Episodic gaming does kind of suck. But I suppose it lets Valve put a game out every few years instead once a decade.

He's saying that he's conflicted because he likes the idea of prioritizing gameplay above everything else (as explained by Pure Pwnage), but after playing Half-Life, his strongest feeling was about the plot (annoying cliffhangers) rather than the gameplay. Should he stay consistent with his support of the points made by Pure Pwnage and therefore admit to being a pussy, or should he hold his ground and defend his gut reaction of being dissatisfied with the plot of Half-Life?
I say... hold your ground. I think there's a point to be made about holding game developers responsible for the plot when their game has a big emphasis on plot. If they want their game to be all about gameplay, then they should make it so that the plot can be easily ignored without the player feeling like he's missing out. If a game developer puts excessive cut scenes, excessive dialogue, or a complex story in their game, then they should be held responsible for the integrity of the plot. So, having played a game that has an emphasis on plot, you are justified in caring about the plot.
But a pure gamer's response would probably be "there shouldn't have been a distracting plot" rather than "the plot should have been better".

I think the plot is an integral part of Half Life. The game is lacking if it's only considered for gameplay, imo. The gravity gun and physics only offer gimmicky puzzles and the shooting isn't much more than point and fire.
A good single player game has to immerse you. If you look at Doom 3, it immerses you by scarring the shit out of you. Painkiller immerses you by having you on your seat and leaning every time something is flying at you. Solid gameplay does immerse you as well; think of how many times you're on the edge of your seat while you're playing a close game of Starcraft. Half Life immerses you with an intriguing story and flowing sections that don't detach you from the game.
In the end a game has to be fun. They can be fun in any number of ways, and fun to different people. If the story immerses you enough to make it fun, then it's a good game. Judging a game based on the story-line doesn't make you a pussy if that game is about the story-line.
