore has also recently enforced a no smoking ban in most places like parks,<5metres from air conditioned buildings and carparks.Just for a stick imagine where'd you have to go.

holy... here in mongolia, depending on the brand, one pack is between 0,5$ - 1,5$. that makes 10$ for a fine carton of marlboro here and some of you pay same money for one pack.. sucks

It's temporarily more expensive you try varieties of marketed methods. Weening off and other things aren't so expensive.

I hate to suggest the obvious TL.netter reply to this which would be, "try to give up smoking". But frankly, it's not my place (nor do I understand how damned hard it would be. Hell, I've never seen drugs in real life, and have never held a cigarette or alcohol in my hands).

That electric cigarette thing sounded kind of cool, but is water vapor really like the stuff in a cigarette? Sounds like it'd just be like breathing over a boiling pot of water or a humidifier. If you try this let me know.

Best of luck to you whatever you do, luck and prayers if you try to quit ;-)

I smoke like a pack a month. So about a cig a day but not really since the only time I smoke is when I am drinking socially. Matter of fact I just picked up this bad habit in the passed 2 years. There is times when I don't smoke for a good month though, but that's when im getting stoned out of my mind. I hate the smell and stench the cigs leave though. Good luck with quitting.

wanna quit ?

hint: drink a lot of liquid during meals or just after them. It kinda helps with that extreme want to light one.
hint 2: completely stay away from the places where people smoke, just simply dont see your smoking friends for 2 weeks or so, say you are busy or something. makes you forget about it.

first 2-3 days are damn hard, just eat / chew gum when you want to smoke. It gets easier afterwards.

When you put it like that you kind of sound completely clueless of why people smoke in the first place. I am guessing you have never smoked in your lifetime so you don't understand what it does for you. Why do you think people say "I need a smoke" when they are stressed? It completely relaxes you and allows you to regather yourself. Sure if you are strong willed you can do that without the drug, but it sure does help, alot.

I smoked for a very short time quitting after about three months because I am very active in working out and I noticed a huge difference in my breathing during intense work out sessions.

wow stop bitching, name brand smokes are 9-10$ here. Cartons are 80$ for 10 packs or 70$ for 8. It's been like this for like 5 years and its managable. just cut back on smoking instead of quitting.

Well the reason smoking "calms you down" is because it satisfies the craving your body has for nicotine. So most of the time there wouldn't even be any jitteriness to really get rid of if you didn't smoke in the first place.

I personally never touched a cigarette again after I found out my grandfather had emphysema. Maybe it's because I had almost drowned as a kid, but the thought of dieing by literally slowly suffocating to death made me think smoking kind of wasn't worth it.

First paragraph says it.

They only "relax" you when you already have a dependence.

This tax will be good in stopping people to consume these cancer-sticks.

Smoke weed everyday!

EDIT: I don't want people to get me wrong. I am 100% for self-sovereignty and hate the idea of having a body-babysitter. However, the death statistics for cigarettes are absolutely ridiculous.

I'm pretty much the only person I know who doesn't smoke. Pretty lame when every time I go outside with my friends there's no such thing as fresh air.

I'll admit it was alluring when I was younger, but now it just looks gross and stupid. I wonder if people just starting high school feel the same way, or if the allure is 100% the 14 year old "I want to look like I don't give a fuck" attitude. I guess it's probably more of a social crutch than anything else.

One of the main benefits that I can see for raising cigarette prices is that it will prevent future kids from getting involved with it. Some of you have said that it does nothing to the current smokers who still continue to buy cigarettes regardless of the increases in prices, but the main impact would be to prevent future generations from getting involved. So the long term effects of doing it are pretty good.

In general though, I think it prevents people who haven't smoked before, but are potential smokers, to reconsider given the fact of high prices which will prevent them from getting addicted. For the current addicts though, well, the tax will help the economy... =/

i understand what FirstBorn is trying to say.

here's a question, what made you wanna smoke cigarettes in the first place?

as far as i know, most people start smoking because they wanna look "cool", and then eventually they get addicted to it.

i'm pretty sure you didn't start smoking cigarettes because you knew it was gonna make you relax.. if you did, thats one of the dumbest shit i've ever heard. there are different ways around it than gradually killing yourself and potentially others with second hand smoking.

resorting to cigarettes for relaxing is lol. it's the nicotine, not that you're naturally like this.

Yea just quit for realz... I can understand doing pot but smoking cigarettes is just stupid. I mean I tried it once and I didn't get what was so great about it. It'd be one more thing to have to remember with my phone, keys, and wallet. I'd have to add on a pack of cigs and a light too. Screw that!

That really depends...I've roomed with several stoners, and I used to be quite close to some slingers back in my hometown. They probably smoked an equivalent of 2-3 packs a day...of course they aren't really recreational weed smokers who just bake with friends are parties now and then, but it's not fair to compare people like them to habitual cigarette smokers either.

I will go through a pack in ~3 days.

I'll admit, I started due to peer pressure. My new friends in college all smoked, and I started smoking one every time we drank...then I bought my first pack a while later, and it snowballed from there. I've been trying to cut down, and as aforementioned, I go through packs in 3-4 days now...the lowest I've been since I started was like 3 cigs a day though.

I also understand what he was trying to say, but you only say stuff like that to people who have already started as you wonder why they don't quit. I don't think it looks cool...I don't even smoke that much in public...mostly at home from my balcony.

It was definitely a dumb idea to start.

Not likely. Kids will still bum their first cigarettes/buy cigarettes for a dollar of older kids.

In fact.. All my friends who probably never would have started smoking cigarettes started smoking cigars first, because they thought it was classy and cool, and then moved onto cigarettes later. That sounds a bit backwards since cigars are more powerful, but it does make sense. As cigars are considered 'occasional' semi-celebrational type things, it won't really matter what their price is. And since every human being is capable of delegating almost anything as being worthy of celebration, my friends started smoked much more often than could be called 'occasional.'

In any case, smoking as a habit has always been ludicrously expensive.

Yeah this is kinda annoying for me. As a smoker myself, it's really frustrating seeing these constant price raises of cigarettes but I can understand the reason behind it.

From my point of view, or from what I've noticed with my friends or people i know concerning cigarettes, they either start because:

1. Peer pressure. I know you learn this kinda stuff in elementary school (programs like D.A.R.E. that are supposed to teach students not to give into peer pressure that advocates drug use and such) but when you're constantly kicking it with a group of friends that smoke, it's kind of hard not to. I give mad props for people that are able to keep themselves from smoking, despite being around smokers all the time. I think this is the reason I started.. I remember when I didnt smoke I would be kicking it with mostly all smokers, and when we would just be chillin somewhere outside they would always be smoking and I'd just be standing there.. so eventually I joined in.

2. Stress reliever? I know this is an incredibly stupid reason, and it doesn't make sense because if you're not a smoker, I don't think it would help relieve it. If you can keep yourself from becoming accustomed to using cigarettes as a stress reliever than that's all the better for you. But tbh, I do tend to smoke more when I'm incredibly stressed out (eg after I do bad on an exam or something)

I know a lot of people that only smoke cigarettes on specific occasions such as when they're drinking or when they blaze because it helps set off the buzz or high. I think that's understandable and imo it's okay.. as long as they don't let that occasional smoking turn into a regular habit.

I live in Washington state and our cigarette prices have gone up to around 8 dollars a pack.. which is fucking ridiculous. And it is all the more incentive to quit now..

A little bit of advice to quit smoking: Once you really get the mindset to completely stop, don't even smoke one more, thinking that it won't effect your motivation to quit. I'm not sure if it's just for me and my friends, but I've discussed this before and if you're trying to quit, even smoking just one can completely fail the quitting. And I just lol whenever I hear about people using "replacements" for smoking such as sunflower seeds. That doesn't work at all imo..

Poll: What's the best way to quit cigarettes?
(Vote): Quit cold. Try never to smoke at all after you decide to quit.
(Vote): slowly cut down the amount you smoke until eventually you quit.

imo i think its better to quit cold.. im actually in the process of trying to quit.. this is day 2 and it hasnt been hard yet, but for me it usually doesnt get hard until the weekend when i kick it more or around a week into it.. > _<;;

That's not the only way, but that's what worked for me. Some people are different and need to cold turkey or nicotine patch or whatever.

I think it depends entirely on the person, but for most people, quitting cold. A person has got to be able to say 'I'm done, I don't want to smoke anymore." If a person just cuts down little by little, it's mentally disruptive because they know they're still smoking even though they've said they'd quit, and it's easier to fall back into old habits. Physiologically though, it's probably easier to ween yourself off if the mental hurdle doesn't affect you.

Logistically, the best way is to quit cold turkey as well, just cause it costs less money

Using this space to pimp out the fact that I've yet to try a cig ever. Don't know how that worked out really.

And regarding prices, I highly doubt that it's the state 'looking out for the kids' If anything, it's the complete opposite. They know that most people are so hooked that they'll still shell out the cash for cigs (look at NY—what, $10 now??).

Like Chef said, most kids start bumming for a stoge or two for a buck off of older kids. By the time they get sucked in, they'll pay whatever.

It depends on how much you smoke I suppose. Two or three cigs a day, it can't be that hard to go cold turkey. A pack or something a day would be miserable cold turkey.

u can stop all the way, but the mentality behind it needs to be a day by day process
setting unrealistic goals like -quitting for the rest of your life- will burden you heavily.

just take it slow , and if you only go 4months, alright, if u go forever... great!
but just saying you'll quit forever, and then u smoke that one cig... a day that disappointed you... a day that any normal (by normal i mean non-smoker) person might actually turn to drugs, ...
you will have failed yourself, and from there it's nearly impossible to quit with that mentality.

Hehe.. Almost every single one of my friend's smoke. Some a pack a day, some just a square once or twice a day. It didn't really do it for me though. I'll smoke occasionally, when I'm drinking or it feels like the social thing to do, but I really get nothing out of it. I've probably smoked less than 6 cigarrettes this year.. hardly a big deal imo.

I want to quit but I'm so weak
I don't smoke when my girlfriend is here and I don't even feel the urge to smoke probably because we wanted to quit and she made it and I failed. But as soon as she is gone I will light a cigg...damn I suck

so said Physician circa 2009, now.
