Firstly, how much money should I accumulate to start off living on my own? I have four thousand right now; is this enough to set myself up somewhere (with extra so that in case things fall through I at least have some buffer)?
It completely depends on where you live. New York City costs way more than say some little town in central PA. That said, if you're persistent about applying for a job (read: apply for new ones every single day), four grand should be enough to get you going. Be aware that in the current economy, job hunting is going to really suck and you very well might need to take a temp job.

Secondly, I am interested in working in other English-speaking places outside of the United States. I'm currently in Ireland and Ireland doesn't allow foreign workers except for extraordinary circumstances (if I'm caught working, they'll immediately deport me and bar me entrance to the EU for ten years). I was wondering if anyone knows how working in NZ, Australia, GB, South Africa, ect. works.
Not sure. But your University probably has a multicultural center, foreign studies department (who did you contact to spend a semester abroad?) or something similar that employs people who'd be qualified to answer this.

I'm also guessing that living on my own outside of school will take some adjustment. Probably'll be weird, but, hell, I can't wait to graduate.
Thanks.
It does. It's also kind of nice. It's best if you've got friends in the area, or you're friendly enough to make friends.
