OK, this has been going on long enough and it's been annoying the hell out of me. Every night at 12:01 AM on my computer clock, the internet disconnects for a few seconds before reconnecting.

As far as I can tell I haven't put any restriction on my router times and it SHOULDN'T be disconnecting like this.

The router model is Linksys WRT54G.

I'll add more information if needed.

Equinox, Although I do not have the problem, and never did, I do have WRT54G
I cannot express the pain that has crossed my mind when I read your thread of how its screwing you over
I feel your pain brother, I've done so much shit to fix and configure the router and its so hard doing it
Wish I could find the answer to your problem right now, but gotta catch my zZz's
Good luck though
Dea : one time when he was playing vs the comps he asked me "how do I make that flying unit that makes the other stuff invisible" and I reply "ur playing terran zomg"

So I guess you're pretty sure you're losing your connection to your router, and not your router (or modem) is losing connection anywhere else down the line?

Are you getting an LAN IP address assigned automatically through the router's DHCP function? By default these things usually give leases for 1 day, so this is my best guess. I'm not clear on the details of DHCP implementation, but I think your service could be disrupted when you renew the lease. You can try assigning a static IP to your computer if this is the case.

If not, try upgrading router firmware. It can't hurt. (usually...)

going to hafta go with the upgrading router firmware suggestion mentioned above.

Also, try to make sure that it's a problem with your router by having only your computer connected to the modem, and see if your computer stays connected through midnight. It could be a problem with windows xp/vista (unlikely, but it has happened before), or your modem.

I'm definitely sure it's the router because when I had a direct connection to the modem before on my desktop I never had a problem with disconnection.

I think the 1 day lease thing is correct, but how do I correct such a thing? How do I assign a static IP? And isn't assigning a static IP risky? I've heard somewhere that assigning a static IP is usually not recommended since its easier to hack or something o_o

If you're getting an IP address through DHCP you have to renew the lease--that's inherent to the system. You could try increasing the lease time (e.g. put in 9999 minutes for "Client Lease Time" on the first page of the WRT54G web interface), so if indeed this is causing your problem, it happens less often.

I'm no expert on Internet security, but I wouldn't think assigning a static IP would be a security liability. It's only a very small difference local to your home network, and it's common practice for many machines in company/university/enterprise networks. In any case it's definitely more safe than doing port forwarding, which is in turn much much less risky than setting a DMZ for your computer or just connecting your computer straight to the modem

If you want to set up a static IP for your computer the method's a little different depending on the OS. Just look it up online or ask me if you have Windows XP (what I have).

type 192.168.1.1 in ur web browser
log in with blank screen name and password : admin
go to set up tab
then ddns tab
disable ddns

that should solve ur problem
DDNS continually auto changes ur ip address which would cause the refresh of ur connection at that certain time everyday

I changed the lease time to 9999 minutes, now it's just time to wait. I use XP as well and if you could run me through that that would be great.

renegade_zerg: The DDNS is already disabled o_O

hmm.. whats weird is that my client lease time has always been on 0. (0 = 1 day lease) and I never had that problem.

Get a static IP and disable DHCP at all. It doesn't really introduce any security holes, the only point in DHCP is to enable plug&play - you don't have to configure anything on the client machine, you just plug the cable and enjoy internet. Besides, you need a static IP to forward ports anyway (however, it's a myth that port forwarding makes SC function better, you will just be able to host games). Your internal IP isn't dynamic with DHCP as well - as long as you turn the machine on more often that the client lease expires, you always get the same IP address, and even if you're away, the IP you get is the first from the router IP pool, which means it's always the same in a network with one client. No security changes, really, your router's external IP is a much more important thing.

If that doesn't work, check what task does windows have scheduled, it might be as well a software issue (unprobable, but possible) - antiviruses etc.

If you're still having troubles, it might be ISP-side, you can check that.

If you think you're crazy, connect to me via hamachi, enable RDP and PM me your admin account name//pass, I'll try to configure stuff myself =)
