The topic of how long my parents intend to continue staying in this house came up today and they told me that when they retire in the next few years they were thinking of moving to a new home. We sort of live in a pretty expensive suburb and they figure they could sell this house and buy a much larger one in a cheaper area with lower taxes as well. From a financial standpoint, it makes perfect sense.
That said, anyone that knows me pretty well knows that I'm a really sentimental person. The thought of not having this house to come back to really depresses me. This house is home, I can't imagine it ever not being home. Even when I eventually move out it's comforting to know that when I go to visit my parents it will still be in the house I've lived in for as long as I can remember.
So that got me thinking, what could I do to get my parents to stay? Like, could I pay the difference or something. But after giving it more thought I find that to be awfully selfish of me. Asking my parents to stay in an older house when they could be in a newer, bigger, cheaper house, simply for the sake of my own nostalgia. The house isn't all that old, was built about 18 years ago actually, but I digress. So I'm in a bit of a bind. I feel awfully depressed thinking that one day I might not have access to this place that has been home forever but then feel guilty about trying to fight it.
Not sure I really have much of a question, just not sure what to think I suppose.

i've never really felt that way since i've lived in i think either 10 or 11 different places by now.
but i would assume that after a bit of time you just get accustomed to the new house and eventually learn to call it home.

As long as it has been in the same city, I have always loved moving, it's a new clean start, plus you find so much shit you think you lost years ago.
Edit: Then again, I have moved every 3-5 years.

So I'm guessing I'm a bit of an oddity in that I've lived in this house for a good 18-19 of my 23 years in existence? Literally as long as I can remember, I only have very foggy images of my old house as I was too young to really remember it.
I don't know how to really put things in perspective for people used to moving, but for me it's almost like losing a good friend or family member. I sort of develop attachments to objects or places in the same way most other people become attached to people. It's always been there. The only other thing in my life that I can think of that has been in my life longer are my parents.
I don't know, it just makes me feel awfully sad. And I don't feel sad often.

I love moving! It always gives a new start for something.
But on the other hand, my granma's home I wouldn't trade for anything =)

i moved recently. i thought i would miss my old house (lived there for 10 years, most of the latter half of my life), but i dont think about it at all now.

Well how old are you? Do you got a good job? Your attending college? I suggest you get a job if you attend college....Maybe you can talk your parents into selling you the house and if you are in college, you can rent out rooms to college class mates...You can save memories and still make good profit for yourself...If anything you will own the house and make great profit for yourself...That depends b/c I don't know your financial situations.....The housing market is a great place to make great profit atm.....Only if i had a tad bit more money I would do the same..But life is so hard....And I love to spend money....I'm poor Get on the Grind cat....You will not regret it..

you could rent your old house out, and get a mortgage on the new house. (you can consider using your old house as the security for the loan which will make the interest lower.) this should be ok financially, unless:
1)you are sure that the value of your old house/land will go down in the future. (like they are gonna be building a nuclear reactor next to it)
2)your old house is pretty run down and will not be able to fetch a reasonable rental.

Yeha my old house which I lived about 7 years got tore down and now it's an open garage now.

my mom's landlord keeps selling the house she's in and moves her to a different one, its getting really fucking annoying

Put hidden scary messages all over the house. Come at night and make it seem like its haunted. Scare the people who buy it so badly that they sell it for a cheaper price so they can get rid of it as soon as possible. Once that happens, then just buy it back for the cheaper price and tada, you will have your house back. Make sure the stuff you leave hidden is really creepy, like all kinds of hints and junk. Read some Nancy Drew books to get more ideas. Good Luck.

I feel more or less the same way in my house... have lived in it for 20 years as one or two other people mentioned. W/E life goes on.
