I'm starting a new job in the beginning of February and have all of January to kill

So I did a quick check today and I've got enough frequent flier miles to go anywhere in the world except South America. Which means North America, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia, Oceania are all in reach.

I'd love to hear any suggestions of where to go and why!

My short list of criteria & details:

1. I'll be going with 1 friend.
2. The trip will be in January. A place that's cold is fine, but ice cubes in cocktails are as close as I care get to winter sports.
3. China, Korea, and France are all out as I'll be traveling there for business a lot anyways.
4. Trip can only be about 1 week long, so that rules out some more in-depth stuff like a safari in Africa.
5. Things that are specific to January are not required but would be cool (e.g. festivals, holidays, cultural stuff, other once a year events), as this isn't usually a time of the year I get to travel.

Any thoughts?

Is your friend male or female?

What do you want from your trip? Learning cultures vs. just relax.

How much money are you willing to spend?

What kind of stuff are you interested in?

I spent a week in Kyoto just a few weeks ago. I hated it, but if you are into temples and castles, it could be pretty good, especially if there's some snow.

This post seems to have completely disregarded the criteria of the OP lol.

I think you should tell us more about what kind of stuff you like/don't like... it sounds like you are pretty open minded about the whole thing though.

I've never left north america so I won't be much help with exotic vacations 8o

- female

- money's not really an issue. Nothing insane though (no 5-star resort islands etc)

- anything really memorable , could be cultural , historic, exciting, crazy . Very open minded.

Perhaps I should rephrase your post and then we'll see where we stand.

Notice how people are having trouble helping him! It's basically going to become a "I tried this place so you should to" game, but sooner or later that might work.

Come to Crawfordsville, IN for a week and witness first-hand what shitty small town American life is like.

EDIT: In all seriousness, you should think about visiting Kurdistan. It's very safe and beautiful, and it would be an unusual trip, although it might be hard to plan unless you speak Arabic

Iraq is a very historic place.

On a more helpful note, I've been to Spain/Portugal which was a blast. Cathedrals and beautiful beaches were quite a sight to see, and at night/morning discos will quench your party craving. Though, you are from the netherlands, so Europe might be old hat for you.

I have also been to several parts of Canada, including Vancouver, Edmonton (RIDICULOUSLY big mall), Calgary, and Whistler (is skiing/snowboarding your thing?). It was a fun trip but I wouldn't call it thrilling, more like relaxing.

Cancun in Mexico is also an amazingly fun place. You can go snorkeling, surfing, or visit sick aztec temples and ruins. Of course, in Cancun there are buses that ship you around practically for free so you can wander the clubs and get trashed and still make it back to your hotel without worry. I stayed at the Westin.

Let me know if you wanna know more about these places from a tourist perspective.

Also, I would advise you to check out Dubai if price really isn't an issue.

Kyoto could be very magical if both of you are into that types of stuff. While you are there, you can take a few days to go to Osaka (clubbing, they say Osaka is the new Roppongi), Kobe (kobe steak = win in life), Nara (more cultural stuff) and possibly Himeji (this castle is actually nice) and Okayama (beautiful garden). If you are still interested, you can go to Miyajima and Ama no Hashidatte (two of the three most popular scenery places in Japan). Could be somewhat expensive, but since money isn't an issue, go for it?

I haven't been to too many places outside of Asia (but lots and lots in Asia ), and Japan tops my list in Asia.

In all honestly, I don't think Korea (i.e. Seoul and Pusan) is that great for touring. A. There isn't that much touristy stuff to do, and B. The county is a bitch to navigate, since not all signs are labeled and almost no one speaks English...

I tried this but couldn't get an flight itinerary that worked out for me. That's ok though, I was there before in 2001 and am kinda glad it forced me to pick someplace new.

Finally picked Spain & Morocco. Few days in Barcelona and then to Marrakech and from there out into the desert. I've been to Barcelona a few times but Morocco will be completely new for us I'm excited!

The weather is currently awesome in Australia and South-East Asia.

If I was planning my trip in February I would start in Thailand go to Koh Phangan on Feb 10th for the full moon party, and then fly to Phuket for 4-5 days and stay at a resort, they are cheap and awesome, be lazy by the pool or go jet skiing, enjoy the food and culture.

I would then fly to Singapore for some food and shopping and then head over to the islands of Vietnam for some of the most scenic views in the world.

But thats just me, I love the weather, I love the culture and food.
