Yes, you did read this blog title correctly. I am starting a "starcraft school", held in my web 3 teachers back room with the computers we built the previous year out of his spare parts. I've spread the word around a couple close friends and some acquaintances about coming around after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I can teach them the real wonders of Starcraft.I managed to interest about 3-4 kids so far, but I really want more to be there.

I was thinking about introducing them to the Korean scene first, to show them the influence and power this game holds. Then show them some 1st person VODS to show them how the game should be played. Maybe an introductory test to gauge their knowledge... I really have no idea yet. The one thing I was sure of was putting out a date for a tournament and offering a small cash prize (maybe 40$-50$) to get more people interested. This would also allow me to see how good everyone is.

Anyway, I just wanted to put this out there and see if you guys would like to offer some ideas on how I should go about teaching them.

Do you have any formal or informal teaching credentials? If not, recognize this and plan accordingly.

There was a SC club in my school but I was like the best there and I was only D+ at the time -_-

So I ended up teaching people... First I always start with mechanics (b for build, v for advanced build, a-move, etc.). Then I teach them hotkeys (0 nexus, etc.). Then only after that I introduce them to strategies outside of basic mnm vs zerg / vult-tank vs toss and stuff. Then once they get some finer strategy down, I show them pro reps, so they can be exposed to greatness and the pinnacle of strategy. Then I 1v1 with them to make them better. I got a kid from 30 apm total noob to 120 D level player in 3 months; others progressed less because I didn't play/talk to them as much

EDIT: I MADE THESE RULES CLEAR TO THE PEOPLE I PLAYED WITH:
1. NO FASTEST, EVER.
2. NO BGH, EVER.
3. UMS - ONLY MICRO TOURNEYS AND ONLY AFTER WE PLAY REAL 1v1 - KIND OF LIKE TAKING A BREAK.

THE END.
Peace~

no point in showing FPVODs. Instead, just show the regular VODs

I've taught a couple of my friends to play, and the most important thing I've found is to take it slow so they don't get frustrated & stop having fun. I had them play a computer 1v1 on hunters until they could beat it every time, then play noob 1v1's on bnet. We also played a lot of 2v2 and 3v3 on hunters and bgh, and I think that helps a lot to understand the flow of the game from a high level (when to attack, where to engage and when to retreat, when to macro, when to expand...etc).

Depending on how new they are, watching pro reps and VODs really won't be as much of a benefit to them until they have a couple hundred games under their belt. I also think its important not to introduce particular BO's and tactics until they have a grasp of ALL the fundamental game mechanics (what units are good against what units, what is my overall gameplan vs Z/T/P). It really depends on how much they already know (don't know).

Don't forget to teach them SC manners.
Examples:
- If they're obs, they have to STFU(putting on AC) if the players tell them the talking is annoying
- No trash talking but banter is okay
- Saying gg

I'd recommend teaching them that cheese will not make them better.
- Hotkeys
- Watch the minimap
- Build orders
- micro ums
