Read my other blog:
http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=80865

I'm still in the same dilemma. I have three quizzes this week that I have yet to study for, a small project due Friday that I have mostly completed, a lab write-up for physics due Thursday, 12 photos due sometime this week for photography, ~5 hours of annotations left for Trial and Death of Socrates due Thursday, two UC prompt essays that I have to revise intensely by Thursday, a huge packet of lit-terms that I have to memorize for Monday's quiz, and some pages left to read for Outside Reading.

Today I skipped practice because I was too tired to go and I knew I had a lot of homework to do. I still have a lot of work and I will have to go to practice tomorrow.

I just found out that I have physics homework due tomorrow. See as how it's already 12 AM and it would probably take me a good hour or so to do (lol i suck @ physics) and I'm still busy annotating in my attempt to make the deadline, I considered copying the homework from a friend tomorrow during an earlier class. The only reason why I'm considering is because my teacher sometimes quizzes us on our homework, so it's important to have the work shown for the problems.

So... would it be moral for a student who is already crammed for other classes to cheat an assignment off of a friend?

Poll: Is it moral?
(Vote): Yes
(Vote): No
(Vote): Not so sure

I thought this up because I remember reading a packet about situations that tested your morality. A girl is in the same situation and cheats for a test (i think) because she doesn't have time to study. I decided that I was firmly against it, only to realize now that I'm a hypocrite. Didn't realize how much the tables would turn when you're the one in that situation.

NOTE: I wanted to make this blog to start an intellectual (hopefully) discussion on morality, not for pity/concern (although I have to admit it seems that way). Another interesting topic to talk about would be something I learned in psychology. People tend to blame an individual's situation based on the just-world phenomenon, like the individual's own faults and short-comings, rather than the individual's situation; and vice-versa for themselves. For example, for the packet we were reading in class I remember feeling that it was the girl's lack of time management and prioritizing that got her into her situation. Seeing as how I can't honestly say I've been 100% time efficient lately, I can see how I fit into this mind-set when I blame it on my teachers and my schedule. In the end it's my fault for choosing so many AP classes...

It's not moral, but it's necessary for your grade. At least you are considering the morality of it. In my opinion, it's immoral, but go for it anyway.

It's not about being a hypocrite or not...

Rather the moral implications of cheating :\

At my school, academics is extremely important to everyone even though they might not act that way. One day, in learning that we would have a homework quiz, ~15 people from periods 5 and 6 (which are after lunch) all sat down together during lunch copying other people's homework assignments. I even denied my friend copying my homework because I felt it would be wrong to do so. As far as I know these people didn't do their homework because they were lazy (even my friend).

Dude, suck it up and don't cheat! You have chosen to challenge yourself. Everyone who aims for a good university has to go through the exact same thing that you are.

First I will say, don't cheat on writing.

As far as the question itself, I'd say its a far deeper question that it seems on the surface. You will learn that the competition for grades affects who gets scholarships and who doesn't, which in turn has real life consequences for yourself and others. However, like you said, if other people are doing it then its a disadvantage for you.

I remember this one particular person in one of my physics classes. He had a conversation with my prof about this topic. This conversation took place with everyone in the class, and he was standing at the back of the class talking loudly to the prof in the front, as we were all turning in our homework:

student: You know I think some people are cheating out of the solutions manual.
prof: Well, those people won't do well on the test.
student: Yea, but its more than that. It affects scholarship money....these people are taking food out of my stomach.
prof: Well then tell me who they are and I'll talk to them.
student: That would be against my principles.

Interesting conversation. The fact was that most people were working together and using the solutions manual. He wouldn't do it, but he would ask his buddy who did have the solutions manual to explain problems to him sometimes.

Also a lot about becoming an adult seems to be about sacrificing your ideals. On the one hand, if you are idealistic, it will be easy for people to take advantage of you your whole life. In fact, you will always get less because everyone does it and you will have to just to stay 'even'. On the other hand, if you do decide to sacrifice your ideals, then you are in fact part of the problem with society in the first place.

So with this info you will have to make your own decisions.

btw, my philosophy is if its stupid don't do it. Put time into things that are worthwhile and where you feel you are learning something. Don't waste your time on stupid busy assignments.

If you learn something but can not put into use, they are useless garbage. It is really silly in which the standard western method of education attempt to teach everybody the same way, do the same homework same lecture for every student in class, while knowing full well, that each person learns in their own ways. Knowledge acquisition doesn't equal doing everything your professors tell you to do. True metacognition requires students to learn in their own pace.

I'm a teacher, and I don't care if my student cheat as long as they understand and can apply the knowledge they learned. Because they are not learning for my sake. And if they don't understand and can't apply them then I have failed them.

Obviously its not moral, why would you try to convince yourself otherwise? The problem you're having is trying to put this into "right" and "wrong" categories, when really you should just be evaluating everything as a whole within the circumstances you face. The world is not black and white. Does this violate who you are on a fundamental level or not?

That being said, I would copy and not give it a second thought (and I'm pretty sure I did just that in high school). If I really needed the practice I would strongly consider staying up and doing it for my own sake.

Technically, isn't morality based on the individual? What if I said that since my schedule is so packed, I think SHOULD be allowed to cheat for just one teeny-weeny assignment?

I think the passage I read in the packet was better in creating a discussion because it noted that the girl did a lot of good deeds for her community and stuff.

Just do it tonight and lose the sleep? Or half now half during lunch? You can even do it in other teachers classes... heh. There's always ways to get things done if you barely have any time.

As for the solutions manual -- I don't think that's cheating. I found I work best (especially with math or physics) if I have the solution and then can use backwards induction to figure out the answer. That was THE fastest way for me to learn math or physics by a fairly significant margin, so I would often look in the back of my book for the answers (unfortunately, only the odd ones :\).

Why should I waste my time doing it another way when I know that way works the best for me to learn the material? Then again, you could say for example why waste my time studying when cheating on the test works the best way. Similarly, I suppose you could make the argument that the points you're getting off the homework by getting the answer freely is cheating.

It's quite a bothersome thought now that I think about it...

I'd say it's a way of life.

Why not cheat in BW? you could get such an advantage this way, and come on, every one uses map hacks those days anyway.

Why not cheat on your GF? I mean, we are in fucking 2008' dude.

Why not cheat on taxes? Plz, wtf they need this for, it is me who earned it.

Go and get your zero honestly.

The solutions manual solves the problems step-by-step.
