For the hell of it, I started a blog yesterday (an external one, not this thing) after having avoided anything "Web 2.0" for the past few years. I don't have social networking pages, a Flickr page, Twitter page, or anything else.

So what are some good tips for running one besides the obvious that frequently updated, interesting content is king?

1. I have it set right now so people have to register to post. Mostly to avoid spam bots. Is this a bad idea?

2. How important is the context of the author? I don't have a "profile" up and don't identify who I am really.

3. Do people actually like & use these stupid "Tag Clouds" you frequently see?

4. Does every post need a picture of some kind or are people still capable of reading text?

Any other tips would be great Thanks!

I don't really know everything, but pictures always help draw people in of course, so does a profile so they have some sort of idea whether or not what you have to say really matters to them based on who you are and what you do.

Really depends on what you're going for audience-wise.

1. You could require a captcha for anonymous posters
2. Depends on the subject I guess
3. No, but I suppose they're useful for searching/categorizing
4. Depends on the target audience

is this a serious question???

It's your blog. Write w/e you would like to share or w/e you like and could look back on. Write whatever you want. It's YOUR fucking blog. If people don't like it, who the fuck cares? Blogs are about what you like.

I'm not asking about the content of the blog here. I know what I want to write about. I'm asking about the "other stuff" - the trackbacks, the cloud tags, registration defaults etc.

Don't start annoying users with captchas or registration unless your blog is already well-known and visited by many (or unless you already have a problem with spam bots). If it's a small blog, you'll reduce the number of comment writers to almost zero with things like that.

Write quality posts which provide useful information. And remember that no one except real-life friends cares about your private life. These "public diaries" are almost always lame, unless you're a hot chick and put up some photos in which case you'll attract quite a few male visitors.

Also remember that the average time until visitors leave a website when they can't figure out what the site is about is like 2-3 seconds. So make it very clear what your blog is about, don't hide it somewhere behind an "About" link or something.

You really didn't give enough info. It all depends on what your goals are, do you just want to chronicle your own life? Do you want to be internet famous and make advertising money? Do you just want to write stuff down to vent and laugh at in a few years? There are a lot of ways you could go and the answer to those questions will depend on what you plan on doing with this later.

agreed.

with a fledgling blog, you want to minimize any obstacles to posting as you can, even if they are small inconveniences. You save those until you are either established, or have to deal with spam bots etc

I think this has been covered more or less since your post, but my take is that he knows what he wants to write about, and is just focused on how to get as much attention to his writing as possible. Also, it seems he cares about what readers think (which is okay, but will be a problem if trolls come lol).
