I know I've been coming on here a lot about problems, and questions, but now I have a valid one.
Today my 2 brothers were outside shooting squirrels, and birds with BB guns. I know, when I found out I was angry, and I was going to tell my Mother.
However, I didn't since I'm not a snitch, and they know I've slept with my girlfriend at my house several times.
The problem got worse when a neighbor called the police department. They were outside, and she was pointing at a hole in her backyard window.
She accused my brother of shooting her window. The police are going to file a report, and whatnot I believe.
My brother said there's no way he did it
1. He says he was shooting the opposite direction, and at no point of time did she shoot at her windows direction.
2. The hole in the window is large, and does not look like it was shoot at. Rather it looks like a rock, or something was thrown at it.
This is what something looks like when a BB gun bullet goes through it. As far as I know from Google.
The woman wants the window replaced, and my Father doesn't know if my Brother actually did it. He say's no, but he's rather a jerk, and moron at times.
My question is how can I prove it wasn't my Brother.
Things I'm thinking 1. The hole is huge, and I remember someone telling me they could calculate how fast something went by the size of something it impacted.
Could I use a simple calculation using the measurements of the bullet plus the speed that it normally travels against what something would of traveled to have made the hole?
2. The hole is questionable, and maybe by looking at it. You can tell when the hole was made. My brothers have only shot outside today, and never any other day.
As far as I know owning a BB Gun isn't illegal in Illinois, but it's illegal to have it in public property. However, they were shooting in our backyard which constitutes for our private property.
In reality I don't really care. My Brother is an asshole for shooting helpless animals, and I'd like to see him get punishment.
However, this might be an old bitchy lady trying to make others pay for something that they have no responsibility paying for.
If anyone has any suggestions, statements, or even questions. That would be greatly appreciated.
I know this may be out of my league. and I HAVE NO LAW EXPERIENCE whatsoever. I still don't like being taken advantage of.
Anyone taking law might be able to help me? Any help is great.
EDIT: I was looking at this FAQ. http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/firearmsfaq.cfm I'm trying to figure out of the BB Gun justifies as a gun that would need a FOID card.
I don't think it would since my Father bought it a local sports authority, and I don't remember him having to show anything besides his ID.
Why am I even wasting my time. My Dad is a idiot for buying the gun, and my Brother is an idiot for using it in broad daylight to kill a Robin.
Fucking dumb asses.

Well it'd be more useful to post the actual hole because I was thinking the same thing as Kennigit until I read your post. But yea it should be pretty obvious if it's some huge hole that it wasn't from a BB gun. Also, if a BB gun even powerful enough to break glass from anything but maybe point-blank range?

O! Take a picture of it and we can tell if a bullet went through or not

I'll take a picture of it, and measure the inches.
edit: sweet I'm a Goliath.

Okay, I see two problems.
The one apparently more interesting to you right now is what to do about the window.
Fact: The window is broken, possibly by a BB gun. Fact: Your brother was outside, in the vicinity, with a BB gun.
What he said or she said, you don't trust, so let's throw out those statements. Unless you trust your brother, but then you wouldn't be still asking this question.
Conclusion? We don't have one. If it's a hole from a BB, that means the BB went through. Maybe she can produce a BB from inside the room with the broken window. Not irrefutable evidence, but it would certainly help her case. Was your brother using plastic or metal pellets? What color?
Also, I don't see what she can do about it if you want to take a picture. Is she going to stand in front of you with a big piece of paper and cover your camera lens? If the window is in a position that it could be shot at and broken by a BB gun, it's in line of sight from your property.
Also likely that she saw your brothers shooting animals if she saw them outside with BB guns. Does this affect anything?
The other problem I see: your brothers were shooting at animals. I don't really care what the law says, I think that's wrong. Apparently, you think that's wrong, too. Do something about it. "I'm not a snitch" means getting someone else to do something about it is out. Influence your brothers to stop. Using words preferably. Personally, I'd suggest using each other as target practice if they really want moving targets. They could even get a whole war game thing going. Make sure they wear protective gear if they go that way though.

I think they were copper, but I'm not sure. I'll be updating with information about the BB gun, picture of hole, and other details tomorrow. It's dark outside, and I'm rather tired.
Too be honest. I trust my Brother to a certain extent. However, he's not the type of person to lie, and weezel out of mistakes. Therefore I don't think he did it.
The woman who's window got shot has always caused problems. She's whinny, annoying, and bitchy. There's good cause she's trying to blame our family for this matter.
I'll ask her if she can provide a bb gun bullet from inside her house, if she does my case is shot, or she's smart. I could still compare the bullet, however, so I'm not to worried about it.
As for shooting the animals. I said I don't agree with it, and you sound like I can actually tell my 6"4 245 pound Brother with a huge ego what to do. Especially when I'm 5"8, and 160 pound person who doesn't like altercations, or violence.

What information would I need to figure that out. Thickness of the glass, mass of the bullet, and power of the gun?

Why do you need her permission? Hop the fence and take the pic? Unless you need to get inside her house to take it for some reason.

Um that kind of math science stuff probably isn't the best/easiest thing to use in the real world since there are a lot of variables and such but I would think there would be info out there as to the power and capability of what your BB gun model/type can do and from what distance.

She has a rottweiler, and I think it's out when she's not there.

I definitely think we want:
1) Information about the exact bb gun you have 2) Information about the exact ammo 3) Minimum reasonable range from your property to the broken window. Is there a clear line of sight from your yard to her window? If so, then you can photograph it from your yard most likely. If not, then I don't see how the bb coulda gotten there without ricocheting (which would reduce impact velocity). 4) Approximately what angle would the bb have hit the glass at? 5) See if you can find out information about the glass of the window.
Has the lady claimed she saw them hit the window, or is all her evidence circumstantial? If the latter, then I don't think there's much she can do about it.

Thank you, for giving me this viewpoint, and outlook. I appreciate everyone's help.
