Poll: Should I get the Sidekick 2008 or the Samsung Gravity? (Vote): T-Mobile Sidekick 2008 (Vote): Samsung Gravity
Alright, my family's plan ends on March 7th and I can get a new phone. I currently have the Nokia 6263 music phone thing, so I definitely want to upgrade. I'm with T-Mobile by the way, and I'm sticking with T-Mobile so don't tell me to switch.
Keep in mind that I'm going to be having Unlimiting Text and Picture Messaging, and either My Faves 300 (or is it 400? I don't want to look) or 1000 Whenever Minutes. Probably the latter, though.
T-Mobile Sidekick 2008:
I've always really liked the Sidekick but never texted that much until now. I'm not paying for the full data plan which includes internet for $35. I'm only going to have Text and Picture messaging and whatever else is available for it.
The only concerns I have towards it are that you can only record 30 second videos, when you receive a text message it does not display the contact's name, only the number, and you must download or use the Sidekick's ringtones; you cannot create your own.
I'm just really concerned about the text message part to be honest. From what I know, if you don't pay the $35/month then it will only show the number not the name. I'm NOT buying the data plan so that's why I don't know if I should get the Sidekick or not.
The ringtone thing isn't REALLY that bad for me because I usually have my phone in vibrate or silent in class, and the video- I never really record because of the poor quality.
I also really like the skin changing because I would have customized and made my own (Chargers FTW ^^).
Samsung Gravity:
Alright, so you can tell I really want a phone with a QWERTY keyboard huh? Yeah, it's basically just now that phones are getting full keyboards.
On the Gravity I really like that there's a slide-out keyboard which means that you can use the normal key pad to text with T9 (which helps in class). I also really like that it has a dedicated messaging key (it's between the left soft key and the green call key) which you can set to what you want.
I just think the 1.3 Megapixel camera is pretty weak... The Sidekick has a 2 Megapixel. I'm unsure about the video capturing.. I assume you can set the camera and video to save to your memory card, which I believe would give you as much recording time as you can...
I'm also pretty sure you should be able to set your MP3s and custom ringtones as your phone's ringtone.
Well there aren't really much things I have to think about for the Gravity.
If the Sidekick showed your contact's name when you received a text message, then the Sidekick would have been a shoe-in.
But now that I learned that from my friends, it gives the Gravity a chance...
Anyone have opinions or have/had these phones and would like to comment or anything? Feel free too because I've just been watching and reading reviews and all that.

Oh, thanks, what a great thing to tell me. I'll be sure to remember that, because I certainly did not know that I shouldn't get any of my things, let alone my cellphone, stolen.
Please don't point out the obvious...

I have a sidekick, and it does show contact's name when you receive a text. The alert at the top of the screen shows a number, but hit menu button + 0 (hotkey to go to new msg on aim/msn/yahoo/text) and you instantly jump to the text and it shows who its from. For me, I get internet+text+messengers for $20 a month, and there was no option for just texting.... its a certain type of phone that stores the data online, for the $20 a month "data plan" you get text/msging/internet. I didn't text much until my sidekick but then once I got it I did a lot more. The sidekick has a lot of cool hotkeys with the menu button + various letters to jump to every feature of the phone.
Basically - the data plan is $20 a month for sidekick, and is NECESSARY for it to work properly. The guy at the store told me that it will occaisonally delete information on your phone if you don't get the data plan. This is what I was told. ( I live in New York City USA).
As for ringtones, I don't really care about what my ringtone is but I never even found out how to change it in the first place. -_-;;

I went to a T-Mobile store yesterday and the data plan is $35/month. I checked the website too, and that's what it says.
That's what I was not sure of, if it just did not display the name in the inbox or in the message, too.
But it sounds like you have a data plan which includes internet browsing, right? I'm not going to have that and it's been known that if you don't have the internet then it does not show the name...
Yeah I know Sidekick has a bunch of cool tricks and all that.. but the texting part if my main concern.
Thanks for the reply BTW.

I would probably get the Gravity. Both phones produce terrible images. Megapixel is just a measurement of resolution, not image quality.

That I did not know.
Could you give me your reason why you'd get the Gravity? I really like how it looks but I wish there were more than two colors (White & Blue or Lime & Gray).

Well I just re-watched some Gravity reviews and I'm leaning towards it right now.
I just don't know if I'd be able to live with the displaying only the number thing on the Sidekick in inbox..

how much does the gravity cost?
|
the keyboard on the gravity looks really cramped ... even though it's qwerty format, i'd bet you'd still have a hard time texting as your thumbs press multiple buttons - read some reviews on amazon or try it out in a store and see if you like the keyboard or not. but overall, the gravity looks like a maturer phone than the sidekick; i notice that a lot of tweens and high schoolers using the sidekick since they saw their favorite rap stars use them on mtv cribs.

I believe it said $49.99 on the T-Mobile website. It's under $50 for sure, even in stores.

Well it's not really a long phone. I guess Samsung did not want to make it too big, but I'd agree it does look cramped. I've tried it out and it's fine for me... Luckily I don't have big fingers.
Yeah, the Sidekick is more for teens and high schoolers (which is me...) I 'm not considering it because it's popular and all that, just cause I've always wanted one but IDK now.
I know next Saturday I'm going to the T-Mobile store and I'm going to be playing with both a lot and see which I'd like the best if I still can't decide... I've already played with each for a bit and I like the feel of the Sidekick more but that flaw is killing me...
Thanks for responses guys... I really appreciate it.

Go for the gravity, the sidekick is ugly as sin.

Hmm thanks for your opinion. You can change the face plates to whatever you want, as you can order a custom one online.

I added a poll so if you guys could vote up that'd be somewhat of help to me.
