Undergraduate admissions decisions were issued today for Early Decision applicants and...
After careful consideration of your application to the University of Pennsylvania for the Class of 2013, the Admissions Selection Committee has decided to defer its final decision until the Regular Decision notification date of March 31, 2009. I realize that you must be disappointed by this delay, but I want to assure you that you are still being considered for admission to Penn.
The Admissions Committee chooses this action when we wish to have more time to evaluate your application. While we are clearly impressed by your accomplishments, we must be cautious with the limited number of spaces Penn has available. Because we want to give your candidacy the fullest consideration, we ask that you send us a mid-year report of your first semester grades.
If you have any questions, or if this office can be of any assistance to you during the coming months, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This is an important part of his life, and it takes courage to be honest about getting turned down/delayed for something like college. This is one of those situations where a brief OP isn't terrible imo. Also no need to come here just to complain when he's clearly feeling like crap.

Well, at least you got deferred instead of straight up rejected. All I remember was UPenn's rejection letter being very short and blunt as to say "Sorry, you're not good enough for us"
Don't worry about it. Wherever you end up going, it's ultimately what you end up doing in school rather than what school it is.

Oh, I see. That's really lame on their parts because they are somewhat decreasing the chances of other students (I was one of these) who are very passionate about attending the particular university and apply early because it's their best chance of getting in.

Actually, I didn't receive an interview in the first place. It seems that only a small percentage of UPenn applicants received interviews this year based on the college discussion forums that I've browsed.

my friend got admitted to that dual nursing/wharton program!
deferral isnt bad btw, i had at least 3 friends last year who got deferred from MIT then accepted, even more for other schools
(and this is out of like 6 kids who got accepted into MIT, it wasnt the exception, it was the rule)

lol this is true i almost got my acceptance fucked over cuz i got a d on ap bio and i panicked but luckily, nothing happened.
and esp for higher level schools, you need to still work

uhm wtf? not only is it not a bad school, most ppl agree it's one of the top universities in the nation. (although its prestige may not match that of HYPS)

Not that I have the grades, but I wouldn't go there even if I could because of the cost, living out of state
...unless it was a free ride, but I'd have to be pretty godly @ everything
Plus I think I would get homesick leaving my family and friends

UPenn sounds pretty awesome from what my friend says, but remember to keep an open mind. You may still have a chance, but I wouldn't stop applying. If it makes you feel any better, where you get your undergrad isn't too important.

Back when I was in high school, had decent (but not great grades and no clubs/community service/etc) UPenn was the school I dreamed about. Then I dropped out. Not that I had any chance of getting in anyway, but still.

Besides people entering 17 months ago would still be there right now.
