Damn it, I'm stuck at home with the flu that I've had since Friday. I've already skipped Track & Field practice on Monday (yesterday) and I don't want to skip today's. I have a slight fever and my coughing has settled down so I'm up for exercising but even then I'm not sure if it's the best idea.
http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/flu-guide/exercise-when-you-have-the-flu
This site says that slight exercise can help circulate white blood cells but that it's advisable to rest. Problem is, I know how easy it is to get out of shape quickly when one skips practice (I've already made that huge mistake once before). Now I'm stuck with a dilemma.
Either: 1. Skip practice, rest, and wait 1-2 days before resuming school and exercise. However, return to practice out of shape and struggling to catch up. 2. Go to practice and stay in shape but maybe make things worse. Exercising when sick might not be beneficial at all.
Where's that "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-" picture :[

lol DON'T exercice if you have the flu you can permanently ruin your body if you are still sick and train the virus can attack your heart (maybe a bad expression) but pls don't do it it's better to be 100% fit before you start to train again, otherwise you risk to be sick longer and you will be disappointed anyway because you suck hard in comparison with your normal performance moreover doing sport when you are sick is exhausting while you get no pleasure

Rest, you dummy Just like one day of exercise won't make you the hulk, one day without won't ruin all you've worked for either. You won't be 'out of shape' when you get back. Whatever you experienced before was all in your head.

Is it alright to stay home and do small things like push-ups, planks, elevators?
|
According to what you posted, just enough to get the blood running.

Does that mean it's alright to go to practice and exercise just enough to get the blood running? :D
Because today should be a recovery day...
Although it would blow if I can't join in on the other stuff -___-

Will it really kill you to take a few days off from working out?

Well, in sophomore year, the coaches said for spring break to only run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I decided to skip Monday and Wednesday (I'm an idiot for doing that) because I felt it was too early to go and it's easier to just skip it. So I ran on Thursday by myself and I was incredibly out of shape. Before that week I would say I was at the top shape I've ever been in my life up to that point. During that 3.5 mile run I was suffering by the first mile and the week after my cardio was sooo bad. I ended up doing poorly for the rest of the season. Because of a lack of motivation I quit running my junior year. Now that I'm a senior I don't want to waste anymore time and I've been training harder this year than I've ever before.
However, since I'm doing short distance cardio shouldn't matter as much... but I don't want to take the risk of skipping out on practice.
EDIT: I forgot, the doctor said that I should rest until Thursday... At this rate I might have to wait that long because my coughing at night and in the morning has been bad although it's fine now.

from my experience very very light controlled cardio can help a little bit but don't overdo it and certainly don't do it to a point to 'stay in shape'

dude just rest... doing otherwise is retarded

As people have mentioned before, exercising while having the flu can seriously damage your heart, causing flu viruses to infect your heart. Actually, a couple of weeks ago a German sportsman died because of a similar thing. Stay at home and get well, then go and practise. Those few days out of practise are not going to hurt you much.
