Within the last year I have recently relocated 900 miles away from my college town to start my career. I have started work with an IT shop that is extremely modern, progressive and innovative. I am not only encouraged but expected to be constantly learning new techniques to help our company.
Before I moved, I worked for a web company in a small town that had a portfolio of about 300 customers. They do quite well for themselves, however they are still stuck in the past. They use splash pages, a lot of images (not used with css), still use table designs, and. . . well if you've done web design I hope you feel my pain. The worst part of it all, they use dreamweaver to do almost all of their websites.
I still work for this company from home for two reasons. It allows me to continue to work with the front end more, because most work I do at my new job is java programming. Also, the supplemental income is a nice bit of play money for the month. However, I'm becoming less and less tolerant of their stagnant thought process. I have tried to get them to move more towards a modern thought process, and have had some successes, but no where near as close as I would like.
The thing I'm wondering is if any of you have ever had to deal with a situation like this where you are unhappy with other employees/boss and you would like to make a change. I don't understand how a company can be okay with being complacent. To me, its like a slap in the face that the other employees won't take the time to become current with their knowledge. With that being said, I don't want to offend anyone or cause there to be an awkwardness between us.
Any opinions?
