Took me blooming ages but finally seen it. For me, a top 10 film no doubt about it. Probably the best and deepest, and darkest and most intelligent action film ever made. Heath Ledger's performance is one of THE performances, comparable to your marlon brandos, jack nicholsons, al pacinos.
I've got no complaints about the film. Any issues I have are so minor, it would be impossible for them to tarnish my opinion of it. A 10/10 for me.
The story was perfect, very clever and one step ahead the whole time. The joker is SUCH an amazing character, both from the inimitable acting and also from his script and his plot. His general concept and appearance is so different from any other incarnation, and it's definitely my favourite.
All of the other actors were fantastic imo. Aaron Eckhart was fantastic. Michael Caine and Martin Lawrence played really well. Amazing delivery of the important lines from everyone.
The whole FEELING one gets of Joker's impressive and dark genius and audacity is intoxicating. My head was swimming with bewilderment at his plans...and infuriated trying to think of ways to beat him! This is SUCH a clever action film...SO cerebral. The philosophy is SO tasty.
The film is really well paced in my opinion. Not a second too long, not a second too short. Anyone who thinks it was long is probably a different kind to me. I get so absorbed in films I just want them to go on and on. I was perfectly happy with the length of gladiator/ crouching tiger hidden dragon/ gone with the wind so this film didn't faze me at all.
To just wax a little more amorous lyrical about Heath Ledger, trying to imagine all the lines he delivered being done in ANY other way left me exasperated. He seemed to achieve perfection in the delivery of that script. He brought more than, to my mind, any other actor could. Which is SO weird because in A Knight's Tale he made Pinocchio look fleshy. Looks can be deceiving eh.
My only stinging pain about the film is the horrifying prospect of a sequel without ledger.
+ Show Spoiler +For me, the fact that joker is in control makes it so thrilling. Well, he precisely ISN'T in control but he definitely has a sort of control. He makes plans and at least has a lot of knowledge about criminal activity. It doesn't seem Two-face could be as cunning or enthralling as him. He's just an angry and probably will end up twisted bastard. Joker really is a different class of criminal.
And by the way I LOVED that whole justification of his crimes. It's fucking amazing. The bit where he burnt the money. Just brilliant. SO FUCKING DIFFERENT from mweh mweh mweh penguin chugging along in his submarine looking for a bank vault to rob mweh mweh mweh.
And about the boat scene. BAAAAH. I don't care about your finnickety questioning of the writing. I really find it hard to imagine that there wouldn't be one frantic guy with little foresight who would be perfectly happy to blow the others up...but I found the WHOLE point of that scene is to make US as surprised as the joker and batman are. I think the whole FILM puts us in that position. We never get to see the Joker's plans until they are revealed to a good guy. That's totally the point of the film. GENIUS strokes all round
This film really puts my faith back in Hollywood, in what has actually been a very strong year anyway. Brilliant to see films of this calibre coming out and achieving success. So fucking brilliant! I rave about it to everyone!
Oh yes and I think, technically, this film has an AMAZING balance in the timing. By which I mean, the pans and shots and amounts of time the camera waits after some fact has been revealed are JUST slow enough for you to catch what's going on first time through, but fast enough so that when you watch again it's not irritating. GREAT work!
And also, FINALLY, someone has shot action scenes in the dark WELL...WITH a moving camera! Who would have thought it could be done. See the latest bond film's TERRIBLE camera work for an example. You get a sense of motion and tension, but you can actually see what the hell's going on!
The Joker's 'theme tune' was irritating at first but has grown on me. It's almost as if his ethos of throwing the rules out the window has inspired his own theme tune. Lovely!

My mom just rented it for the first time today... coincidence?
I actually saw it months ago and, while I thought it was very good, and possibly the best Batman overall, I wasn't completely blown away. Some of the things it receives the most credit for, I thought were not groundbreaking at all.

agreed i can watch this movie many times over and i was equally disappointed heath can't be in the sequel =(

Hmm, you mean Morgan Freeman? lol Martin Lawrence is in The Black Knight.
Ye, there's mad symbolism and running themes in this movie. The big one would be the struggle to retain ethics and morality in the face of crisis. A big parallel to what we're currently going through with terrorism and the Patriot Act, etc. Batman is the hero because even as Harvey Dent falls, Batman is able to hold onto his one rule of not killing anybody, no matter the cost.
Also, it was kind of scary how the Joker almost made sense when he was persuading Dent in the hospital scene.

There shouldn't be a sequel. This movie series will go nowhere but down if they make one. This movie is just too fucking amazing.
I saw this about a month ago for the first time and I was amazed at Heath Ledger's acting. Made me 1000x sadder that he passed away

+ Show Spoiler +the dent persuasion scene was retarded, it was complete bullshit, also, dent was a fucking pussy, oh no my girlfriend die, who cares, its just some random bitch. Also, the boat scene is bullshit, how the fuck do you get bombs there, i mean... come on, HOW DO YOU KNOW CHECK FOR BOMBS ON YOUR FUCKING SHIP.
A few things that happened in the game was retarded. Dent losing his mind, JUST CAUSE HIS BITCH DIED, is retarded. How the boat situation happened was retarded dent and that bitch getting caught joker fucking the mafia like nothing in general, a lot of shit happens without a good enough reason, it feels like it happened just so thq
The movie is acceptable considering the situation, the movie was acually really well made considering what had to be done, and the fact that its a movie.

Im pretty sure everyone got that.
Besides he even edited his post come on, and he capitalized "I" even though he just used a comma.

Jack Nicholson was better.

lol. The Dark Knight is just a good movie, definitely not on my top ten and I've seen every superhero movie (even the rise of the silver surfer). Ledger's death, while tragic, is making people think out of their asses.
Nolan's previous film The Prestige is much better than the Dark Knight.

Have you read the Long Halloween graphic novel? (which The Dark Knight is loosely based on). I would be interested to hear thoughts on a comparison between the source material and the film. I enjoyed the film immensely too, but having read the graphic novel first, I thought the relationship between Harvey Dent and Batman was underplayed and perhaps a missed opportunity.
In the Long Halloween, Harvey Dent and Batman had a deep friendship, united by their desire to fight crime - symbolised by a pact that the two make between them to bend the rules if necessary, but never to break them. Harvey's character is far more ambiguous, he seems a principled man committed to justice, yet the reader is never sure of the full extent of his motivations.
The story focuses on the hunt for a mystery killer who is systematically killing off Gotham's biggest crime family. Batman has strong suspicions that Harvey is the perpertrator of these crimes but he maintains faith in his friend - a theme that is repeated in various contexts throughout the novel, 'I believe in Harvey Dent'.
Ultimately this friendship and faith that Batman had in Harvey makes his transformation into Two Face a much more emotional and tragic experience. This was a key element of the film and its climax, but I felt there was inadequate build up to it - Batman's relationship with Harvey was never fully explored and there did not seem to be much of a bond between the two of them.
Overall, the film ending lacked impact for me as I preferred the character building and downfall of Harvey Dent from the graphic novel, and felt that it would have added a lot to an already fantastic film if it had been incorporated.

It was definately a great movie but I think the writing and directing made it great. The joker's performance was alright, but nothing special. I don't see how it's any better than the bad guys in Harry Potter or stuff like that.

It's amazing how much momentum an idea can get when it's agreed upon by a bunch of people.
1) The Joker performance was very good... (few weeks later) ... oh my god that was the best performance ever.
For comparison:
2) Hm Natalie Portman did a pretty good job in that movie... you know she's pretty good looking... (few weeks later) ... oh my god she is so hot!

i dont know i saw it like 2 days ago and i enjoyed the movie. heath ledger did a really good job as the joker

Batman Begins > Dark Knight.
They are both among my favorite movies however. For me personally, I love seeing the creation of a character. For example, I liked seeing Peter Parker BECOME Spiderman. For this reason, I also liked Godfather part 1 more than Godfather part 2. Godfather part 1 shows a complete transformation of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) and how he BECOMES the godfather. Part 2 is just like the Dark Knight in that it shows the main character's struggles, but not a complete transformation of a character.
On a side note, I think the transformation of Pacino in Godfather part 1 is the best carried out character development and transformation of character in cinema history.
For the same reason I liked Bourne Identity WAY more than the other 2 Bourne movies.
BACK ON TOPIC: One of my main problems with The Dark Knight was TwoFace. His conversion from good to bad was too fast, too cheap, and not realistic. All it took was for Joker to say "people with plans are bad" and he's like "I'm gonna be evil instead of good, har har". Also, it looked bad...too much like The Mummy with the hole in his cheek. That really bothered me.
But the Joker was awesome, Christian Bale is always awesome, and it was overall a pretty good movie.
...Just not as good as Batman Begins.
EDIT: I also think that praising The Dark Knight as the "best movie ever" is a passing fad fanned on by the death of Heath Ledger. I don't buy into it. It is definitely not as good as the LOTR movies, or lots of the other "great movies"

I think I have to agree with this The Prestige is amazing.
Didn't Nolan also direct Memento?
Nolan gets some serious props for his directing skills.
