On a serious note, the "tough love" method could either make them or break them so it is risky, I think. On the other hand.. who wants to be bland?

I've tutored for much longer than I want to so I'm telling you that from experience. Don't just deny or ignore complaints. The worst thing you can do at anything is to ignore feedback. If just one person is complaining, that's one thing. But if your boss has complaints with an s, you're probably doing it wrong.
