Hopefully you aren't dumb like me and switched the browser to a proxy setting and forgot about it 2 days later and it just so happens the proxy doesn't work. I was going ape shit yelling "My computer got a virus! Screw the world!" and here all it was is I had to change my settings back to normal... Sorry I can't really help but good luck fixing it. | ||

If ping teamliquid.net doesn't work, but ping 67.228.171.232 does, then your DNS server doesn't work temporarily. In this case you can either: - change it manually (in the TCP/IP settings, where you also enter your IP address and things like that. Control Center -> Network or so -> TCP/IP v4 -> rightclick -> Properties and then you're basically there. If you don't know which one to use just use the two from opendns.com: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) - reconnect to receive a new DNS server address - or just wait until it works again This is very likely in a case like this, be sure to check this. The rest is unlikely but it's what I'd try first: 2.) Disable personal firewall if you use one (might be misconfiguration, a bug, or whatever). Personal firewalls are bad anyway. 3.) Check your c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file (it's a normal text file) if something strange is in there (some malware uses that to redirect hostnames to a different IP address, so you land somewhere else (and maybe this location doesn't exist anymore)). By default, there are only the 2 localhost/loopback entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost") in that file. Maybe just the 127.0.0.1 one if your system isn't IPv6 ready) 4.) Do a traceroute to a few common websites (that shows you the "route" of your connection), command: tracert teamliquid.net 5.) Scan for malware etc. Virus scanners are NOT bad (except for the performance overhead) and you should use one.  If you don't know how to enter these commands: Start -> Run -> "cmd" (in Vista type it in the search box) then type them there | ||

Here I used explorer instead of Firefox while the problem existed. I used IE option to "diagnose problems." Is this broken and if so how should I fix it? Edit: I guess all that stuff is from Spybot? At least I assume so. I'm not sure if this negatively affects anything, or if changing it would negatively affect Spybot. I'd guess you almost definitely have some malware running. Use some scanners to find out more about it. Unless it's a harmless case, you also should reinstall Windows. Note that some malware can be highly sophisticated, hide itself from scanners etc... if it has full rootkit functionality you won't be able to detect it at all from within the compromised system. You then have to scan your system from a different operating system (Linux Live CD, or scan over the network) in order to find these. It's very unlikely that this is the case but that kind of malware is one of the reasons why scanners shouldn't be trusted blindly. You can still try one more thing: renaming the Firefox profile folder temporarily (so that Firefox will revert to its standard settings, no extensions etc.), then restarting Firefox and trying it again. The profile folder is: c:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxxx.default in XP c:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxxx.default in Vista The "xxxxxxx" means random characters. If it works then, then either you or a malware program has messed with some settings of Firefox (and IE too). In any case, if you do have malware, try to find out what it is and how it installed itself so that you can prevent it the next time. | ||
