my secret desire is that, i've always wanted to smoke cigarettes. it's tempting, but as far as i know, the number of people smoking is decreasing (in korea), and smokers are always trying to quit, and i pity those who dont' look cool but smoke. unless you're like a gangster or a celebrity, you shouldn't smoke! hah

Decided one day to quit completely. Was in rage-mode for two months. Now after 6 months i feel like i never smoked in my life. But trust me, if i could go back to the 80'-90' i would do the same again. Smoking everywhere you want, smoking in trains, airplanes, restaurants, office, smoking frogs and babys, smoking heros on tv, Those were the days of smoking. Now the magic is gone. No wars, no racial riots, no "do or die" attitude. One might think we want to live forever.

But it is a nice habit, and i sort of like the smoking culture. All those nice lighters, ashtrays and that kidn of stuff. I hope weed gets legalized everywhere. Then we can have the same kind of stuff, like nice lighters, ashtrays, pipes, and that kind of stuff. But not so dangerous, and more fun :D Wee

It's temporarily more expensive you try varieties of marketed methods. Weening off and other things aren't so expensive. I hate to suggest the obvious TL.netter reply to this which would be, "try to give up smoking". But frankly, it's not my place (nor do I understand how damned hard it would be. Hell, I've never seen drugs in real life, and have never held a cigarette or alcohol in my hands). That electric cigarette thing sounded kind of cool, but is water vapor really like the stuff in a cigarette? Sounds like it'd just be like breathing over a boiling pot of water or a humidifier. If you try this let me know. Best of luck to you whatever you do, luck and prayers if you try to quit ;-)

hint: drink a lot of liquid during meals or just after them. It kinda helps with that extreme want to light one. hint 2: completely stay away from the places where people smoke, just simply dont see your smoking friends for 2 weeks or so, say you are busy or something. makes you forget about it. first 2-3 days are damn hard, just eat / chew gum when you want to smoke. It gets easier afterwards. gl

I am guessing you have never smoked in your lifetime so you don't understand what it does for you. Why do you think people say "I need a smoke" when they are stressed? It completely relaxes you and allows you to regather yourself. Sure if you are strong willed you can do that without the drug, but it sure does help, alot. I smoked for a very short time quitting after about three months because I am very active in working out and I noticed a huge difference in my breathing during intense work out sessions.

I'll admit it was alluring when I was younger, but now it just looks gross and stupid. I wonder if people just starting high school feel the same way, or if the allure is 100% the 14 year old "I want to look like I don't give a fuck" attitude. I guess it's probably more of a social crutch than anything else.

So the long term effects of doing it are pretty good. In general though, I think it prevents people who haven't smoked before, but are potential smokers, to reconsider given the fact of high prices which will prevent them from getting addicted. For the current addicts though, well, the tax will help the economy... =/ Not likely. Kids will still bum their first cigarettes/buy cigarettes for a dollar of older kids. In fact.. All my friends who probably never would have started smoking cigarettes started smoking cigars first, because they thought it was classy and cool, and then moved onto cigarettes later. That sounds a bit backwards since cigars are more powerful, but it does make sense. As cigars are considered 'occasional' semi-celebrational type things, it won't really matter what their price is. And since every human being is capable of delegating almost anything as being worthy of celebration, my friends started smoked much more often than could be called 'occasional.' In any case, smoking as a habit has always been ludicrously expensive.

From my point of view, or from what I've noticed with my friends or people i know concerning cigarettes, they either start because: 1. Peer pressure. I know you learn this kinda stuff in elementary school (programs like D.A.R.E. that are supposed to teach students not to give into peer pressure that advocates drug use and such) but when you're constantly kicking it with a group of friends that smoke, it's kind of hard not to. I give mad props for people that are able to keep themselves from smoking, despite being around smokers all the time. I think this is the reason I started.. I remember when I didnt smoke I would be kicking it with mostly all smokers, and when we would just be chillin somewhere outside they would always be smoking and I'd just be standing there.. so eventually I joined in. 2. Stress reliever? I know this is an incredibly stupid reason, and it doesn't make sense because if you're not a smoker, I don't think it would help relieve it. If you can keep yourself from becoming accustomed to using cigarettes as a stress reliever than that's all the better for you. But tbh, I do tend to smoke more when I'm incredibly stressed out (eg after I do bad on an exam or something) I know a lot of people that only smoke cigarettes on specific occasions such as when they're drinking or when they blaze because it helps set off the buzz or high. I think that's understandable and imo it's okay.. as long as they don't let that occasional smoking turn into a regular habit. I live in Washington state and our cigarette prices have gone up to around 8 dollars a pack.. which is fucking ridiculous. And it is all the more incentive to quit now.. A little bit of advice to quit smoking: Once you really get the mindset to completely stop, don't even smoke one more, thinking that it won't effect your motivation to quit. I'm not sure if it's just for me and my friends, but I've discussed this before and if you're trying to quit, even smoking just one can completely fail the quitting. And I just lol whenever I hear about people using "replacements" for smoking such as sunflower seeds. That doesn't work at all imo..

(Vote): slowly cut down the amount you smoke until eventually you quit. imo i think its better to quit cold.. im actually in the process of trying to quit.. this is day 2 and it hasnt been hard yet, but for me it usually doesnt get hard until the weekend when i kick it more or around a week into it.. > _<;;

I really dont know what to say.. but smoking stinks =( That's not the only way, but that's what worked for me. Some people are different and need to cold turkey or nicotine patch or whatever. And yea stinking clothes, I refuse to hang out with all my gf's friends in her friend's garage because everyone smokes and you leave smelling horrible. Not to mention the 2nd hand smoke. And their all so fat and lazy that they even try to smoke inside anyone's house whenever possible. fucking go outside idiots.

A person has got to be able to say 'I'm done, I don't want to smoke anymore." If a person just cuts down little by little, it's mentally disruptive because they know they're still smoking even though they've said they'd quit, and it's easier to fall back into old habits. Physiologically though, it's probably easier to ween yourself off if the mental hurdle doesn't affect you. Logistically, the best way is to quit cold turkey as well, just cause it costs less money ![]()

And regarding prices, I highly doubt that it's the state 'looking out for the kids' If anything, it's the complete opposite. They know that most people are so hooked that they'll still shell out the cash for cigs (look at NY—what, $10 now??). Like Chef said, most kids start bumming for a stoge or two for a buck off of older kids. By the time they get sucked in, they'll pay whatever.

Two or three cigs a day, it can't be that hard to go cold turkey. A pack or something a day would be miserable cold turkey.

setting unrealistic goals like -quitting for the rest of your life- will burden you heavily. just take it slow , and if you only go 4months, alright, if u go forever... great! but just saying you'll quit forever, and then u smoke that one cig... a day that disappointed you... a day that any normal (by normal i mean non-smoker) person might actually turn to drugs, ... you will have failed yourself, and from there it's nearly impossible to quit with that mentality.
