Out of curiosity, what are you PR's for the races that you run?

I came out of high school, gave up running and put on 80 lbs. I'm working on getting back into it now, but I'll probably try to just marathon if I can ever get there. In highschool I ran the 800 mainly. I ended up running sub 2 5 times, with a P.R. of 1:58.4 - I think I could have went a lot faster - I was due for a good race, it just never came. Off of my 800 training I ran 51.5 in a time trial for the quarter, so thats not too bad. The only time I ran the mile really was as a freshman - I ran 4:56 but never really ran it again. I think I ran 4:50.x in a relay once, but before I moved up to the chicago suburbs for my last 2 years of highschool, we didn't really take track that seriously so our coach didn't take splits.

Around the same time I also saw Hicham El Geurrouj set the world record in the mile and gold in Athens for the 1500m, and I was inspired. The man was a machine (and then later I find out the bad ass also won gold in 5000m just 'cause he could). I have his 1500m in Athens as my homepage to be awed every time I open Firefox (which is a lot). I plan to drop my 1500m time by 48 seconds to 4:00. I picked the time because it's a sexy number and also beats the record at the same meet my ass was handed to me in. I don't know if I can make the goal, but I do know that I can work for it. I'm posting this and telling as many people about this so that if I do give up you can all call me a lair and fuck face. I won't give up though Enough about me, while watching Hicham's record in the mile, I though the race was really strange. The pace setters didn't actually run the race, they were just there for Hicham. The rest of the runners seemed to be running the race seriously though. So, I ask, are world record things like this planed as world record attempts, or are they actual meets that just happen to have the world records? Video included. Hicham's record in the mile that my question refers to: Hicham's beautiful 1500m Gold in Athens (in case you've not seen it):

As for his beautiful 1500 in Athens, I think it is more so than you know. When El G was dominating the world and setting his WR, the olympics escaped him. He had never won the olympics up until his 2004 run. He did win the 5k just cause he is a badass, but he isn't the real badass at the 5k. Bekele is so much more of a badass at the 5k and 10k. Best of luck to you to in training. 4:00 for the 1500 is quite fast. One more edit - if you want some inspiration from a HS runner, watch Alan Webb's HS Record Mile.

Missing Sydney must have been quite a thing for him. I believe in the Athens video they mention he cried after getting silver. He also cries at the end of Athens. He looks like a very emotional runner. I'm very happy that he got both golds :D (although this is a little after the fact) I didn't mean to say that Hicham was the most bad ass in 5k, just that he's a total bad ass all around. I can't really say much about Bekele because I don't follow much running, so you'll have to tell me about him Also, with the pace setters, do they generally drop out after a few laps from the exertion?

The pace setters generally drop out because all they are paid to do is to set the pace, most of them would probably do okay in the race, but their sole purpose is just to take the race out at a certain time. Once they do that, they drop out, collect their money after the race, and all is good.

I don't really follow any sort of running except if it concerns Ryan Hall; he's such a badass :D Totally agree - Ryan Hall is my highest hope for the Olympics. If he could pull a gold that would be so amazing. Anyone who runs a 2:06 as their third ( i think ) marathon is a total stud.

I think if anything that video put down my hopes a bit, and made me realise just how fast 4:00 is. After watching the Olympians get under 3:40, 4:00 seemed completely reasonable. Fuck that though, I'll fight for it :D

I'm overweight, about 5"8 and 190-195 lbs, and i heard it's bad to run too much wehn you're overweight. The only way I see running too much being bad for you if you are overweight would fall under the same category of running too much even if you are in shape - if you're body can't handle it it just can't handle it. Most of the time if you are overweight it isn't that you shouldn't run that much its that you can't run that much. If you are mainly wanting to get better spurts for basketball, cross training would probably be the best. You can run a couple miles a day for stamina but do agility workouts to get your bursts up. ankles, doh. And ilovezil i would suggest you heading for sherdog and reading up on intervals, tabata system and the like.

You are severely over weight for your height, you should be doing long distance to increase your stamina and cut back on you food consumptions. I'm 5'7 and I used to weigh close to 170lbs, now I'm 145 buffed up. For sprinters, at 5'9, 5'10, 170lbs would be massive already.
