Have you read the Long Halloween graphic novel? (which The Dark Knight is loosely based on). I would be interested to hear thoughts on a comparison between the source material and the film. I enjoyed the film immensely too, but having read the graphic novel first, I thought the relationship between Harvey Dent and Batman was underplayed and perhaps a missed opportunity.

In the Long Halloween, Harvey Dent and Batman had a deep friendship, united by their desire to fight crime - symbolised by a pact that the two make between them to bend the rules if necessary, but never to break them. Harvey's character is far more ambiguous, he seems a principled man committed to justice, yet the reader is never sure of the full extent of his motivations.

The story focuses on the hunt for a mystery killer who is systematically killing off Gotham's biggest crime family. Batman has strong suspicions that Harvey is the perpertrator of these crimes but he maintains faith in his friend - a theme that is repeated in various contexts throughout the novel, 'I believe in Harvey Dent'.

Ultimately this friendship and faith that Batman had in Harvey makes his transformation into Two Face a much more emotional and tragic experience. This was a key element of the film and its climax, but I felt there was inadequate build up to it - Batman's relationship with Harvey was never fully explored and there did not seem to be much of a bond between the two of them.

Overall, the film ending lacked impact for me as I preferred the character building and downfall of Harvey Dent from the graphic novel, and felt that it would have added a lot to an already fantastic film if it had been incorporated.

Agreed wholeheartedly. I would have LOVED to have seen it this way. It was a missed golden opportunity. But then again, that would have been one heck of a long movie. But who doesn't like a great long movie?

Agreed on the Batman Begins>The Dark Knight.

It's weird cause I tried watching BB a year ago and fell asleep, so I figured it was too boring and never tried to watch it again. Then it came on T.V. a month ago and I watched it, after having scene the Dark Knight a week earlier, and I thought BB had better pacing and ultimately a better story to tell.

My only complaint with the movie was Rachel. I didn't like the actress that played her.

i saw it too the other day for the first time aswell...my initial thoughts after seeing it was that it seemed ALOT like the Saw movies.... The Joker just seems so alike to Jigsaw, and his plots and schemes seem alot like the ones Jigsaw does. maybe 8/10 for me.

i watched bat man begins and dark night today, dark night for the second time and BB for the first. imo both movies have their better parts. i was trying to type a reason up, but it turned out shitty and is better summed up by this:

ra's al ghul < joker
scarecrow > 2face
everliving, everfaithful, eversure

Fair enough...but Micronesia your point is totally incorrect if you're aiming it at me. I'm the sort of guy who is almost inextricably drawn towards HATING being caught up in hype and bandwagons. Ledger's performance was absolutely perfect imo and breathtaking, and I couldn't help but be SO pleased after watching the film, to see that for one of those few times (scarface for example) the hype was so correct.

I think people that are comparing this film to superhero films don't understand why I liked it lol. I found all the spidermans, all the batmans (except jim carrey and jack nicholson's performances), iron man, both incredible hulks, all the x mens...pretty much every super hero movie boring, pulpy and unintelligent! So there you go.
"Oh no, we've drawn Judge Schneider" "Is that bad?" "Well, he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog" "You did?" "Yeah...if you replace the word *kinda* with *repeatedly*...and the word *dog* with son"

I think I can go along with this assessment.

But...did he really? I mean, he only pursued vengeance. He didn't really do anything twisted, did he? And I think the reason he didn't kill joker was both because Joker was the inevitable result of the treachery and failings of everyone else who he blamed; AND because Joker actually gave him his head on a plate. And I mean, from his point of view it's all Batman and Gordon's fault for not saving Rachel. I don't think he goes so much 360...so I was able to stomach it and quite liked it...at least it gave the film a real feeling of momentum.

I wasn't aiming it at you... just reflecting on how people tend to be as a whole (or at least how I've observed them to be). You are fully entitled to love Ledger's performance, and I'm not going to tell you it's impossible that you just legitimately liked it for its own value.
